they're not stupid. They say stupid things like that to appeal to their voters: ignorant religious fanatics, which the US has a LOT of. If u want the STUPID people to vote for u, then u have to say stupid things. This explains the republican primaries.
No, these people are smart, shrewd, calculating, shameless liars who will say ANYTHING to appeal to this WONDERFUL mass base they've found for themselves.
@shwwnn You seem to be answering yourself. Also you make the mistake of posting your second comment on Part 2 assuming people always watch the second part of a video. If you check you will see as of writing 21,824 watched P 1, though only 12,618 P2. I don't know why people are always attacking Paxman. Here he is up against probably the greatest intellectual of the day. If you want to see a really stupid interview with him. Search YT for Chomsky Israeli Channel10 interview, Silly cow!
@ludvan67 my 2nd comment is about something said in the 2nd video ("Noah's Ark" remark). So I posted it on the 2nd video because only those who watch the 2nd one will understand what I was referring to.
I don't know about others who "attack Paxman", but my criticism is Paxman's repeatedly asking the same question many times in the 1st video (at 3:40, 10:10, 10:28, 11:15).
I watched the one u suggested, at least she doesn't repeat the same question 4 times.
@shwwnn Understood. True she does not repeat the question, but she makes a right fool of herself. There is another Paxman interview where he repeats a question to Michael Howard who was then leader of the Conservative party in the UK at least 8 or 10 times because Howard refuses to answer it. Its become a very famous. I'll have to watch the recording again with Chomsky, and come back to you on it.
@ludvan67 Paxman has admitted on one of those "100 most cringeworth moments on tv programs" that the only reason he kept asking the same question over and over with Howard was he'd been given a message in his ear piece that there was technical problem with the next article on newsnight. He had to ad-lib. Was very funny though.
@pablohanc I have doubts about that. Paxman could have gone on to another subject he is very well informed. Perhaps on reflection he felt a bit embarrassed or a bit silly for repeating the same question so many times. He is human. We all do silly things, that on refection we would like to have the tape wiped so to speak.
@ludvan67 I have no idea at all whether Paxman was telling the truth when he said he was getting a meesage in his ear telling him he couldn't go onto the next article. But it was Paxman saying that was the case on the TV program. Maybe Paxmans lieing, although I doubt it. Why lie about an incident in which the MP looked like the fool, not the interviewer.
@pablohanc Because as I said on reflection, and after viewing the tape, he probably felt abit silly. Don't get me wrong, I like Paxman, and totally dislike Howard. A conservative, and a Romanian. Could one be anything worse? Paxman recently said to a Greek; "Why are the Greeks so dishonest" youtube[dot]com/watch?v=7BJ8-mtJWJI That I'm sure he regrets afterwards. Not nice.
@ludvan67 Don't agree. He needn't have felt silly. I think the general concensus is that Howard looked more foolish for not answering the question.
In general though, Paxman is a pretty amateur interviewer. The Chomsky interview highlights that. The greek statement you refer to is another example of his amateur status, a headline grabbing shock question rather than a well thought out series of questions. And what was he playing at on the 2005 election broadcasts? Was he drunk???
@ludvan67 What would you call a journalist who when interviewing Tony Blair allowed TB to get away with saying Saddam Hussein threw the weapons inspectors out in 1998, when in fact the UN withdrew them as them US had announced it was going to commence bombing, despite the inspectors saying that the IRAQ authorities were complying with the inspections. I don't judge Paxman on the size of his pay packet, but the accuracy and quality of his questioning / crossexaminations. He fails regularly.
@ludvan67 A journalist that fails to pull up inaccuracies in his interviewee replies is an amateur in my book, no matter how big is pay packet is. And as a license fee payer it pains me to say I'm paying him not to do his job properly. Thats why I call him an amateur. Also, ref 2005 election, when he was still lucid, he asked george galloway "Are you proud of having got rid of one of the very few black women in parliament?" eh, what a dumb question. Andrew Marr's another amateur.
@shwwnn Having watched the interview at the noting the points you mention I see nothing wrong. Perhaps it's the British style of interviewing that is much more aggressive than in the US (FOX news apart that is just moronic & rude). Paxman asks the questions several times until he gets the answer he wants like a prosecutor in court. In fact he was very mild with Chomsky, probably because of the respect he has for him, and his age.
Thanks for posting. Indignation, outrage, being active and engaged are inevitable AND of course, essential. Unfortunately for all of us stupid people ARE in charge and initiating propaganda offensives as we breathe. Chomsky's clear and simply stated truths, his lucid analysis ought to awaken us just a little more to the absolute terror of the situation.
Why is Chomsky blinking so much? Could it be that he's filled with dread at the prospect of having Jeremy Paxman ask him the same question ten times? :-)
A more challenging position would've been to presume that the people Chomsky referred to are NOT stupid and that many viewers share the same view. There are many highly intelligent people who believe all sorts of bizarre nonsenses for whatever psychologically twisted reasons, but that doesn't make them "stupid". In America, that's certainly the case.
Incidentally, I wasn't being facetious. Oh, and I'd kill for some decent punctuation in your posts. (Now THAT'S facetiousness…)

"Why do you care about stupid people?" asks Paxman, as if he doesn't know (or care) that said idiots have power they often use to oppress, indoctrinate and abuse others.*
With one question, Paxman's illustrated everything that's wrong about his attitude as a journalist.
(*At least, I hope he realises that. If he doesn't, he's…well…stupid.)
@JoeStunner Actually rockets are very simple devices. Just the combination of two combustible fuels, mixed together, and ignited. Most people have the compounds either in their garage, and even in their kitchen. Hopefully you'll try it, and blow your self to bits.
Oops! Obviously touched a nerve there. (Hope it's not too cold in mum's basement.) Seriously, Bertrand Russell…use your behemoth intellect to enlighten me.
@JoeStunner The reason Paxman asked what is an apparently stupid question is that he was playing 'Devil's Advocate'. He's not there to be opiniated, he's there to elicit response from Chomsky. I also think the tone he used to ask 'Why?' when Chomsky said Obama was 'in many ways worse than Bush' was on the surface pretty lame. But again, it's to elicit a response from Chomsky. (I think Paxman did a fine job.)
PS: I think ludvan67's responses to you were arrogant, facetious and unhelpful.
@RJ6506 Yeh I like the man. I watched the 1974 Larry king interview. The problem with his ideas is of course BIG BUSINESS. I particularly liked his analogy about competition. I believe in ownership of everything by the people, and the elimination of the so-called "Free Market". So am I a "Liberal" in the American sense of the word? In American terms is Hillary Clinton a Liberal. Because to me she is a conservative. As for buying BP oil why not. If you bought it from Shell it would still be the same oil. The oil companies are all in league with each other.
@ludvan67 The harmonization of BP was because it was a British company. Obama calling it British Petroleum proved that had not been it's name for over 20 years. Americans say they believe in the free market, but only when it suits them. If Gadafi did not have oil the US & the rest of the west could not give a dam about Libya.
