I was going to buy soybeans(deer food) for the same reason, but I called the local plant and they said it is not sold for human consumption because the rats get in the holding tanks, and some rat pee can make horses go blind-so I would not try that
If you have an LDS cannery in your area, they sell Hard Red and Hard Winter White Wheat. You can contact one of the wards (congregations) and they'll help you get some.
@quaffer22 I tried a mortar and pestle, grinding it between two rocks, and beating it with a hammer. I REALLY didn't want to spend 200 bucks on a wheat grinder, lol. Now that I have it, I'm glad I did.
Go to a feed store to buy bagged wheat, corn, oats. get bagged ,cleaned twice grain. Even tho its for animals its edible by humans. you can even wash it if you want.
@astrialkil They don't even sell wheat at our feed store. I've bought corn there and have ground it into cornmeal and made the best cornbread I've ever eaten. The corn grinder doesn't do a very good job of grinding the corn into cornmeal either. It ends up in bits just like the wheat I've shown. I cracked the corn with the corn grinder then ran it through the Wondermill and ended up with a nice cornmeal. I planted a small patch of wheat this fall to see if I can grow it. So far so good.
@imstillworkin To bad on the corn grinder and you feed store sucks. Good luck on the wheat! If you are planning on actually doing lots of wheat bread baking then you should invest in the $400 giant grain mill and put a electric motor or bicycle on it. It grinds more faster. Ive heard almost nothing nice from other hand mill except from enthusiastic beginners who soon tire of hand grinding.
Country Living Hand Grain Mill is the expensive one on amazon, I think there is another one.
@astrialkil As many people already know, the sacks of rice and legumes that you get in the stores often have instruction on the bag to inspect and pick our stone and dirt clods, which I always find when preparing these. Animal food couldn't be bagged under much worse conditions.

You can run your wheat back through the grinder more than once sometimes three to five times and you will get fine flour for your bread.

Good comparison. With hand grinder, it's pretty much true, that 'you get what you pay for'. Thanks for the demonstration.

Thanks for the comparison. You've answered a lot of questions I had about grinders.
