With online trading now its very easy to complete the pokedex.

As for arceus the legend says he came from an egg. Who do you think created the egg? And the plates to change his type.

Also if you wanna get religous Your god supposeably made humans in his own image. Arceus could be just the god of pokemon and created them in It's image.

And breeding and evolution took care of the rest.

Correction. There are 497 Pokemon. There are FOUR missingno: (glitch)(glitch)'M(glitch)(gli­tch), the ghost-like missingno, The ? missingno which will harm your game, and the ?? which won't.

Missingno wasn't a pokemon, it's a placeholder currently there are only 493 and there may be more in the future, but I don't seen pokemon breaking the 500 point just yet (if ever), the next few games are probably going to be remakes Platinum (the third game to Diamond and pearl) and the potential For The Gold and Silver Remakes is incredibly high which personally I have been waiting since FireRed and LeafGreen... But yeah those don't count as pokemon since they're glitches. Sorry.

There are TWO Missingno, one with the black question mark and the circle (which will harm your game), and one that looks like two question marks (which won't). So, there are 493 regular Pokemon and 2 glitch Pokemon, which makes 495. ^-^
