the last "pre-disco" bits of funk by mfsb can be heard on the famous "freddie's dead" album. it was so little time after this very 45! music evolved so fast then. i admit i have a huge preference for the earlier stuff.
When people think about the sound of Philadelphia, they think of the soul and disco music that came from Gamble & Huff through artists like Billy Paul, The O'Jays, Harold Melvin, etc... But these guys could funk it up with the best of them. Baker Harris and Young, the nucleus on MFSB, and the guys on this track, were also the players on Wilson Pickett's Engine #9. Bobby Eli is playing the lead wah guitar, his specialty.
