hell yes, i got a 1984 with 12a. we put about 9 grand into the car so far. getting a 13b with a chevy small block turbo set up, running a t66 garret turbo. cocky motherfucker with a viper thinks he can beat me , i dont think so. what do you think?
My supra gets 20 mpg no problem and that on 11 psi. I'm not trying to talk shit but rotarys are cheap and fast but how reliable are they...I think they are great motors but I need some reliablity
not enough torque? look at the S2000 dude, just a matter of design, thats why the car is lightweight and/or turbo. and forced induction does the same things you listed to piston engines. once again, design. and joe public deals with the mustang so they are not the most practical or efficient either. btw, i've owned 5 rx7s so I am slightly biased, but stop hating.
Many companies have tried rotaries but due to unreliability and high maintenance as well as high fuel consumption theyve never panned out. Even the modern day Mazda engines still suffer from these problems to a degree compared to modern day piston engines.
The RB traces it roots way back to the 60's, and has nothing to do with germany whatsoever.
What is an RB? If your referring to the rotary engine than you'd be a fool to say that the German engineer Felix Wankel whom designed it has nothing to do with Mazda's version.
Also, many piston engines suffer from the same problems, and it's mostly a problem of specific design. Eventually a better rotary engine will be built, and they have gotten better already, wait for the 16x concept engine. Also, look at all the races they've won with it, and my friend has one with 289,000 original miles.
The RB is the nissan straight 6 from various skylines among other cars. Its not a rotary.
Rotaries are awesome engines with huge potential. I love them to bits personally but for a normal every day road car that the idiotic joe public have to deal with, theyre just not practical or efficient enough.
Theres not enough toque, and the answer, forced induction greatly increases cost, consumption, reliability and longevity. They also need a 2 stroke premix, which idiots dont understand.
well your right that a rotary in the wrong hands may mean disaster, but come on many rx7 owners have no idea that they need 2 stroke premix because from the factory the engine uses motor oil and automatically injects it into the engine for lubrication. Imagine how many rx8 owners there are that have no idea about this, yet have no problems because they do know to follow the service schedule and hopefully watched the dvd that comes with the car.
@therotaryrocket ya but how many times has he replaced the apex seals on that and if you say never then i call bullshit...also what rotary makes over 400whp and still get 20mpg...as a matter of fact rotarys barley make it to 20mpg they are mad inefficient
@DirtridinElCamino if u got an rx7 is cause u could care less about gas milage especially if u using it for drag racing. and apex seals? lol u can pull those engines out faster than u can change spark plugs on a camaro...
@DirtridinElCamino a set of ceramic seals wont need to be replaced unless it overheats or is tuned wrong... its a sports car... not much turbo sports cars of the 90s made 20 mpg... that was a ignorant comment...
@DirtridinElCamino Most cars making big HP (300+) dont get good hp, unless you drive it like a baby and have a hand controller/laptop for your ecu so that you can switch between a custom fuel economy tune and a performance/street tune. And the effect would be mininal. Dont get me wrong, rx7s are bad on gas, but so are mustangs, 240sx, camaro, 350z, S2k, M3 and almost every other "sports" car in the world. Including supra TT which gets City MPG: 16 Highway MPG: 22 Combined MPG: 18 from factory .
@apathy11303 bad gas mileage compared to what? a civic? then yes maybe but dont say that a camaro or even some of those other cars get bad gas mileage cause to have over 300whp or even modded and have over 400whp and still get 25-28mpg, how can you say thats bad
@rotaryturbo88 Yea, thats kind of what I just said bro... The gas mileage isnt really bad, its normal for mpg for sports cars... Thats why I was comparing it to all the other cars to show that its the norm... The only thing that'll make the mpg look bad is, like you said, a 4 banger like a Civic...
@DirtridinElCamino for power efficiency, the rx8's rotary has the best power to displacement of any engine made. yeah rotaries are bad on gas, but guess what there also badass.
its crazy what a 1.3 liter rx7 can do to a v8.. idk what GM was thinking.. Fact: the rotary engine was made by Germany but they didn't know how to make the rotary engine work.. so Mazda bought the engine and made it work.. No wonder these high-end jdm cars are freaking great. The Skyline's Motor was made by Germany also... but these two cars are known for engine heat problems..
Chevy at one point made a Rotary Corvette with 4 rotors and was planning to use it, but the whole idea was scrapped later. Mercedes made a rotary car also as well as a few others.
yep,and the only reason they scrapped the idea was because ford had released some other car and chevy didnt have the time to finish developing the rotary
renault mazda vw and a couple more experimented with the rotary engine and the corvette was i think suppose to come out in 1983 but was cancelled thats why the 84 has the same engine as the pre 82 couse they were counting on the rotary engine but did not work the vega were suppose to be rotary to compete with the rx3
Um not true, Originally this design was used in heavy bombers as an oil pump system. Felix Wankel came up with the design, from a dream, As to how to implement it as a actual Engine in the early 50's formed NSU cars which sold all over the world in the 1950-60's The difference being between the Wankel and the Mazda version is the fact that in the Wankel there was an inner chamber that rotated while the rotors and outside housing were stationary.
Nothing lame about muscle cars, they originated drag racing. Respect the elders of the strip bro. But yeah that would have been stupid if that FB had a V8. Too small of a car, no traction for a V8, it would be too front-end weight balanced.
No 1rotor engine was ever produced for Mazda cars.
the Only 1 Rotor engine that was produced was for a motorcycle, Suzuki RE5.
Any Single Rotor rotary made by mazda was for research purposes as they used MASSIVE 6mm apex seals that NEVER sealed well and actually failed by either cracking or completely chunking itself thrashing the housing in the process within a few hours run time.
OR you can fabricate your own manifold and choose whatever turbo you want. Not every turbo setup comes as a 'kit'. It just takes some research, time and a little know-how. Usually ends up being cheaper and higher quality than most commercial kits as well.
No, that's a stock bottom end and diy port job on the head and an aftermarket cam along with a junkyard turbo, Holset Hy35. The engine is a ford 2.3 liter turbo, i't has a little over 420 whp and 440 wtq. A monster indeed!

@DirtridinElCamino for 400$ you can have a set of cryo 3-pieces apex seals. made for 800rwhp street applications.
and to pull out, tear down, rebuilt, re-assembly and re-install a rotary engine takes in the average of 10-12 hours. (ive seen less, but thats a pro).
apex seals failure are mostly results of poor lubrications. if the person is smart, hell be using 2-stroke premix with his gas.
its so funny when people that dont know anything else but "apex seals" about rotary engines...
