I agree with bonerhone. As much as I dislike and disprove of Harper and his party, I am fully aware of his intelligence and that of his advisers & cabinet. This legislation was well thought out by him and his cronies and I'm sure they intend it to go hand in hand with their plans for more prisons. The question is who will be filling those prisons, criminals as we traditionally see them or 'political' criminals, those the government considers a threat to their rule and draconian ways...

I, in re reading my initial comment, realized that I missed mentioning the TELEPHONE lines

the first two-way "telecom'/surveilance"(common term now but a concept totally outside of the realm of thinking of the day) connection

People loved the 'connection' idea and people did listen in out of curiosity ...pure and innocent ...it was this mostly human factor with technology (perhaps before the term technology was even used) relationship that has been exploited beyond the imagination of the time.

The scary thing is, Harper is NOT an idiot. He's a shrewd, intelligent politician who knows how to manipulate the public and the media into sharing his views. To underestimate one's adversaries is a very foolish thing. Take everything you read in the papers and watch on TV with a grain of salt - always be sure to do your own research.
