@MrWilliamtom, Yes, singing Barbershop will do that to you.
Mr. Van Dyke was named an honorary member of the Barbershop Harmony Society back in 1999. In September of 2000, he formed his own real-life quartet, The Vantastix (vis on YouTube). He appeared on the cover of the Barbershop Harmony Society’s bimonthly magazine, The Harmonizer.
Ten years later, he appeared on the cover again, with his decade-earlier cover shown as a corner inset. He actually looked YOUNGER on the NEWER cover!
i never actually realized it was dick van dyke who did this role, and i've watched the film like a bejillion times. hes an absolute legend and such a good actor. thank you for posting :)
This is most definitely a test to see whether it was possible for Dick van Dyke to play the ancient banker, the makeup is almost there too in the test, it looks much more polished and refined in the film.
I love that Disney doesn't trash anything but keep it in their vault. Too bad a little few of these things are actually being released. Way too less. Thanks for this upload! Highly appreciated!
@Tears222 nope. It was a make-up test. Studios don't spend money on a sound mixer, equipment and sound striping just to see how the make-up plays. Plus sound on these test are usually distracting, especially since studio execs, the producers and the director are usually in the same screening room and discussing the test as it plays.
Well-he was 40 in fact at that time... not that very young... I guess Bert was stylized a somewhat younger lad, being 30 at most; But the Father--yes... I have to admit-It's a great make-up achievement... well now van Dyke looks quite alike IRL; wonder-would they now manage to make-up him the other way around, so that he looks like Bert... doubtful (without the use of CGI ofcourse...)
that's some pretty convincing age make-up for that time period, before the likes of Stan Winston and Rick Baker came on the scene.... or even Dick Smith for that matter. who made him up to look old?
This is unlikely to be an "audition." It appears to be more a "makeup test." Which is why sound isn't important, and he turns around... to show how the makeup looks.
It WAS an audition. He offered to do the part, but Walt Disney wanted to see if he could pull it off. So this was the proof to Disney that he could do it. In addition to this though, Walt also made Van Dyke give a donation to Cal Arts, which Walt was founding.
Van Dyke was so good, and so into character, that the children didn't know the old man was him until the film's premiere.
@karlaabc123 It was both a makeup test AND an audition for the part. He already HAD the role of Bert, but also wanted to do the role of Mr. Dawes Sr. Van Dyke explains in the DVD, that Disney wasn't convinced that Van Dyke could pull it off, so he make himself up as you see him and did this screen test to prove to Walt that he could pull it off and disappear behind the makeup. Walt was convinced, but still made Dick donate to the college as "payment" for taking the extra role.
@karlaabc123 I'm 37 and a teacher. I tend to know some things.
If you're going to be an actress, then it helps if you not only watch the movie, but also listen to the commentary tracks and the making-of/behind-the-scenes stuff as well. It's all there in the DVD.
@Richcelt Sorry. But you're wrong. I work for a studio. Actor's auditions are NEVER silent. Plus Disney wanted to know more than anything if Van Dyke could pull of an English Cockney accent. That was the bone of contention. Screen test never use this advanced make-up. Again, a cost restriction.
@finalorbit You neither read all of what I said, nor have you listened to what Van Dyke himself said in the movie's dvd commentary track. Dick already had the part for Bert, but he also wanted to do the old man. He did this silent, full-makeup screen test as an audition to Walt to prove that he could disappear behind the makeup. No sound was needed. It was a visual audition. And it worked. Walt gave him the part.
D.V.D. really wanted this role, even more than Bert, as it was a nice comedy character right up his alley. Nevertheless, Disney made him audition for it, and here's that actual audition.
Hard to believe that with Bert he could get an English accent so wrong, yet with Mr Dawes he could get it so right.
At first I didn't believe he actually did the Dawes voice, but there's just one word - "bonds" - where a very slight American pronunciation creeps in, proving it really is Van Dyke.
My words! Ever since i was 2 i thought it was someone else, even when i saw the credits at the end i couldn't believe it. This coming from someone who has made mary poppins a lifestyle lol.
i always knew it was dick van dyke because his eyes are distinct to me and also when he would walk and stuff the way he moved his legs was the same as bert to me.
Wow I had no idea, but now I can kind of tell, I mean if you look at him for a while and then you look at his eyes especially, thats where I can see its him.
At the end of the credits in the movie...and just by it self--- show the Elder Mr Dawes was played by Dick It has always been there.

I just finished reading his autobiography. He asked Disney if he could play both parts, and the rest is history....

The real Dick Van Dyke looks like he's in a hell of a lot better shape at 85.
They really made him up to be an old man.

He played the character well. However... couldn't (and still can't) sing in tune and the cockney accent was poor.
