u should wash your hair like once every two weeks. i'm half african american and believe me i could go for months without washing my dreads without any grease but it's terrible for your scalp and they do start to smell whether you notice it or not. its like wearing a shirt every day and never washing it. I forced myself back into the habit of washing with BS/ACV weekly and even though its a bitch to have a wet mop-head for 12+ hours it feels heavenly to be clean!
You can also wash your hair with the aloe vera plant sap too ;) I do this from time to time since im growing three little aloe vera plants, surely when they get mature i will have an abundance of aloe sticks to wash my hair with when i need to.
All of the video's I've seen on this subject are women. It's possible that his hair always stayed oily because he's male. I say that because it's well known that men have higher body temps/sweat more. Perhaps we also produce more of these oils.
i think your dreads are awesome.... would never have them myself they wouldn't suit me and it's just not something i want for myself but you are totally rocking them!! love them and your style!
Hi!I have been washing with bakind soda and rinsing with ACV rinse for about 3 weeks now.My hair was greasy till the last wash(last night) ,but I have quite a problem with the dandruff/flakes.I used to have them before too.How long does it take for them to dissapear?
@pisicoaie Hi! I can't guarantee the dandruff will go away.. for some people the no poo clears their dandruff right up, but my boyfriend had dandruff before no 'poo and he still does ... it didn't go away :( however, tea tree oil seems to really help, so you could add a few drops to your baking soda solution or whatever you're using. Or you could mix it with a little coconut oil and rub that into the dandruff
My hair is not dreaded, and I never shampoo. I use diluted baking soda followed by diluted apple cider vinegar and only about every two weeks. My hair is thick, luxuriant, and never looks or feels dirty.
I think people should take into consideration that we haven't always had shampoo, and that there was a time that we didn't use it at all, and we all survived lol. GO NO SHAMPOO!
@misskitty528 I agree. I think people just assume that everyone back in the day stank and was smelly and greasy and horrible all the time, but I doubt that is true
the air is more poluted than it used to be, so the whole "people didn't always have shampoo" theory kinda falls apart here. i live in the city, tried that no shampoo thing a few years ago and they were dark and greasy.
hey! guys could start the no shampoo process by shaving their head. I just mow it all off once in a while, usually after being on a long no cut binge.
I tried this this summer actually, it gave my hair a nice wavy, relaxed look, but my scalp was itching like crazy from the sebum buildup haha. I just find that shampooing every 2 days with a scalp treatment shampoo is best for me. By the way, with the oil cleansing method, how often can you use it? Every day? and also, for someone with sensitive acne prone skin, what oils and ratios would you recommend? And is it a cleansing option that you think works well?
@IntoBlackHouse It works well for some people but not others... some people's skin likes the steaming, and other people's is irritated by it. I probably wouldn't do the whole OCM steaming thing more than like once a week, because you say your skin is sensitive. I'm not sure about the oils... it's usually jojoba with a little bit of castor oil? or olive oil with a little bit of castor oil? Maybe argan oil
@thelovevitamin Thank you. I was wondering because I've read a few places that baking soda on the face can mess up the pH of the skin, so I thought it might be the same for the hair and scalp. I think I'll try it tonight on my hair with the ACV after... :)
LOL! this video is awesome... "I recruited my boyfriend to not wash his hair" = My favorite part. I actually sort of created my own shampoo! all natural! :)
@thelovevitamin It's a combination of things, but the base is organic coconut oil & extra virgin olive oil... then there are other oils, essential oil (mint or spearmint I believe) it works pretty well! smells good and is 100% natural and I only use that now :)
@NOCTURNALCURVES I had someone on my blog say that she only washes her hair with backing soda and acv now, and her bum length hair never gets tangled anymore, where as it used to be a tangled mess when normal shampoo/conditioner. Maybe this will help your tangle problem??
@thelovevitamin Huh! Well I'll give it a shot then. I actually love the smell of apple cider vinegar, but most other people don't. Does the smell linger in your hair?
@NOCTURNALCURVES I'm not sure.. I haven't used it on mine and my boyfriend only uses baking soda, although maybe he should be using something like acv to balance the PH. I don't think the smell lingers though otherwise I doubt anyone would ever put it in their hair
@NOCTURNALCURVES I use baking soda and ACV, the ACV is a natural conditioner and I have extremely dry, curly hair that is about waist length. It works amazingly. Because of my hair type, I sometimes even rub some coconut oil into my ends after I have dried my hair using an old tshirt. Stay away from terry cloth towels and instead use a cotton tee and you wont have frizz. The ACV doesnt leave a smell at all and if you find your hair is still tangled, just use a bit more ACV in your mixture.
@heartisallwehav I actually tried this earlier today, and I really liked the feeling of using baking soda water and ACV. My hair feels great and I can already tell I won't be breaking out along my hairline anymore, but it DOES smell a little bit like ACV. Did I just not rinse it well enough?
@NOCTURNALCURVES Probably, you want to let it rinse until you feel your hair has pretty much untangled, or is really soft. Usually about a minute or two. I tend to wash my hair and then wash my body and the time in rinsing my body off is enough time for my hair to be nice and rinsed as well and no longer carrying the ACV smell.
I've switched to a natural shampoo/not washing my hair as often, and it's working great! Thanks for your suggestion about the baking soda; I'm planning on trying that method after my shampoo runs out.
I use Wen on my hair. I think that's better than normal shampoo. It seems to be really making my hair look nicer and I don't have to wash my hair every day anymore. It's kind of expensive, but Sally's does sell a similar product, and for those who have colored hair and might be worried about using baking soda it's a good alternative.
thank you!! i'm in the rocess of this, i'm on week 3 of not using shampoo or anything on my hair at all and my roots are a bit greasy but its not unmanageable and the ends are completely fine. no grease no buildup, even a little dry as normal, so thank you for this update!
@lovdog8 I just decided one day I wanted them. I don't know why, but something drew me to it and I don't regret it for a second! I also partly wanted them because my pre-dread hair was boring and limp and I was sick of it. I knew dreadlocks would make my hair more "voluminous". Maybe I should have stopped shampoo back then, and it would have fixed the problem!
@Lorena88C Hello. Hair can't grow faster or slower. Your hair is always growing circa one centimeter per month. You can massage your head or buy special growth creams but it wont help. This is genetic. If you think your hair is not growing or growing slow it is maybe because it is breaking at your hair ends.
So protect your hair ends that is all you can really do.
