  • At the end of the credits in the movie...and just by it self--- show the Elder Mr Dawes was played by Dick It has always been there.

  • OMG THAT'S DICK VAN DYKE I DIDN'T EVEN KNOW.

  • watched Mary Poppins all throughout my childhood and only JUST realised that Dick Van Dyke played both parts :O

  • Looks like my intuition was right. He DOES play two people in this. I can suss out disguises a mile off xD

  • I just finished reading his autobiography. He asked Disney if he could play both parts, and the rest is history....

  • The real Dick Van Dyke looks like he's in a hell of a lot better shape at 85.

They really made him up to be an old man.

  • @MrWilliamtom, Yes, singing Barbershop will do that to you.

Mr. Van Dyke was named an honorary member of the Barbershop Harmony Society back in 1999. In September of 2000, he formed his own real-life quartet, The Vantastix (vis on YouTube). He appeared on the cover of the Barbershop Harmony Society’s bimonthly magazine, The Harmonizer.

Ten years later, he appeared on the cover again, with his decade-earlier cover shown as a corner inset. He actually looked YOUNGER on the NEWER cover!

  • i never actually realized it was dick van dyke who did this role, and i've watched the film like a bejillion times. hes an absolute legend and such a good actor. thank you for posting :)

  • I remember it blew my mind when my mother told me that the old man was also him. He's so brilliant.

  • @Rawru The same happened to me.

  • This is most definitely a test to see whether it was possible for Dick van Dyke to play the ancient banker, the makeup is almost there too in the test, it looks much more polished and refined in the film.

  • why no sound . he is the best actor iv ever seen

  • I love that Disney doesn't trash anything but keep it in their vault. Too bad a little few of these things are actually being released. Way too less. Thanks for this upload! Highly appreciated!

  • What? No sound?

  • Is it supposed to be silent? Cause no matter what I do I'm not getting any sound

  • @Tears222 nope. It was a make-up test. Studios don't spend money on a sound mixer, equipment and sound striping just to see how the make-up plays. Plus sound on these test are usually distracting, especially since studio execs, the producers and the director are usually in the same screening room and discussing the test as it plays.

  • He played the character well. However... couldn't (and still can't) sing in tune and the cockney accent was poor.

  • @falcons1988 Shut up. He can sing beautifully in tune. He's a wonderful singer.

  • wow, never realised he played him as well!

  • god, that is one killer make-up job.

  • woah! ive loved this movie since i was little and i had no idea he played this role!

  • june 7th 1963

  • i dont hear anything. how can that?

  • Dick Van Dyke - Absolutely Great

(Another great movie with DickVanDyke: "Cold Turkey" with Pippa Scott, Bob Newhart ... - phantastic, super)

  • holy crap, i didn't realize he also played that guy! :O

  • Well-he was 40 in fact at that time... not that very young... I guess Bert was stylized a somewhat younger lad, being 30 at most; But the Father--yes... I have to admit-It's a great make-up achievement... well now van Dyke looks quite alike IRL; wonder-would they now manage to make-up him the other way around, so that he looks like Bert... doubtful (without the use of CGI ofcourse...)

  • My god, finally! I now know who this old man is :P Amazing! :D

  • @ruthiemiser same here lol i cant belive it i have been trying to look for his name everywere now i find out it was Dick Van Dyke the whole time lol

  • I didn't even knew that it was him playing the old man!!!! lol!!! that's just show you how great he is as a actor!!! lol

  • that's some pretty convincing age make-up for that time period, before the likes of Stan Winston and Rick Baker came on the scene.... or even Dick Smith for that matter. who made him up to look old?

  • Thinking he was only 37 years old... Very well done! :)

  • Its a make-up test ..............so no sound.

  • I can't hear a damn word he's saying where is the volume?

  • where is the sound?

  • there is no sound at screen tests.

  • he is an icon

  • Dick van Dyke had multiple roles.

  • yup, two i think. . .Bert (the homeless guy) and the chairman of the bank (old guy) XD

  • This is unlikely to be an "audition." It appears to be more a "makeup test." Which is why sound isn't important, and he turns around... to show how the makeup looks.

