  • They are great, but the would of been more famous if the production was radio material, and if they released there album in the 70's or 80's. They were a little late for the type of music.

  • Albums like this one should have been top of the charts but as we all sadly know we americans have been too busy making rappers, boy bands and the various britney spears' rich. Kevin's music had rich textures, intelligent melodies and harmonies etc all things that are considered boring by the vast majority of music buying sheep

  • Since I've heard this song from a CD my dad gave me for Christmas, I cannot get it out of my head. Been singing it all day at work today. Such a catchy song. RIP Kevin, this is one of the best songs I've ever heard.

  • @TheAwesomeDerek I got this cassette tape for Christmas 1991. I played it to the point of ruin. I too, still can't get it out of my head.

    great stuff.

  • Kevin left us too early. Man, is this up to date anytime or what? We're sinking and most of us are rocking the boat. Thank him for giving us what he could. Genius, yes. I have memories connected to this song thtat are so strong I will never let it go. That is what K meant to me. Let us keep him a hero!

  • Toy Matinee should have the band of the 90's Kevin Gilbert was so freakin' awesome and talented man we really miss you man Sheryl Crow is a hack lame-o dont even mention her name in the same sentence with KG( she is a has been or really a never was to me)

  • This is classic 80's music, too bad the entire music scene was turning with the likes of Guns-n-roses, Poison ect, ect. when this came out. What he could really do is write a song! In the pop-rock genre the man had few peers.

  • There's more musicality in the little sections with the bouzouki fills than in most of what comes out of the labels these days. Who gets a bouzouki into pop music these days???

  • This song reminds me of when I lived in Las Vegas.

  • I met him several times, when he recording the Giraffe album(s). He was so amazingly talented. His death very tragic.

    RIP Kevin

  • Kevin was a brilliant musician, composer, etc. Unfortunately, as pretty as he was, he could not parlay his presence into what might be considered even a halfway decent video. All of the Toy Matinee videos were terrible, which would not be a big deal had the band broke 7-8 years earlier when terrible videos were the norm for new bands that were poorly supported by their labels.

Anyway, Kevin was throw back in that he really only cared about the music. RIP Mr Gilbert...

  • My daughter's boyfriend is the one who introduced me to Kevin's music, so much better than a lot of the crap that is considered music these days

  • I met Kevin at the 1989 NAMM show. He was doing a demo for Yamaha. Nice cat and really good keyboard player. I had no idea at the time he was such a brilliant writer and singer. I saw him a couple of years later at the Coach House when my GF took me to see this band called Toy Matinee. I about fell out of my chair when I saw it was him. Years later I heard what he had done with Sheryl Crowe and no idea that was Sheryl in his band years earlier. Such a tragedy that he passed. He was amazing!

  • Did you know he was literally one week away from being announced as the new singer for Genesis, replacing Phil Collins?

  • We do not discuss Sheryl Crow and Kevin in the same sentence. Unwritten rules...

  • @mitchqmitch hahahaha, so true!

  • We do not discuss Sheryl Crow and Kevin in the same sentence. Unwritten rules...

  • awesome musician...i was a friend of a friend in pasadena...my friend supplied a lot of tech backup to kevin...he is still rockin'

  • Had this CD since it came out in 1990 and I had no idea there was a video. A real loss, Mr. KG's passing. I have many, many CD projects that Kevin worked on for other people and he also supported a lot of other artists by producing and remixing old progressive releases "for about the cost of a cup of coffee". I still enjoy "Thud" and "Shaming" and wonder what he'd be doing today if he'd lived.

  • Finally, on this day when the prediction of the "second coming" is making the news, this tune takes on a whole new life! Finally, my 20-something era makes sense! LOL

  • Kevin Gilbert's is within the top 10 greatest songwriters of all time in my opinion, and others I know as well share the same feeling toward his music. A great present to another would be an album from Kevin or Toy Matinee, share his music with others, they might just really appreciate it, as I do.

  • My dad could tell you every band members name!! I promise you all that. When he wakes up i will have him tell you all!!!!

