actually, dude, this song is serious.  it's not making a mockery at all. i was born in hamlet, and today my heart goes out to you and everyone else who lost a family member in that god awful disaster! i hope nobody EVER forgets what happens when you let greed get in the way of human decency. emmett roe and his son and the plant manager should have been hung for such recklessness. instead they got a slap on the wrist! god bless hamlet nc!!

I'm sorry that you lost your mother, but you really shouldn't find offense in this song - it's carrying on a rich tradition of American folk music. Before radio and television, the news of the day was carried by newspapers. Those who couldn't read got their news from itinerant musicians. I'm sure that "The Lawson Family Tragedy" might have been offensive in its time (1929), but now most people don't even know it's based on a true story.
