Nice, useful video! I've found hockey tape to be a good replacement, especially for Ahead sticks. My problem hasn't ever been the grip, but rather the shock to the hands and wrists from the aluminium. I don't usually need tape on regular wooden sticks.
I'm not sure about that tape. This tape is sticky for better gripping, if athletic tape is sticky on the outside then yes that would work. The design of the tape and the way it is cut makes it unique for this application. Most drum tapes are not tapered and cut like this.

Not the same thing. That breaks down and is also glossy. This tape is tacky so it helps your grip.
