  • Long Live Noam Chomsky

  • they're not stupid. They say stupid things like that to appeal to their voters: ignorant religious fanatics, which the US has a LOT of. If u want the STUPID people to vote for u, then u have to say stupid things. This explains the republican primaries.

No, these people are smart, shrewd, calculating, shameless liars who will say ANYTHING to appeal to this WONDERFUL mass base they've found for themselves.

  • @shwwnn You seem to be answering yourself. Also you make the mistake of posting your second comment on Part 2 assuming people always watch the second part of a video. If you check you will see as of writing 21,824 watched P 1, though only 12,618 P2. I don't know why people are always attacking Paxman. Here he is up against probably the greatest intellectual of the day. If you want to see a really stupid interview with him. Search YT for Chomsky Israeli Channel10 interview, Silly cow!

  • @ludvan67 my 2nd comment is about something said in the 2nd video ("Noah's Ark" remark). So I posted it on the 2nd video because only those who watch the 2nd one will understand what I was referring to.

I don't know about others who "attack Paxman", but my criticism is Paxman's repeatedly asking the same question many times in the 1st video (at 3:40, 10:10, 10:28, 11:15).

I watched the one u suggested, at least she doesn't repeat the same question 4 times.

  • @shwwnn Understood. True she does not repeat the question, but she makes a right fool of herself. There is another Paxman interview where he repeats a question to Michael Howard who was then leader of the Conservative party in the UK at least 8 or 10 times because Howard refuses to answer it. Its become a very famous. I'll have to watch the recording again with Chomsky, and come back to you on it.

  • @ludvan67 Paxman has admitted on one of those "100 most cringeworth moments on tv programs" that the only reason he kept asking the same question over and over with Howard was he'd been given a message in his ear piece that there was technical problem with the next article on newsnight. He had to ad-lib. Was very funny though.

  • @pablohanc I have doubts about that. Paxman could have gone on to another subject he is very well informed. Perhaps on reflection he felt a bit embarrassed or a bit silly for repeating the same question so many times. He is human. We all do silly things, that on refection we would like to have the tape wiped so to speak.

  • @ludvan67 I have no idea at all whether Paxman was telling the truth when he said he was getting a meesage in his ear telling him he couldn't go onto the next article. But it was Paxman saying that was the case on the TV program. Maybe Paxmans lieing, although I doubt it. Why lie about an incident in which the MP looked like the fool, not the interviewer.

  • @pablohanc Because as I said on reflection, and after viewing the tape, he probably felt abit silly. Don't get me wrong, I like Paxman, and totally dislike Howard. A conservative, and a Romanian. Could one be anything worse? Paxman recently said to a Greek; "Why are the Greeks so dishonest" youtube[dot]com/watch?v=7BJ8-mtJWJI That I'm sure he regrets afterwards. Not nice.

  • @ludvan67 Don't agree. He needn't have felt silly. I think the general concensus is that Howard looked more foolish for not answering the question.

In general though, Paxman is a pretty amateur interviewer. The Chomsky interview highlights that. The greek statement you refer to is another example of his amateur status, a headline grabbing shock question rather than a well thought out series of questions. And what was he playing at on the 2005 election broadcasts? Was he drunk???

  • @pablohanc Well at 750,000 a year he does pretty well for an amateur. Did not see the 2005 election broadcasts. I'll do a search for it.

  • @ludvan67 What would you call a journalist who when interviewing Tony Blair allowed TB to get away with saying Saddam Hussein threw the weapons inspectors out in 1998, when in fact the UN withdrew them as them US had announced it was going to commence bombing, despite the inspectors saying that the IRAQ authorities were complying with the inspections. I don't judge Paxman on the size of his pay packet, but the accuracy and quality of his questioning / crossexaminations. He fails regularly.

  • @ludvan67 A journalist that fails to pull up inaccuracies in his interviewee replies is an amateur in my book, no matter how big is pay packet is. And as a license fee payer it pains me to say I'm paying him not to do his job properly. Thats why I call him an amateur. Also, ref 2005 election, when he was still lucid, he asked george galloway "Are you proud of having got rid of one of the very few black women in parliament?" eh, what a dumb question. Andrew Marr's another amateur.

  • @shwwnn Having watched the interview at the noting the points you mention I see nothing wrong. Perhaps it's the British style of interviewing that is much more aggressive than in the US (FOX news apart that is just moronic & rude). Paxman asks the questions several times until he gets the answer he wants like a prosecutor in court. In fact he was very mild with Chomsky, probably because of the respect he has for him, and his age.

