  • Jonny's pedals&effects solo

  • dude...I want one of those!!

  • Love the fact I learn to use this shit at uni. :3

  • The only reason they stopped is because Thom had to use the phone.

Anybody from the 90's would get it.

  • "Our guitars are more clitoris substitutes than phallus ones. We stroke them in a nicer, gentler way." - Jonny Greenwood (:

  • sorry cuz i ask,but what is that max/msp patch?

  • This is possibly the most awesome thing that has ever emerged from Jonny's guitar...

  • @Metroid00x I don't even know what did emerge from Jonny's guitar.

  • OMGGGGGGGGGG

  • I love Thom at 0:20. He's like hey Colin, While your Brother is stealing the stage for a while we can can just groove here ?

  • this video is really hot

  • In a Max/MSP patch, you still need to play the fucking guitar since the patch needs an input sound to alter. In no way is the patch doing all the work, it's simply for the benefit of producing the coolest solo ever. Besides, the resources are out there for anyone to work with so you can't put Jonny up for using Max. Drop it ;D

  • I got something similar to work! let me know if you want the max patch

    soundcloud com /seagaia/st-st-stutter

  • I just got into max/msp. Writing patches isn't that hard, if you're decent with computers and willing to do a lot of studying. I'm guessing he did.

  • I just got into max/msp. Writing patches isn't that hard, if you're decent with computers and willing to do a lot of studying. I'm guessing he did.

  • 0:24 (Phil's drumming) they should make a .gif out of that one...totally GOLD!

  • How does he trigger it from the normal sound to the patched sound? I saw this other guy use a Wii remote to trigger the patch but clearly he is not! By the way i dont listen to Radiohead or play guitar but i like musical innovation and would like to know how he does this!

  • The fact that Jonny has all of us wondering how in the HELL he did that, is brilliant. One of the best guitarists ever, in my opinion.

  • Does anyone have a copy of this patch? I'm assuming he's using both the guitar's amplitude and frequency to control certain parameters.

  • am I the only 18-year-old boy who is in love with him?

  • i don't see how this is good ? it sounds so shit

  • @basicalyimsam lame on urself!!!

u have idea to make sound like this???

  • Max/MSP patch means that your guitar broke down. Max/MSP patch can also be interpreted as the nervous manic depression.when a guitar player is angry because his guitar broke down.

    fantastic guitarist J.Greenwood !

  • Did his Telecaster just start to lag and crash?

  • To dislike this, is to dislike sex!

  • @oldamon Sex with a robot maybe.

  • Jonny is god.

  • Would love to be that guitar..

  • what a legend

  • How's the effect being triggered? He seems to be deciding when the beat repeater comes in, but he's not doing it with his foot...

  • @greentoaster HE IS USING HIS BRAIN.

  • That sounds awesome. Could someone please explain to me how it's done? :)

  • yeaup I guess if I'm mentally retarded enough to know this is a sham and not music....well so be it.

  • look how shyly thom looks at jonny at the end! its so cute!

  • Jonny Greenwood is the best!

  • Is this a spoof?

  • Happy Birthday Mr Greenwood!

  • 'It's not where you take things from - it's where you take them to.' Jean Luc-Godard

  • Now 1+1=1

  • you all do realize a lot of this shit is the effects pedal doing the work for him right?!

  • @defactobrigade no we didn't we're actually all mentally retarded.. I don't even know what a guitar is...

Listen man, it doesn't matter, they aren't "doing it for him" they are his tools and he is using them to create something that doesn't even sound like a guitar.

And actually, that's beside the point. Even if they were "doing it for him", they're Max/MSP patches which means that any program you can hear affecting his sound was written by him, so they really aren't "doing the work for him".

  • @TheParanoidAndroid1 how do you KNOW for sure, not that it really matters so much, but how do you KNOW that the patch or program was 'written by him' ? you don't.

  • @ToxicBrainSludge Beacuase He says he writes his own patches. And I fucking believe him, wich is not a hard thing to do since he's a genious

  • @yeahyeahyaha2 "geniuses" can lie too, assuming he is one. my point is that you don't KNOW for sure. you never can KNOW something, when you don't... KNOW it. maybe he did write the patch, but how much does it even matter, when there are tons of vst's and reaktor patches and max/msp patches that sound a lot like that? it's not like its completely and utterly 100% unique. It sounds similar to the 'buffer override' vst which came out in 2001.

but still, you don't KNOW that he wrote that patch.