  • I grew up listening to this band. I am 26 now my mom and dad used to play it when i was in 3rd grade on my way home from school. In california is where i grew up. I live in Texas now. But I love this band, my favorite song is "The Ballad of Jenny Ledge" I hope that is how you spell it!! I love this band. I just wish Kevin Gilbert was still alive. He loved Sheryl Crow!! Broken hearts are hard to mend!!

  • Drove from Pittsburgh to Baltimore and back in one 24 hour period back in 1991 just to spend a few hours in a hotel room with an old girlfriend, and I listened to this cassette all the way down and back. And Nancy, if you're listening... it was worth it!

  • This is a great track on all levels but what nails it down is that groove. Toss Panos is a very underrated and unknown drummer. When I first heard this tune, that was the thing that just hit me between the eyes!

  • @Paradiddle9 on the recording it's not Panos on drums. I'm sure it's Brian McLeod.

  • @Kidagn Yup. TP was live support only.

  • I love this band!! I brought this cassette tape for show and tell in Fourth grade, when i was 9 ish i think. Every one thought i was stupid because i didn't listen to the typical stuff like Vanilla Ice and MC Hammer. That's crap music and my mom and dad raised me well as far as music goes.

  • I miss this band! I listen to Incubus sometimes and think they were influenced by Toy Matinee. Too much talent to have lost him, what a loss.

  • Last seat is yours Kevin. Thank you for your inspiration and talent. You truly were a gift to the world.

  • I used to love this song. I just found out about this artist two years ago. And just now realized was his. What a great music songwriter he was.

But let's do us all a favor, and stop mentioning that other female "artist" in every single video of his. I feel it doesn't contribute in any way to honor his memory.

    RIP Kev, we miss you.

  • One of my all-time favorite songs. Just as good now as it was 20 years ago.

  • I have this on my iPod :) and still listen to it :)

1 viewer did not make it for "the last plane out".

  • Even to this day, this is one of the best recorded and produced albums I know of. it is truly an audiophile quality...

  • Shame, what a stupid way for someone that talented to go out.

  • Driving through rural Pennsylvania and this came on a college station. I am 62 and this is a fabulous song....especially now!

  • Been a fan of Kevins since first hearing this album. By any chance is there a version of "The Toy Matinee" to be had anywhere? Excellent song and so appropriate these days!

  • @MrTripDawg Yes at amazon.com

  • A personal fave of mine. Great attitude for the end of the world, lol.

  • Hey TrickAssassins- I liked your post. I agree I could clearly hear his talent in every project he did ! All of the great talent he worked with Kevin made them better! He really was pretty much one of a kind

  • Band Members : Kevin Gilbert - lead vocals, guitars, keyboards

Patrick Leonard - keyboards, backing vocals

    Brian Macleod - drums, percussion

    Guy Pratt - bass

    Tim Pierce - guitar

  • The genius that, unfortunately, the world has not heard! =(

  • Just re-discovered this. What a gem.

  • They are going to keep your mind working day and night, musically and lyrically. That is not bad for one album. I hope Toy Matinee will keeep selling and selling...

  • This is perfection, musically and lyrically. I heard Toy Matinee on the radio in the early 1990:s, and they set a standard (based upon the vulominous tradition of TOTO, RUSH, YES... and so on) which is impossible to catch up with.Never the less, I love them with the same passion today. What happened to the music industry... why is it congenitally an industry? If you are a band trying to make it today...listen to these two geniuses....-

  • Kevin is truly missed. I just thrill to the unique sound of his voice.

  • TrickAssassins - thanks for the insight. I can say without a doubt that Toy Matinee is the one CD that I have listened to FAR more than any other collection of music in my life. I am no musician but grew up in a musical family. I can tell you that the music on this CD penetrated my soul. The lyrics and the melody were so addicting that the music simply did not get old. I did not even know Kevin's name until I stumbled on this. I just bought Thud on Amazon.

  • one of my favourite songs ever!!!! genius!!

  • He was too good for people too appreciate. Stellar production, Virtuostic musicianship, Prolific lyrics.

The only drivel the masses understand is Lada Gaga.

  • One of my favorite songs EVER! I still have this album on cassette =) one of the few tapes I saved from my youth. A lost gem.

  • R.I.P. Kevin Gilbert......and "roll on" Patrick Leonard.....where's the next 3rd Matinee?

