@Cyb0rC4t Yes, you are right. There is a great opportunity to combine sails to control global warming with a space-based solar power station. I never know quite how far to go in each video! :-)
100 000 square kilometers is circle 360 km in diameter. Building such circle is really easy task for todays technology, considering fact, that USA just lost the technology to send larger payloads to space altogether ;-))
@PetrFM Yes, there is an irony in my posting up this video in the same week that the space shuttle landed for a final time. Even with lots of nanotech developments to make nice thin and light materials, this kind of thing will require **some kind** of space transportation facility! :-)
I dissagree with "without the need for people to radically change their lifestyle". And the comparison with the Moon landing is short sighted as well. The Moon landing wasn't a long-term ambition, it was just a short term "let's get there before the other guys" space race. Radically changing how society works is what got us out of slavery and improved basic human rights. This solar sail is just the "lazy man's option" and it's denying the world the possibility to really improve itself.
@AlexandruUrsachi Thanks for watching and engaging. I would like to hope that you are right and that we will alter our lifestyles rather than opting for solutions like this. If only to save resources, radical changes in how we live are needed. But sadly there is little evidence that politicians are taking much notice. Current action on climate change directed at living differently is vastly inadequate. Hence we need to at least consider alternative solutions -- if only to prompt other action.
@AlexandruUrsachi Thanks. I'm already working on a video all about solar energy -- from thermal to PV to concentrated solar power (CSP) to space-based! :-)
has anyone thought about putting solar cells on the sails and using them to also power a space colony?

the only we could build this in our era is by weaponizing it or when we stop killing each other.

cool video...this could be used to cool down Venus and terraform it.
hayden50 7 months ago
@hayden50 And also to alter the weather here on Earth by controlling which parts of the planet warm relative to others.

I first heard about this idea regarding a hypothetical Terra-formation scenario of Venus.

@ExplainingTheFuture
Search "Space Based Solar Power" on YouTube, it is a possible solution, and countries like Japan are already studiying this technology.

Interesting concept. But it wouldn't prevent ocean acidification. You'd need another solution for that.

@wjfox2006 Yes, you are correct. No single solution will ever completely work.