  • Oh?, and what if the members of radiohead don't really write any of the music and lyrics and they have a secret group of super tallented muscicians behind them, wich write everything and then explain them how to play/sing it?. What if Davinci didn't paint the Mona Lisa, but instead, there was an amazing old-painter who did it and Leonardo had to kill him so he could stole the paint?, do you realise how pointless you are getting with your "I didn't see him, I don't believe him" ideological crap?

  • @yeahyeahyaha2 i'll go ahead and play devil's advocate and say that yes, for all you know someone else writes their lyrics or songs. you can hate me for that all you want but if you look back in the history of the music industry this is actually a very common thing. people ghost write raps for dr dre, people ghost write pop music, and ya know what? i would bet my balls that some well known rock bands in history had some of their stuff ghost written. there are millions at stake in this business.

  • @ToxicBrainSludge Do you have any special reason to believe Radiohead could be one of them?, Do you see something that makes them more likely to be a fake band?. I know cheat happens,. Like you said, there a dozens of thousends of bands out there, so if you don't have a clue to catch one on the move, there's no reason to throw out your suspects. Like I say, is pointless

  • @yeahyeahyaha2 i didn't say that i believed anything about radiohead or how they make their music. jesus people, quit putting words in my mouth. all i said is that YOU don't KNOW how they make it either. for all anyone knows syd barrett could have been pretending to be crazy and ghost writing for pink floyd for decades. who the fuck knows? NOBODY but the bands involved.

  • @ToxicBrainSludge I'm not gonna tell you again how pointless what you're talking about is . I'm done. Cheers

  • @yeahyeahyaha2 1)you DID tell me again 2) maybe what i'm talking about is pointless, but at least i don't worship other human beings, whether they be musicians, celebrities, politicians, or scientists who have agendas. i think as far as doing things that make the world a better place is concerned, musicians aren't near the top.

    nobody is a god.

too many people on youtube exhibit such blatant celebrity worship...

this is his job. of course he is good at it. he can do it all day..

  • @ToxicBrainSludge That Syd Barret comment is epic.

  • @ToxicBrainSludge re: Syd: seems plausible. That would have been a coup!

  • @ToxicBrainSludge By this logic I guess one should build their own guitar pedals as well. Because, as we know, they're not "100%" unique and OTHER people use them and have used them. I guess if we're real artists, we have to build our instrument too. Fuck, if you don't build everything yourself, you're fucking joke. Thank you for showing me the light.

  • @AllusiveConceptions i totally agree with your point. i never suggested that johnny greenwood's music would be something less if he didn't make the patches himself, and i don't think people NEED to get that involved in the tools they use to create art/music.

so your disagreement with my logic is stupid, because it isn't my logic. you just assumed it was. all i ever said was that it's possible he didn't make this patch, and that even if he did its not like its some totally unique thing anyways.

  • @defactobrigade its not effects pedals its a software program called max msp that helps create those sounds

  • @defactobrigade No, he creates those tracks and effects himself, and plays the guitar over it. Basically, everything you hear is coming from him. This is a way of playing Jonny Greenwood is famous for. Different than most guitar players, but every guitar player is known to be good at something with their instrument. When it comes down to effects and creating unique sounds, Jonny Greenwood is the man. He's also a great song writer, one of the best in Alternative Rock music since the 90s.

  • @defactobrigade You do realize that your mentally challenged right?

  • Stick with the guitar mate, forget composing :)

  • Anyway, the fact that many people seems upset by Jonny's guitar freak-out makes me giggle a little in the inside. This was never meant to be traditional, melodic, nice or accessible, quite the opposite. The fact that many people are freaking out about this just make it "mission accomplished" for Mr. Greenwood. Well done, sir.

  • Am I the only one who wants to just take him and run my fingers through that luscious thick hair of his?

  • I'd just like to say to @cooksey129 and @Aardvarked88 you both have quite valid arguments! The only problem is this whole personal sniping stuff... it's a bit petty. Maybe the main point is whether Radiohead create art music or popular music, both encompass a very broad spectrum of music, and sometimes cross over. Early Radiohead wasn't quite so 'out there', but they have always had that quirk about them that sets them apart from a lot of bands. But Muse are SICK!!

  • For those of you who are wondering: this was taken from their performance of "Go to Sleep" on Later... With Jools Holland.

  • @robinheil thanks i was wondering!!! its a could live recreation of it too!

