I love her voice! I saw a couple of her movies for the first time last week and the week before. Dark Passage and Designing Woman. She's a great actress and she has one of those silky husky voices fit for a classic femme fatale. And she's pretty :)
@DoraChania: Heehee. Love her, she's like a smart cat turned human. Love how the host was so tickled by her presence. "Yeaaah." "Small conference, awfully sorry." LOL!!!
To the person who commented on how she must have hated her husky voice...her voice isn't natural, it came as a result of the studio telling her that her naturally high, squeaky voice wasn't appealing. So she trained herself to use the husky voice we know now. Bogie did the same, actually - the voice we know wasn't his natural voice, either, but he needed to deepen it to sound more "manly" and tough. The two have a vocal chord disorder named after them as a result, actually!
The idea of Bogart as a "strong man" is laughable... He was 5ft8", wore gigantic lifts in movie premieres and in public appearances in general, smoked into the grave and died weighing 80 pounds. Oh well, Hollywood legends!
Not to mention that here she moves her neck and shoulder in an unbelievably sensual way. Modern plasticoid botoxed celebrities move like robots by comparison.
A very lovely lady...and a very talented actress. She obviously had a great sense of humor, even in regards to herself. Loved her husky voice. And loved watching her appearnce on the show....she was certainly the best thing that ever happened to Humphrey Bogart. I've read her autobiographies. Vastly entertaining. THANK YOU for posting this! :)
It must have been difficult for her to shake Dorothy Kilgallen's hand, a vicious gossip and arch-enemy of Bogart. It must go back to the McCarthy hearings, as I do remember reading that Kilgallen, Joseph Cotten and a few others were snitches.
Ahh, Slim. Beautiful graceful sexy smart Slim. Married Bogey when you were just a teen, from cover girl to silver screen, raised with supreme sophistication by a nice Jewish family who gave Bogey their blessing. More class a woman has the older the hubby it seems. You want me, just whistle. You know how to whistle, don't you? Just pucker and blow. Best line ever! Bogey and Bacall, it doesnt get any better than that!
What a siren! Amazing she was only even nominated once, for 'The Mirror Has Two Faces', and probably lost only because Streisand is so disliked for some reason. Jealousy is so transparent.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I just that I think she was considered more of a 'movie star' rather than an 'actress'. 'To Have and Have Not' was certainly one of her better films and performances...amazing to think she's been working for over 65 years.
And interesting that Bogie, a heavy smoker, died 53 years ago, but Bacall, also a heavy smoker is still alive and kicking at age 85! :)
ha ha she has like one of the most recognizable voices ever. The first time she answere the question she diguised her voice well but the second question and after, you could hear her real voice well. lol. "small conference awfully sorry" lol.
I've always'd loved her. And she's always been beautiful, even in her old age. I saw footage of her at some Obama thing. Still looked pretty good. And that voice is killer. Anyone remember her in 'Mirror with two faces' I thing she was nominated for an oscar. Am I right?
so classy that she deserves that rhetorical question! seriously, she is one sophisticated lady, yet not a snob or at all boring. so coquettish. i love it.
One whisper of that husky voice and youre a dead duck. She didnt look pleased. As competitive and vain as these actors are, she probably hated her husky voice.
hahaha, she was like, "Oh, damn! And I thought I disguised my voice pretty well!"
i thought she did well. i could hear some of her real voice through the french, but being able to see her had a lot to do with it. :) i love this dame. she's so classy. i want to write to her and tell her how much i loved her books and her films.
Well said. She was classy AND a dame at the same time!! Wish we got to hear more of her actual voice before the interview ended; the french lilt was smashing!!
I know I sound like an old curmudgeon (at 36!) but these WML videos truly do show how much more talented, dashing, well-spoken and witty celebrities were back in these days. I saw a lot of them, and then watched a few Letterman interviews; & the modern celebs just seemed so tongue-tied, sloppy, and shallow compared to the celebrities showcased on WML. I mean, I like Kirsten Dunst as much as the next guy, but compared to Lauren Bacall's star power she's just some dopey chick at the mall.
Not at all, im in my twenties and i still think that the stars from back in the day had way more talent than the stars of today do. Both in the arenas of music, movies and comedy.
Did Abbot and Costello, Jerry Lewis or any of the acts back in the day have to swear to get laughs? and they are still funny watching it now.
Lets put it this way..does mr. Daly do that to all his female guests. Were people whistleing when he stepped over the line..yes..watch it again..did he take advantage of the moment to paw her.I think so..Would I have done the same thing?...Well yes..I am only human..but with a little more class...How could anyone sit next to her and not go bananas.I just wonder what steve said that was so funny they had to edit it out.and only show Betty laughing. Does anyone out there in youtube land know?
I like the part when Mr. Daly says "Its been a wonder pleasure having you" Your damm right its been wonderfull rubbing his face all over hers and shoveing his nose in her hair. Who knows what else he was doing under the table. I think Betty was more than nice to put up with old perv.
