I saw the movie not too long ago. It was really quite touching. I'm really surprised that there was some negativity towards it. I think after Triplets of Belleville, they were expecting something that was more along those lines (i.e. wacky, somewhat sadistic) but I think this is a nice contrast.
I think the thing that really left that negativeness was that the boy and the girl never ended up together and the girl got married in the end. Also, when they met at the train rails, the guy looked back (showing that he still somewhat loved her) but the girl just kept going... Making them never really meet again. Even I get a little irritated whenever i get reminded of this movie... But this movie shows how love in real life is.

These pictures are from 5 Centimeters Per Second. I don't know if you would call it a anime. it's more like a 3 episode movie.