  • This album was so much fun, and so damn well produced. I love it.

  • KG..great music. I have a copy of Giraffe doing The Lamb...! Thanks for the music. Love This cd!

  • Kevin's songwriting, singing, and charisma was a blessing to all of us who appreciate good music and true talent. He was a blossoming artist who succumbed to the immature actions of an unappreciative artist in Sheryl Crow. Every time I watch this video it makes me sick that he is gone. God only knows what he would have offered us had fought through his depression and stayed here on earth. I'll be purchasing the Shaming of the True very soon. Thanks Nick for keeping his dream alive!

  • Will be listening to you until the Last Plane Out

  • You were blessed to be able grow up with him and play.

I remember Giraffe and NRG. I grew up in Silicon Valley

in the 70's there when music and innovation was exploding.

The music is the soundtrack for the century. Kevin was brilliant a

musician we just don't see his kind and heart and brilliance anymore.

God Bless you Kevin and I'll be listening to you until I leave the planet

  • Karma's a mofo, Sheryl Crow! You'll get your someday for what you did to KG.

  • @myampisbroken AMEN

  • @myampisbroken wow how did sheryl contribute to his demise? i don't know anything about that.

  • Comment removed

  • @jamesha175 Just google the names and all will be revealed. You can decide for yourself.

  • I always liked this song. I wish they would have used an airplane with engines and propellers for the video.

  • Greetings from sodom... how I wish you were here

  • WOW! Like Steely Dan was reborn! Love the harmonies! Thanks to Mark & Brian (KLOS 95.5FM, L.A.) for introducing me to this group! (R.I.P. Kevin) SOOOO wish there was more!

  • @JohnWesleyPowell

That's fantastic. That's how I heard it. Mark and Brian. I know there should've been more but just to have this in my constant driving rotation shows how it really didn't age.

  • Brilliant man.

  • Beautiful genius. This album changed my life.

  • Way to go, savantiflag! I do the same thing! I loved Kevin. Saw him at the Trubador in 96'. He was amazing. My band started learning his music. I was so sad when I heard he had died. We miss you Kevin. Just imagine his voice on that Tuesday album. Coulda been sooo much better!

  • I couldn't tell you how many school assignments I have done that are based on him. I even did a critical review on Shaming of the True and did darn near perfect :) (Sort of a roundabout way of getting more people to know who he is!)

  • If there are rock bands in Heaven, Kevin is writing, singing, playing, arranging and producing music conceived in his hearth with an unfaltering commitment to the spirit of his artistic vision.

  • (For a look into Kevin's views on the music business and his messages through stunning music and lyrics, check out his masterpiece, "The Shaming of the True", which was completed after his death.)Kevin's tragic accidental death wasn't just a loss to loved ones everywhere (family, friends and fans alike); it was a incalculable loss to the world of music.

  • Kevin had infinitely scalable musical talent at and beyond the level of any contemporary artist. He was exceptionally creative and musically versatile, a sort of a modern-day Mozart. But he refused to suck up to the industry and paid dearly for his principles. Others around him (notably Sheryl Crow, an ex-girlfriend whose career his gave a huge boost to with his work on her hit record "Tuesday Night Music Club") all played along. But Kevin Gilbert always played his music and his life his way.

  • @turok0404 He died of the same thing Michael Hutchence from INXS died of - erotic asphyxiation. It's where people cut off their air supply during sex to try and heighten the sexual experience - very dangerous & crazy.

  • What an awesome tune such a profound chord progression. What a shame though Kevin Gilbert died so young @ 29...... I sure hope someone saved a seat for him on the last plane out.

  • @oooowwwwdddd They better have! It was his plane! I still mourn his loss.

  • Genius, pure unadulterated genius..... nothing else describes Kevin...

  • Kevin was one of my friends, we grew up playing music in the SF bay area (NRG, Giraffe). He was this mixture of unbelievable talent and amazing humility, never thinking he was good enough which contributed to his passing sadly. It was his humility and brilliance that drove him to be one of the best musicians I ever had the privilage of knowing. We use to play at his studio in Pasadena on Tuesday nights, that's where Cheryl Crow's first CD name came from, he CREATED her! I miss him dearly ='(.