  • This is just pure expression!!! he's not trying to play anything nice (In key or in a scale) thats the buety of this....Pure Expression.

  • ...phil collins on drums there

  • Jonny Greenwood: Made of Win, Runs on Awesome, Maintained by Epic

  • This is just random notes...

  • @cooksey129 Your point being??? Randomness has been an established part of classical western music since the mid-20th century. Jimi Hendrix and Pete Townshend experimented with randomness and noise in the late 60s and early 70s, as did many others. The Beatles' A Day In The Life owes much of its fame to an orchestra playing "random" notes.... "random notes" and "music" are not mutually exclusive... you just need an open mind to connect the two.

  • @danakerman Well I personally don't like The Beatles that much. They're ok, but I can't really say I'm a fan. Same with Hendrix and The Who. I mean they're ok and all but I don't see what all the hype is about them. It's not about an open mind, because an open mind can say a cat screeching is music. And that you're just too traditional with music if you don't think so. Experimentation is good yes. But this isn't really music. There's parts that sound ok, but for the majority it's just random.

  • @cooksey129 This is very clearly music, whether you or any other ignoramus thinks otherwise or not. Anyone who describes the beatles, hendrix & the who as being "ok" isn't really worth listening to when it comes to music I'm afraid.

You're a muse fan as well? Ouch.

  • @Aardvarked88 Cooksey129 is a fag, but don't fuck with Muse

  • @IncrediblyFast13 Why not? They've been desperate to sound like Radiohead for their entire career and have never come close. Subtlety makes Radiohead sublime, lack of it makes Muse cheesy.

  • @IncrediblyFast13 I am sorry you feel that way.

  • @Aardvarked88 So I am not worthy of listening to because I have different musical tastes? I apologize for not being you. And I don't understand why Radiohead fans feel so wronged by MUSE? They're first album sounded a bit like Radiohead but the others were pretty different. Why can't I listen to both and just be happy with that?

  • @cooksey129 No, you're not worthy of discussing music because you have no grasp of what music actually is. Dismissing this as being "just noise" because you don't like it makes you very ignorant. I don't feel wronged by Muse, they're a shitty version of Radiohead, nothing more.

As for your cut and paste job of the definiton of music:

"Music is an art form whose medium is sound."

Btw, lol @ listing the artists you listen to, cringe.

  • @Aardvarked88 Hmmm that's cool. You go to wikipedia for all your definitions. Well that's ok. You haven't really posted any valid points. You've just insulted my musical tastes and a group I like. Chances are many of the groups I listen to, you listen to. Such as Radiohead. Ad homenim (personal attacks or insults) is not a valid debate technique. If you want to actually put up some valid points or something that'd be cool. Without insults s'il vous plait.

  • @cooksey129 Ok, dictionary : "an art of sound in time that expresses ideas and emotions in significant forms through the elements of rhythm, melody, harmony, and color. "

Applying restrictions to what can be considered music is nonsense, if what you're saying were true then we're not allowed to call avant-garde music.. music?

Your skewed definition fails to take into account that Greenwood is being accompanied by 4 other people playing in a "structured manner"

  • @Aardvarked88 I forgot about this conversation lol. Anyways, I was going to say in one of my posts that the rest of the band was playing music but Jonny wasn't. I don't know why I decided to take it out.

You're defintion says it too though. "Through the elements of rhythm, melody, harmony, and color." (Yes I know, it's a colorful performance lol). But heres the thing, randomness and crazy junk is cool as long as it's just an element of the playing, and not the whole thing. I haven't seen this

  • @Aardvarked88 whole performance, but just this part here is just random notes. No rhythm, no harmonizing, no melody. I think, that you think I am out to put music into a box and make everything conform. Not at all, but I do think things have to have limitations. Like I said in a previous post, if you don't put limits on what music is and is not a cat screeching can then be called music. Nails on a chalkboard can be called music. That mosquito ringtone can be called music. Do you see what I mean?

  • @cooksey129 Dude, just watch the whole performance. You can't really jump on something like this if you're watching it completely decontextualized from the rest of the song.

  • @denxos I believe I already stated that lol. And I wasn't the one who freaked out. My original comment was just "this is just random notes" and I got freaked out on lolololol.

  • @cooksey129 Yes, you stated that you've only watched this clip of Jonny's solo here. So you've based your whole arguments about it without having any sense of the flow and place of the solo in correlation with the rest of the song, which is pretty esential when you want to judge music, lol. Out of context, many things won't make any sense to us. Put them in their proper place and is a whole different story.

