SDRE was actually the first band ever to be called "EMO" in the September '94 issue of AP. The genre moved far far and way from SDRE, but they were the pioneers.

So now you know.

It was really around the year 2000 or so when emo kind of took on the form of putting a look and fashion over the quality of the music associated with it.

Sunny Day Real Estate released Diary in 1994. Emo was well on its way, but keep in mind grunge was a huge part of the early 90s. Sunny Day combined the two genres beautifully. But of course, what is the general public going to latch on to? The horribly dressed, torn-acid-wash-jean with flannel look or the jet black hair with thick glasses and overly-tight jeans? Emo wasn't about music, but it was purely about the "scene." That's why it isn't around anymore.
