I'm from Guyana and this is pretty obvious to me; Coolie comes from the word "kuli" which is a word from an Indian language (I think urdu, not sure) and it means "labourer." When the British went to India the bastardized the word and made it into "coolie." In Guyana we really don't care about the word in the bad way, we've pretty much reclaimed it but if a white boy (who is not my friend) ever called me a coolie and used it against me I'd cuss him out. I think a coolie is someone who is cool. Sometimes I think a coolie is like a coke or a beer, like something that cools you. Is it derogatory to be called a coolie. In South Africa you could end up in jail for calling someone a coolie, it is regarded as being racist

I'm from Guyana and this is pretty obvious to me; Coolie comes from the word "kuli" which is a word from an Indian language (I think urdu, not sure) and it means "labourer." When the British went to India the bastardized the word and made it into "coolie." In Guyana we really don't care about the word in the bad way, we've pretty much reclaimed it but if a white boy (who is not my friend) ever called me a coolie and used it against me I'd cuss him out. It's offensive depending on the situation.

the fist guy was on the right a coolie is an offensive name for an unskilled Asian laborer. 1598, "name given by Europeans to hired laborers in India and China," from Hindi quli "hired servant," probably from kuli, name of an aboriginal tribe or caste in Gujarat. IN INDIA, the coolies are the "busboys" who met you at the train to carry your luggage. The usually wear red turbans and red outfits. As you an imagine it was mostl;y white people using these trains. The most interatcion WPs got with indians=servants. Therefore, they called every indian they met coolies. And so, they name STUCK when the indians came to the caribbean. NOTE: An ignorant white man once called Gandhi a coolie, and made him carry his luggage, and Gandhi never corrected him.

The reason why west indian ppl call themselves coolies is because when Indentured Labourers were taken from India and Pakistan, the labourers were the coolies, or untrained workers. And The Europeans plantation owners used the word to refer to them as a whole...and that is the history behind why west indian ppl refer to themselves as coolies

he's only half right - they were originally CHINESE unskilled labourers - basically someone who carries a load. During colonial times the British used the term for workers in india & labour imported to the BWI from anywhere in asia was referred to as coolies. The guys who pull rickshaws in hong kong are still called coolies. The insult is inherent in the term as "sons of coolies" - as derogatory as "nigger" - sons of slaves. Similarly,only a coolie can call another coolie in the west indies.