  • I hope he can live and carry on for a long long time! Chomsky, you sir, are a legend

  • Thanks for posting. Indignation, outrage, being active and engaged are inevitable AND of course, essential. Unfortunately for all of us stupid people ARE in charge and initiating propaganda offensives as we breathe. Chomsky's clear and simply stated truths, his lucid analysis ought to awaken us just a little more to the absolute terror of the situation.

  • Why is Chomsky blinking so much? Could it be that he's filled with dread at the prospect of having Jeremy Paxman ask him the same question ten times? :-)

  • Why couldn't Chomsky be president? Oh yeah! His goal is to actually help the people. What a messed up world we live in. -_____-

  • @ImAznnn Because as a social-libertarian, he doesn't believe in hierarchical state control.

  • @hexcane I have repaired my shower, and built a rocket or firework that the Chinese invented thousand of years ago.

  • @ludvan67

A more challenging position would've been to presume that the people Chomsky referred to are NOT stupid and that many viewers share the same view. There are many highly intelligent people who believe all sorts of bizarre nonsenses for whatever psychologically twisted reasons, but that doesn't make them "stupid". In America, that's certainly the case.

Incidentally, I wasn't being facetious. Oh, and I'd kill for some decent punctuation in your posts. (Now THAT'S facetiousness…)

  • "Why do you care about stupid people?" asks Paxman, as if he doesn't know (or care) that said idiots have power they often use to oppress, indoctrinate and abuse others.*

With one question, Paxman's illustrated everything that's wrong about his attitude as a journalist.

(*At least, I hope he realises that. If he doesn't, he's…well…stupid.)

  • @JoeStunner I think it's you who are stupid, for not realizing why Paxman asked the question.

  • @ludvan67

    Oh, do tell, rocket-scientist.

  • @JoeStunner Actually rockets are very simple devices. Just the combination of two combustible fuels, mixed together, and ignited. Most people have the compounds either in their garage, and even in their kitchen. Hopefully you'll try it, and blow your self to bits.

  • @ludvan67

Oops! Obviously touched a nerve there. (Hope it's not too cold in mum's basement.) Seriously, Bertrand Russell…use your behemoth intellect to enlighten me.

  • @JoeStunner The reason Paxman asked what is an apparently stupid question is that he was playing 'Devil's Advocate'. He's not there to be opiniated, he's there to elicit response from Chomsky. I also think the tone he used to ask 'Why?' when Chomsky said Obama was 'in many ways worse than Bush' was on the surface pretty lame. But again, it's to elicit a response from Chomsky. (I think Paxman did a fine job.)

PS: I think ludvan67's responses to you were arrogant, facetious and unhelpful.

  • If you want to see another great old guy, just type in Jacque Fresco. Absolute fucking genius, still alive and kicking at 94.

  • @RJ6506 Yeh I like the man. I watched the 1974 Larry king interview. The problem with his ideas is of course BIG BUSINESS. I particularly liked his analogy about competition. Using the different organs in the body as an example. We would really be in trouble if all the organs were in competition with one an other.

  • You people can't be serious. This crackpot proves the proverb 'only the good die young'.

  • @jmcg1213 Yeh a real crackpot. A professor at one of the most prestigious universities on the planet. been called the greatest thinker of our time. And who are you. judging from your profile, that is empty like your mind.

  • @ludvan67 Ignore the troll.

  • @ZoamChomsky I presume even though you bare his name you are not related to Professor Chomsky. If by troll, you are refering the Noam Chomsky. You are nuts.

  • @ludvan67 I'm referring to jmcg1213, who's only calling the great philosopher and activist Noam Chomsky a "crackpot" to get a reaction out of knowledgeable others, hence a stupid "troll." Thanks for the good posts!

  • @ZoamChomsky Oh I apologies. Something that may seem rare in this forum, but I'm from a different era, not as old as the Prof' though. I like the movie on your profile. Michael Renie. I have 2 films of his The shape of things to come, & another one who's title I've forgotten, but he comes out of a flying saucer, and there is a robot. I could look it up in my movies list, but it's rather late here, and past my bedtime.

  • I live in a small town which is mainly liberal, and it was interesting that right after the oil spill the people went right back tO buying gas at BP, as though nothing had happened.

  • @beradification I'm from the UK. The word "Liberal" as used in America confusing. I'm a socialist. IE. I believe in ownership of everything by the people, and the elimination of the so-called "Free Market". So am I a "Liberal" in the American sense of the word? In American terms is Hillary Clinton a Liberal. Because to me she is a conservative. As for buying BP oil why not. If you bought it from Shell it would still be the same oil. The oil companies are all in league with each other.

  • @ludvan67 The harmonization of BP was because it was a British company. Obama calling it British Petroleum proved that had not been it's name for over 20 years. Americans say they believe in the free market, but only when it suits them. If Gadafi did not have oil the US & the rest of the west could not give a dam about Libya. Anyway Chomsky is against boycots they defeat there own end, if that was what you were implying should have been done to BP!