  • @denxos No I didn't my entire argument was over whether or not randomness was music. And this clip. This solo right here. Only because I didn't see what the big deal was. This is what I was talking about. I was not talking about the song. I was not talking about his talent. Strictly this solo. And even then the argument really started when they brought Hendrix and Townshend into it lol. Oh well lol.

By the way... the song is quite good, I don't know how I hadn't heard it before.

  • @cooksey129 Just so you know, this song ("Go to Sleep") is very melodic, and this short guitar freak-out just play as its coda/climax-of-sorts. Maybe this solo won't do it for you even after watching it in the context of the whole performance, which is fine. But please, don't go around discussing something that you haven't bothered to really watch in the first place, let alone understand.

  • @cooksey129 As for the personal attacks, I apologise. I just find it hard to take anybody seriously if they label the beatles as being just "OK" when they're discussing music.

  • @danakerman And don't go all crazy on me about not really liking those bands. Yes I know they were influential and blah blah blah. But I don't really see them as the best things ever.

  • @cooksey129 perhaps you'd just prefer the same old tired blues pentatonic scale...

  • @danakerman Oh. And yes I do still enjoy the blues pentatonic. I also enjoy many other scales out there. So what if the scale has been used before?

  • @danakerman I can see I'm talking to someone whose musical horizons extend no further than the tip of his nose.

And don't make the mistake of confusing the statement "I don't like this" with "this isn't music." If you don't like this, that's fine, I can't argue with it. But' the term "music" encompasses far more than any of our own personal tastes. Study up a little on music and music history before you make statements like that, because they just make you look ignorant.

  • @danakerman I am with MUSE. I LOVE them. But I don't think they are the greatest thing since sliced bread. I can't say any one band is the best. That's up to the individual. I apologize for the numerous comments. But I felt it needed to be said. Also please don't call me names, I didn't do it to you. Why do you feel the need to do it to me?

  • @danakerman very broad to say the least. And do you know the the definition of the term music?

"an artistic form of auditory communication incorporating instrumental or vocal tones in a STRUCTURED AND CONTINUOUS MANNER" (emphasis mine)

Music encompasses far more than our musical tastes, you are right. But beyond it's own definition? Not so much. And it's not like I hate Radiohead. I love them. But I just don't see why everybody is going crazy over this saying it's soooo amazing. It's like how

  • @danakerman You see nothing. I will listen to everything from Liszt to As I lay dying. I listen to Coheed and Cambria, System of a Down, and Disciple. I will also listen to Wu- tang and Atmostphere. I also enjoy Trae and Common. Daft Punk and Infected Mushroom as well. I also enjoy listening to movie scores. I listen to Foo Fighters and Sixpence None the Richer. I love Tom Petty and Bob Dylan. Dire Straits is amazing, and Mark Knopfler is one of my favortie guitarists. My "musical horizons" are

  • noise ?

  • I was always wondering how he does this

  • as much as i love radiohead, and think its cool they use software, that was just random noise :/ jonny has done some great work how can you say this is genius..

  • how does he make those sounds?

  • @FakeFlourescentSkies he is running his guitar through his laptop, using a program called max/msp which, from what i gather here, he is using to random cut up the sound his guitar produces, add delays etc. it's a pretty neat idea, even though it doesn't sound amazing

  • How the fuck does he do that?? I've always been a big fan of Tom Morello, but over the past couple of weeks, listening to more and more Radiohead, things like this have just made me decide that Jonny Greenwood is even better!

  • @kierangrunge a but bear in mind that tom morello doesnt use software.

  • @steelundergrounder There's also the fact that Jonny Greenwood uses about 15 pedals, and Tom Morello uses only 6. But I think in terms of creativity, then Jonny has more equipment, and therefore can be even more creative, and in such a sense is better. But Tom Morello, I mean, he always has the odd solo such as Shadow on the Sun from Audioslave's first record, which shows his full potential, and obviously shows he would be better without such a limited pedalboard.

  • @kierangrunge i don't think creativity is limited by the possesion of pedals. Classical composers are some of the most brilliant and creative composers ever and used only acoustic instruments.

  • @kierangrunge i dont think creativity is limited by the possesion of pedals. Classical composers are some of the most brillaint and creative composers ever and used only acoustic instruments, no pedals involved there.

