THAT DAMN MECHANICAL FISH. I was scared to even swim near the gate of it. Always thought some instant game over thing was going to happen by getting eaten by it O.O
I don't know why everyone complains about this level and the boss. the boss is SO easy. all u have do to is swim into the rings in the time limit. Not very hard at all. I found this easier than Fungi Forest's boss.
Has anyone noticed that this song has elements of Blackeye's Theme from the cancelled game Dream? It really makes you feel like the spirit of Dream lives on in Rare's other games.
I find it interesting that the name of the level seems to be a combination of Gloomy Gulch and Gangplank Galleon, both of which were worlds in DKC2 in addition to the fact that Gangplank Galleon was also situated on the water. Another thing that's interesting about this level are the portraits of K. Rool which could potentially be alluding to the fact that part of Gloomy Galleon was once Gangplank Galleon.
kaptain k. rool would have been the perfect nostalgia boss for this world. Imagine lanky getting in a sword fight with k.rool on gangplank galleon then shooting a grape in his blunderbuss like in dkc2. Good times good times
oh oh i remember it was near water or something it use to scare the shit out of me.i was only like five or four now im 15 man this seriously made me cry of the memories.sucks that my copy dosnt work im trying to get another one
@JPShreddinq oh ikr this game pretty much made my childhood. oh and try getting the game on an emulator on your computer, that ususally works. the only one i know of is project 64, free and all
Ohboy, guess if the big clams in the treasure-chest scared me the first time I saw them xD BTW, so stressful music at 6:32, in that yellow robot-fish =P
I was scared because of the mechanical fish...those stupid starfishes who never stop moving stupidly and randomly.....oh...and once you turn on the lighthouse....everything gets dark.....
I always wanted to be in places like gloomy galleon or the factory when I was younger.....someday, I will built a theme park and the background music will be this!!!
@chicagoo17 "Man I swear everything was better back in the 2010s. The music, the video games and just the vibe was wat better. I miss it." That's what your kids are gonna say when they turn 60 years old.
@MrGeegus It's because of nostalgia, people. I thought the games, the music and the vibe from the early 2000s were the best. Just think about it, we had consoles with handles! We had Star Wars Battlefront, we had Super Mario Sunshine!
@toneset I hate when people get all sappy and nostalgic over games of yesteryear, as if there is no way to experience these games today. Many are great to revisit (hence why I'm on this video), but for God's sake, people, get an emulator if you're so heartbroken over these old classics that you would favorably compare them to modern games as though the comparison is objective.
I always loved this level, though I could never find my way into that blasted coin room. I'd always admire it from afar and wonder how to get into there, but I never could...
My cousins (who I played this with as a kid) told me that if you stay in the water too long in this game, a shark will come and eat you. Because of that, this level scared the crap out of me and my cousins had to beat it for me. Ah, the nostalgia. I actually just recently started replaying this game today. Brings back so many memories. Great game. The soundtrack is fantastic as well. Grant Kirkhope is an excellent composer.
@trevordabomb I bet they told you that so they could play. Like my cousins used to give me a TV remote with no battery and pretend I was playing. I fell for it...
@GCdotTK HOWEVER! Donkey Kong is owned by Nintendo, Rare just made the game, Nintendo owns DK as well as Diddy and all the others. But Rare owns Banjo, Conker, and everything else.
They should put this "gaem" in the VC they can do a lot of money. The rareware references and jetpac? why they dont change them? Rare did that with Banjo Kazooie in the Xbox
I think this is actually my favourite level. I liked the pirate theme, the music and it was challenging, but not too frustrating. I managed to do the robot fish after the 2nd try.
Plus, all the games I have for the N64 are in perfect, working condition from the day I bought them years ago, while I had to throw away many a CD from one of my brothers throwing it IN IT'S CASE. CD's and DVD's are only expected to last for a limited time, no matter how well you store them. Either they should start making cartridges again, or at least make something that will fix scratches. I don't really think a game would be worth it if I know it will eventually fall into the trashcan.