  • Respond to this video...Sorry harmonization should read demonetization.

  • @ludvan67

No, you are not a "liberal."

american-style liberalism is not the same as classical liberalism, nor is the american meaning of leftist anywhere close to the traditional academic meaning. hillary is a proponent of neo-liberal style economics and a war hawk. my own understanding is that the new left is largely anti-authoritarian, pro people, and anti capitalist. the american MSM allows no such ideology to be explored because it is too antithetical to the mythology of america.

  • @kidzed84 Well I'm glad I'm not a "liberal.". What is MSM? Even though I don't know what MSM means (Microsoft management a joke, but with some truth to it). I get the jist of what you are saying, and agree. I would not call Clinton a war hawk, she is just a conservative in the English understanding of the word. A dirty capitalist, yes that's the right word.

  • @ludvan67

    MSM= mainstream media.

Although there are balanced sources like Al Jazz, I prefer DemocracyNow.

Yes, Hillary is a proponent of american economic imperialism and globalised capitalism.

It seems to me that both of those things require a large amount of complicity and passivity of the public and violence of the miltary.

  • anyone who doesnt like this is a fascist pig, have a splendid day =]

  • lol paxman stumbles over the idea that internet is helping true feelings come forward, and hwat he doesnt bring up, is that the pentagon has a defense requisite, naming the internet as an enemy, keep freedom of the internet.

  • I search the net every week for his latest insights, given his age, I've got Chomsky down for 100+ before I stop hearing his wisdoms. If God truly loves the world, he's with me.

  • is amazing how lucid this man is

  • God Said to Abraham NAME YOUR KIDS NOAM!!!!!

  • @tubesbestmusic What all of them. That would be confusing unless they were Noam 1,Noam 2, etc. And what if they were all girls. Confusing and ambiguous book the Torah.

  • "well why do you care about stupid people" "because stupid people got power"...hahahaha ah Chomsky i would of said "because stupid people ask stupid questions like this" but you wouldnt do that because you are Chomsky, nice interview!

  • @Hmed08 You should not misquote a professor of linguistics with bad English even without checking "because stupid people got power" is wrong. He actually said "because these people HAVE power".

  • @ludvan67 hahaha i was just commenting on the stupid question the interviewer was asking and how modest Noam is. But you are right, i need to work on my English as well as you because its not "bad" English but rather "poor" lool ps i totally agree with Chomsky and ty for the interview, kudos!

  • @Hmed08 Poor, bad who cares. It was just that you misquoted the Prof. Anyway I'm glad you like a lot of other people liked the interview.

  • @Hmed08 why is a stupid question? People who belive things like that are stupid. Paxman was simply showcasing chomsky!

  • Paxman is an idiot, constantly trying to infer that Chomsky might be opposed to the internet, but Chomsky, as always, manages to get through the idiocy and provide enough information to inspire weeks of research and action among hundreds of people.

  • @colibri1 ya, dunno why Paxman kept asking that one... but that aside I thought he asked him really good questions, and at the end you could hear him say "that's great, thanks", as he wrapped it up...

Paxman's one of the better interviewers regularly occupying the screen.

  • @colibri1 I think his thrust was an opposition to Democracy on Chomsky's part, linking it with both the Internet and Washington power. Quite good timing actually. Chomsky dodged and sped on as usual though. Have you seen much of Paxman?

  • "Global warming can't be a problem because God promised Noah that there won't be another global flood"! I don't know whether one exists or not, but if there is a God I hope it protects me from religious fundamentalist idiots.

  • Noam Chomsky you are an amazing human being and have completely inspired me through your wisdom and conscience.

  • thx for uploading quickly (i got a tip from another commenter, nice). I think paxman geniunely listened, learned and appreciated the interview; but i guess it will be business as usual for him tomorrow.

  • I'm really impressed how many people are aware of Chomsky. especially the young. The guy's 82. we've got to savour every breath.

  • @diamondogz

All thanks to the internet :)

  • He's in London, does that mean he will be doing a talk somewhere??? would love see one of his lectures in person.

  • @futurahi

Me too, im trying to find out, will post on here if I find anything useful.

  • cool, keep us posted

  • "stupid people are everywhere and they have lots of power" – genius!

  • What a world. Put Chomsky on main stream media for a month and we'd live in a much better world. But the fascists put Obama and such fucktards and look at what we have...

  • one of the most thought provoking intellectuals of our time.

  • got a link to part 1?

  • @gnosticheresy It's coming up soon.

  • @gnosticheresy It's up @ youtube.com/watch?v=_oMslFIYaVk