  • @mrmooz I don't have much of a knowledge at all of classical music, so can't really comment on that, except that you probably are right. I suppose from that though, as Jonny is the BBC's Composer in Residence, a talented multi instrumentalist, and also has produced other classical works, then he probably still is a better musician than Tom Morello

  • why isnt he god?

  • @fabrizioorbezo Yes, he designed/wrote the effect in a program called Max/MSP by Cycling 74.

  • um am i the only 16 year old girl who is completly in love with this 38 year old man?

  • @katenzcool NOOOOONONONO IM IN LOVE TOO. (but i'm 17 years old now)

  • @linkitachan He has a wife and three kids =(

  • @katenzcool NONONO I'M COMPLETLY IN LOVE TOO! (but i'm 17 years old now)

  • @fforflorfuckers He has a wife and three kids =(

  • @katenzcool yes, i know, with weird names. i fuckin love him (linkitachan is my sister's account)

  • @fforflorfuckers He is amazing. I want him but can't have him =( I thought his kids names were nice, omri such a unique and pretty name.

  • @katenzcool dunno... i love him, he's SO awesome, i'm happy for talk with someone who understands me : D (sory for my bad english)

  • @katenzcool you're not alone! Hahaha

  • @katenzcool you're not the only. 1+1

  • @katenzcool no but you're a faggot

  • @georgo342 obviously girls that love guys are fags.

  • @jallstars your ignorance astounds me

  • @katenzcool no, but i bet im the only 15 year old boy that is

  • @futurfry LOL

  • such an amasing guitarist jonny you're my hero

  • 25 people are upside down.

  • epic random solo is epic xD <3

  • i bet that guitar needed some serious therapy afterwards

  • @shockzrock Jonny once said : Our guitars are more clitoris substitutes than phallus ones. We stroke them in a nicer, gentler way.

    hmmm....

I want to be his guitar now...

  • @shockzrock That was the guitars therapy

  • Fucking Class! :D

  • ive seen him wear this yellow shirt quite a few times. you rock jonny!

  • COOOOOOL

  • Anybody with an ear can tell that all the Max patch is doing is basically randomly looping his input at different speeds.

If you want to drool in awe over Max/MSP, listen to Autechre.

  • @pjgonzales1 honestly, its way cooler when j greenwood does it, it has more feeling then when autechre does it

  • @jprincehouston lame

  • @jprincehouston

    your an idiot. Telecasters rule.

If you like your PRS so much, listen to the shit spewed by Creed & Nickelback, not Radiohead.

  • @jprincehouston Fool

  • @jprincehouston you are a fool

  • @jprincehouston

Yeah, however his lace sensor blue and two reds forming a humbucker, make his tone better than yours. Including his push pull knob to give him a fat tone, the stuff hes done to his guitar, makes anyone elses sound shit.

  • this is shit

  • i know it's Jonny Greenwood so it must be ok... but if anyone else played this, everyone would have said IT SUCKS

  • @marco00ve its not a melodic pretty solo its just interesting to hear the ridiculous sounds he can make come out of his guitar

  • @elurseeknay well everyone could do that with the proper guitar effect...

  • Comment removed

  • The half seconds silence before the applause says it all, literally SILENCED by one of the best bands of all time.

  • @gilbertgodlyddd: I think they we're just unsure if the song was over

  • @no that meant : "what was that fucking insane guitar solo"

  • すげー

  • yeah! ;)

  • Good god I love Jonny.

  • radiohead isn't an underrated band but I think the duo of Thom and Jonny will go down as the most underrated singer-lead guitarist duo in rock n roll history

  • @ValisX Definitely. But they're getting more and more recognised as the years go on. I think they are definitely underrated now, but in years to come they will be very well known!

  • RT offler, the track is called "go to sleep" and the effects is a software program called MAX MSP.

  • i love your screen-name

  • what song is this in?

  • a jam at the end of " Go to Sleep (little man being erased)"

  • how the hell do he do that? Effects wise I mean?

  • i'd like to know too. i notice he does stuff with his guitar, pressing something or flicking something near the bridge @RToffler

  • mental. i love jonny.

  • best. guitarest. evuh.

  • So coool!!! and original

  • Most of all I love his lovely swishy curtain of hair!

  • a live stutter patch... yayyyyy

  • Jazzy

  • is max/msp PC compatable or just mac

  • its PC and Mac compatible

  • u can get it for windows

  • @themysteriouscow mac and windows