  • @TrickAssassins Sorry for your loss. I enjoy the music he left for us if that helps.

  • @TrickAssassins Thanks for sharing this story. I really love this album and the 3rd Matinee album. It meant allot to me over the years. I never knew all of this about Kevin Gilbert only that he died some time ago. I always wished that I had seen them back in the day. His influence will live on. Again..thanks

  • @TrickAssassins . Yeah I first heard him and Marc Bonilla on KRQR 97.3 here in the Bay area and was blown away. Not only were they gifted musicians but they were so damn funny and just down to earth. I fell in love with their stuff right away. Luckily they were in town for a concert for Stanford childrens hospital and I was lucky enough to see them. Thanks for posting this dude!!!!!

  • @TrickAssassins its exactly why I can't stand her. She's so smug about the whole thing too. There's some heavy karma there. We all miss him. What a shame someone so talented left before his time.

  • @TrickAssassins It must feel good to have known him, i bet he was very sensitive, his whole music is very sensible and has a huge variety of styles. I found out about him because i heard him being played in a progressive rock sender. It was a shock to find out he had taken the plane out, i felt like i lost a very dear friend. His music inspires me every day, a near soul!

  • @TrickAssassins Thanks so much for sharing with us, Trick. Kevin is still dearly missed to this day, even by those of us who never had the joy of knowing him personally. *sigh*

  • @TrickAssassins ...You worked with Kevin ?? Talk to me.

  • @TrickAssassins If you played with Kevin you are a top caliber player. I have admired him for a long time. I have seen the studio you mention in Pasadena. I think it was a lawn mower repair place before he converted it. .....peace

  • @TrickAssassins Thank you for your insight on a brilliant musician whose songs I have admired for 20 years now. I didn't know the part about Crow. Will have to look it up.

One of my favorite lyrics to this day is, "Yeah we got dogs and Valvoline / Its a pretty damn good time!" A true wordsmith there!

  • @TrickAssassins Im sorry to hear that, i cant imagine how you must feel considering your history 2gethr, im a full time musician for 30 yrs now, im a huge gilbert fan, i know every song, even the rarest of songs that IM aware of. i can play every song note for note on 3 and 4 instruments and have recorded many in my studio simply to see if i could match production and musicianship, all for the love of his music.I wonder what hed have written next, Im certain it wouldve been brilliant. take care

  • @TrickAssassins Not too many peeps paid any attention to either Keven or Toy Matinee. He was awesome and you knew him personally. I am a Huge fan of his music and hope for his messages to carry on forever!

Every song is so heartfelt and musically enchanting. I work in the music industry and I know plenty of sound guys who still use Toy Matinee as a sound check CD!

  • Yes! Thank you very much for posting this! This is Still an awsome song!!

  • Kevin was one seriously scarily talented musician. Sheryl Crow can thank him for her entire career.

  • Spread the gospel!

I have turned SO many people away from Sheryl Crow by telling them the story :)

  • @BigHeadzDC But she doesn't. And won't. Shame. Shame. Shame on her. Sheryl Croaking. None of her stuff has held my attention since TNMC—Kevin's "other" record.

  • Yay!! they put it back!!

  • Great tune- havent heard it in 20 years. Thanks for posting

  • My husband had just left for Desert Shield when I heard this song for the 1st time.

    Still makes me emotional...after 19 years...great song...

  • When i'm applying for American Idol i will play this song!

  • I swear if you actually get on TV and sing this song I will love you.

  • Remember the first time I heard this song. I thought it was so awesome, but never heard the name of the group. Then, as fast as it came, it was gone off the radio, and I didn't rediscover it until years later. Glad I did!

  • great chorus :)

  • RIP. Kevin....autoeroticaxphixiation is no way to go,brother...

  • It beats having someone else do the strangulation.

  • @LBjim Beats having a car accident or going the agonizing cancer route.

  • neat song

  • we need more kevin gilberts

  • I'm glad I had an opportunity to meet him...R.I.P. Kevin

  • This Song should be on iTunes!

  • yes... similar way Carradine died

  • except that carradine's hands were tied behind his back and his "junk" was tied up. hands behind your back hanging from a closet = murder

  • Kevin Gilbert

  • You mean Kevin "Fuckin'" Gilbert! What a monster! We miss him greatly.