i havent played this since i was like 5 but this song brings back not very good memories... i think i was stuck on a level with this music or something :P
And another reason I don't exactly like this stage is because it feels way too massive so I'm not sure what to do first (well actually I do know that I should go to the area where Cranky's Lab is and collect and do the stuff that is possible to do there but after the I kind of have no idea what the most important objectives that aboslutely need to be done after that) and then theres the fact that all the underwater areas are so big it makes collecting bananas & coins kind of hard *2bcont.*
*Continued* It's just this level is just so overwhelming with how massive it is. Though My favorite stage is Fungi Forest, but I've forgotten how big that place is, but if I can recall it isn't as diffcult seeing as you're not searching for stuff at different massive different waterlevels and it's on dry land for the most part, and another reason I prefer Fungi Forest is because it has a relation to a Banjo-Kazooie level that was left out: Fungus Forest I find that fact to be pretty cool.
Normally I like swimming around in Water Stages especially if I have unlimited air so you would think I would have enjoyed Gloomy Galleon, but for Me this is My least favorite level, the reason why? It was way too long, it just dragged on and and on and by the time I was a little halfway into the level and I was sick of it, I was sick of the swimming gameplay and the having to collect stuff at different water levels since it goes down so deep *2bcont.*
*Continued* since it goes down so deep, it went on so long that I was just sick of all the swimming and just wanted to continued with the gameplay on land levels that didn't have as much water as Gloomy Galleon. I like swimming in games (and in reality) even with the Oxygen meter & even more when there is none but doing it for as long as Gloomy Galleon makes you do it is a little too long a little much and kind of hard not to make you get sick of the swimming gameplay even without an air meter.
@bazla123 I'd say it depends (to me personally) on which CoD you refer to, as I find 'World at War' and 'Modern Warfare 2' to be fairly shittish (I have no reason to believe Black Ops don't belong with those two shitty ones, along with the self-declared shitty CoD3)
But point being, as much as I like CoD1, 2 and 4; DK64 was such an epic win it is barely possible to word it.
Why did they have to abandon the cartridge for gaming? ALL of the games I got for my N64 still work perfectly, while all my GC and Wii games are scratched to oblivion within months! The N64 cartridges in my house have to withstand 3 young boys 12 and other, getting dropped, thrown, spat on, had juice or. . . other fluids. . . poured on them, an yet they come out still working perfectly!
All you need to clean them is a washcloth, and maybe some rubbing alcohol.
The cartridge format was part of the reason many companies who supported Ninty during the SNES abandoned them for Sony during the N64 days, most notably Square and their Final Fantasy 7. And CD games are much cheaper to make.
Just be happy the DS still sorta uses the cartridge format.
@metaXzero catridge or not nintendo 64 was more epic than those crappy shooters nowadays could ever be. Videogame industry was totally scewed because of microsoft.
@BCSpore 1. Making cartridges are expensive and was one of the turn offs for game developers.
2. Cartridges can't hold 4 to 8 GBs of data.
3. Its easier and cheaper to use dvd based media plus they hold more data then cartridges.
4.Its easy to take care of dvds for example my copy of twilight princess is in excellent condition it has no scratches at all and i had it since i got it on late 06. Don't leave your disks laying around out of its case.
But with today's technology, there are ways of making cartridges at a cheaper price, and having it hold a LOT more information than 4-8 GBs. And, cartridges are a LOT more resilient and easier to maintain. I live with 3 younger brothers all under the age of 12. It's practically impossible to keep any CD based media without scratches for any extended amount of time, even if you make sure to put each game into it's case and put it away.
I think the music should have been a gloomy remix of Gangplank Galleon from DKC, but this is nice too.

@bazla123 anytime, I'm sick of playing boring world war 2 simulators and faceless garbage. Give me nintendo and their magic anytime.

@bazla123 Yeah I'd rather go on an adventure with Donkey Kong and the Gang rather than shoot mindlessly at targets. Rareware ruled.

This soundtrack is just a variation of the Mad Monster Mansion's interior soundtrack. Still good, though.

Geez Nintendo, get the hint!

@BCSpore more information can be stored on CD's at a cheaper price
thebuzzerding 1 year ago

@thoughtsofglought