  • It WAS an audition. He offered to do the part, but Walt Disney wanted to see if he could pull it off. So this was the proof to Disney that he could do it. In addition to this though, Walt also made Van Dyke give a donation to Cal Arts, which Walt was founding.

Van Dyke was so good, and so into character, that the children didn't know the old man was him until the film's premiere.

  • @Richcelt I didn't know that was him untill now :S I watched this when I was about 6 for the first time, now im 18 xD Oblivious for 12 years...

  • @Richcelt

HELLO?!? ITs a make up test!! I audition for stuff!! I know what im talking about!!!!

  • @karlaabc123 It was both a makeup test AND an audition for the part. He already HAD the role of Bert, but also wanted to do the role of Mr. Dawes Sr. Van Dyke explains in the DVD, that Disney wasn't convinced that Van Dyke could pull it off, so he make himself up as you see him and did this screen test to prove to Walt that he could pull it off and disappear behind the makeup. Walt was convinced, but still made Dick donate to the college as "payment" for taking the extra role.

  • @Richcelt Dude thanks! I didnt know that!!! haha sorry i was all oh ur stupid....but yah thanks for the info!!

  • @karlaabc123 I'm 37 and a teacher. I tend to know some things.

If you're going to be an actress, then it helps if you not only watch the movie, but also listen to the commentary tracks and the making-of/behind-the-scenes stuff as well. It's all there in the DVD.

  • @Richcelt Sorry. But you're wrong. I work for a studio. Actor's auditions are NEVER silent. Plus Disney wanted to know more than anything if Van Dyke could pull of an English Cockney accent. That was the bone of contention. Screen test never use this advanced make-up. Again, a cost restriction.

  • @finalorbit You neither read all of what I said, nor have you listened to what Van Dyke himself said in the movie's dvd commentary track. Dick already had the part for Bert, but he also wanted to do the old man. He did this silent, full-makeup screen test as an audition to Walt to prove that he could disappear behind the makeup. No sound was needed. It was a visual audition. And it worked. Walt gave him the part.

  • @Richcelt he beggged for it

  • @DuaneTV stfu

  • D.V.D. really wanted this role, even more than Bert, as it was a nice comedy character right up his alley. Nevertheless, Disney made him audition for it, and here's that actual audition.

  • OMG, it was dick van dyke. How did I not notice it lol. Brava dick van dyke lol

  • lol. yeah. I would've NEVER known if it weren't for this. haha im still surprised!

  • Hard to believe that with Bert he could get an English accent so wrong, yet with Mr Dawes he could get it so right.

At first I didn't believe he actually did the Dawes voice, but there's just one word - "bonds" - where a very slight American pronunciation creeps in, proving it really is Van Dyke.

  • Also, if u listen at the start of the scene where he says "more money to put to work for the bank, capital boy", it sounds like D.V.D

  • Dick Van Dyke was BOTH Bert and the old guy

just like Eddie Murphy in The Nutty Professor, Van Dyke was cast in multiple roles

  • he was BOTH!

  • My words! Ever since i was 2 i thought it was someone else, even when i saw the credits at the end i couldn't believe it. This coming from someone who has made mary poppins a lifestyle lol.

  • i didn't get any sound with it, is it one of those silent things?

  • i always knew it was dick van dyke because his eyes are distinct to me and also when he would walk and stuff the way he moved his legs was the same as bert to me.

    p.s. where is the sound?

  • why isnt there any sound?

  • THAT'S Dick van Dyke? woa. Nevar knew. Looked like a vintage old coot 0.0

  • Wow I had no idea, but now I can kind of tell, I mean if you look at him for a while and then you look at his eyes especially, thats where I can see its him.

  • Thats Dick Van Dyk? well it goes to show what a great actor he is because i have seen this film well over a 100 times and i never knew who that was.

  • Didn't you ever watch the end credits??? It says Mr Dawes Sr. played by Dick Van Dyke. Der.

  • I didn't notice that was him in the film!

  • Is this supposed to have sound? Even if it's not, it's still funny as heck! Almost died laughing at the end!

  • What a wonderful actor Dick Van Dyke is! Such a talented man! There will never be another one like him!