  • oh, can u link the clip? :)

  • Kevin was on the shot list to replace Phil Collins in Genesis when Phil Left but as his manager went to tell him he was dead..very tragic!!....

  • huh, starwars?

  • brilliant.

  • OK, hadn't seen this before... "now I gotta tell ya about the video idea..."

Cheesy as heck, very '90s, but the talent still comes through. Cool to see Gilbert doing his thing.

  • We lost Kevin Gilbert way too soon.

  • Kevin Gilbert, it seems you have indeed finally found passage on the last plane out. Rest in peace, you are sorely missed.

  • this song never gets old to me.

  • I agree. I see by your name that you are also a Marillion fan. I was looking at all the comments below on Stone Trek. I miss Stone Trek too! I wonder if I ever would have heard of Marillion if it weren't for Greg Stone. They have been my favorite band since he played "He Knows You Know" on his show - 1982ish

  • yup, love old and new marillion, pretty much the same :)

  • I sure wish there was a push to reissue KG's Giraffe and solo efforts (some are available, but rather rare and expensive) so we all could enjoy this talent again. The guy was an absolute genius! Great video for the time!

  • Kevin's kind of 90's gorgeous, 1:02 to 1:05 make me just wanna grab him... wish he were still around with all that talent. Glad I found this awesome obscure song, thanks KLOS :)

  • EVERYTHING about this song is perfect! The lyrics, the rhythm, the production, the vocals! Thanks a million for posting this gem!

  • Awesome! I've dug this band and "Third Matinee" for some time now but have never seen any videos. Thanks BIG TIME for posting it!!!!

  • I just became a recent fan after hearing about this band from a Jellyfish thread, this video is just as amazing as The Ghost at Number 1. The instrument layers along with the layered vocals that push the song along are just wonderful.

  • If you haven't heard any of Kevin Gilbert's solo stuff, go pick up his albums "Thud" and especially "The Shaming Of The True" and get ready to be blown away. R.I.P. Kevin!

  • Hey great news! This has been re-released on CD, available Tuesday, February 10, 2009. Visit Cd Universe, or Amazon, whatever.

Search for Toy Matinee and order away!

    Progressive heaven!

  • Release date has been pushed back to Feb. 17th.

  • Comment removed

  • This is a great song fom Toy Matinee. The first time I ever heard it was on KLOS during their rock and roll a to z countdown during the holidays last year. Does anyone know what year this song came out?

    I really appreciate your help.

  • 1990

  • Thank you for helping. I really appreciate it.

  • No problem.

  • The first time I heard this song I remember thinking "who the hell is this and I must get this cd." Had it and then lost it but am glad to know it is getting re-released on Feb. 3rd.

    RIP Kevin.

  • An awesome album, but my favorite is still his swang song "Shaming of the true". That to me is a total masterpiece. RIP Kev.

  • No question. One of the best albums of all time. Period.

  • I love this album!!!! I have the tape, and no way to listen to it :( :(

  • I remember them playing live on the Mark and Brian show, then running out to get the CD. truly a great piece of musical art.

  • Kevin was the god of music. a Muse . I had to pull off the 405 the first time i heard it on klos. I guess alot of people had to pull over like me. i had a true physical reaction to kashmir. never before and never since, exept for kevin.

  • I had the same reaction at the same time!! I was driving and listening to KLOS and was blown away. ...Recently, while hanging with a friend that works for KLOS, Kevin was brought up in conversation- I told the friend the story of when I first heard Kevin and my friend, said that he was that put the song on the air! Cool.

  • I don't know anyone who is lucky enough to possess this disc that doesn't feel it's a masterpiece, Kevin's Magnum Opus : )

  • I've got it:-)

  • i am lucky enough to be one of the rarest of owners of Kevin's Best album ever writen. "thud" with the bonus disk with Kashmir on it. Inspired by mark and brian on klos, chills every time i listen and that is often.

  • As good as Thud is, I think his subsequent release, The Shaming of the True is even better. I actually think that's his Magnum Opus, even though it was completed posthumously by Spock's Beard's Nick D'Virgilio.

