Despite all the nonsense written about Maravich destroying the Hawks who were 3rd best in NBA; it was the loss of center Zelmo Beaty to ABA, their best player ,that did them in. Walt Bellamy ,who replaced him was one of the worst players ever despite his rediculous stats. The Knicks great teams began the minute they got rid of Bells. He could turn any team into a loser. Had no idea how to play at all. Jerry Lucas beat him out for Olympics despite WB given the starting position by Pete Newell.
