In modern Ghana, the Soninke are called 'Wangara'. They were responsible for first spreading the message of Islam to the northern ghanaians, back in the 12th century. Many settled in the north a long time ago, and some are still there today. They are a well respected people in west africa.

She is praisning the shongai people of mali. the people sitting down are shongai people and Oumou sangagre is Bambara foulani. She can speak many dialects including Madinke and shoninke. The music is about the pride of Shongai people as part of Mali. I understand little shongai but all I know she is singing is the pride of the shongai people as part of Mali.

Je viens de retourne de Mali il ya trois jours (j'habite en Angleterre). J'ai vu Oumou Sangare a Bamako pendant la fete de Tabaski. Elle est extraordinaire!

Cette femme est extraordinaire, une anecdote me vient à l'esprit, ma mère ,une femme soninkée pleine de ses valeurs avait appréciait la voix et la prestance de cette artiste alors peu connue à l'époque (1988), elle acheta la cassette audio de celle-ci en 1989 et elle accoucha d'une fille, la surnomma Oumou comme la chanteuse ( alors que dans sa famille,ce prénom n'était pas commun)et décéda quelques jours après la naissance de sa fille ;;; Mash'Allah