  • i am so glad to finally remember how much

i loved this group, and this tape- it had such great sound, melodies, lyrics..so sorry to hear that the lead singer is gone, truly a sad ending to this story.

  • Yup, best band ever to enjoy such little commercial success. I guess they were a bit too clever for the masses. I was floored by this album, but I'm a working musician, not a consumer of music.

  • The best band in the world nobody heard of. I stumbled on this record years ago and was, and still am, dumbfounded by the brilliance of musicianship, lyrical prowess, and performance.

  • KOME in San Jose had a prog rock show on Sundays call "Stone Trek" hosted by Greg Stone. Greg turned a lot of us on to TM, Kevin Gilbert, and Marc Bonilla...among others. This, and "Things She Said", the best.

  • Wow! First time I've ever seen a reference to Stone Trek on the internet. I used to love that show, Sunday nights at midnight as I remember. First time I ever heard of people like Jean Luc Ponty, Allan Holdsworth, etc. Whatever happened to Greg Stone?

  • Good question. I left San Jose in 1993, and KOME has since become a spanish station (I might have that mixed up with KSJO). I lost track of Dennis Erectus also. What a station!

"This is Stone Trek, with your host Greg Stone...living up to my name..."

  • SHERYL CROW PWNZ

    *put flames on comments*

  • Kevin Gilbert PWND Sheryl Crow, literally :P

  • indeedy do boys and girls! simply stunning stuff, production, songs and general musicianship. accidentally bought this album 10 years ago in a carboot sale for 50 pence... could not belive my ears what i was hearing. i just wish i could have seen them live. sadly they never sold in any consideraly numbers and for all you fuckin record company slimies.... fuck you all. you are shit merchant prostitutes

  • This man's brilliance will never be equaled. I would have given anything to have spent 5 minutes in his presence. I think Kevin had the last laugh with the way he died...

  • I think he was brilliant. Steely Dan like but more accessible to the masses.

  • 18 years after this song came out and I've never seen this video until today.

I loved this song. I was in the Marine Corps stationed at Camp Pendleton when this song started getting airplay on KLOS.

It wasn't soon after that we began sending troops to Saudi Arabia of Operation Desert Shield. What a coincident!

Toy Matinee will always be one of my favorites...:)

  • Jumpstarted?!?! He WAS her career, and MADE her! Then he got canned, and she broke up with him. SC is a whore-industry-user! Her whole first album was written by Kevin. Then the idiot label said she needed to be a solo artist, and she gave in.......loser.......trailer trash

  • Well said. SC is a leech. And she sings like she has something in her mouth besides her tongue... which I don't doubt she did, half the time...

  • Kevin also jumpstarted Sheryl Crow's career and was a very underated performer as well. He is missed!

  • Ritterjunk, to answer your question about Trevor and Kevin, your partly correct. Trevor Rabin was born and grew up in Johannesburg, South Africa. Kevin Gilbert, on the other hand, was an American musician. Kevin was born in Sacramento, California and grew up in my hometown of San Mateo, California. In fact I have a family friend that used to act in theater plays with him when they were younger. Sadly, Kevin Gilbert died in 1996 of what was determined to be autoerotic asphyxiation.

  • Awesome song and excellent music video! Pretty awesome to think that a couple decades after it was produced, it holds true in an even stronger tone than ever before. PREACH IT GUYS!

Thanks for posting this song. I loved it when it first played on the radio back in the eighties and I love it even more now!

  • This is my first post, so I don't want to sound stupid ... too late :-) Kevin Gilbert and Trevor Rabin seem to have a lot in common as far as a musical style. Excuse me, since I am a yankee, but they seem to be both influenced by African music. Can someone in the know tell me if they are both from the southern part of the African continent.

  • If not one of the reatest, definitely one of the most underrated albums of all time. Simply said, excellent music.

  • I'd like to see a video using this song with a montage of Dick pics and clips.

There's no time for a conscience

    And we recognize no crime

Yeah we got dogs and Valvoline

It's a pretty damn good time

  • great song. poor Kevin Gilbert. hate the way the music industry pushes "artists" who are all image & won't promote anything too out of the ordinary.

  • Whoo-hoo -t he video's back! (On AOL web if it disappears again!)

  • Thank you Mark & Brian for helping bring such a great talent to the forefront!
