So I suddenly realized that landing on the moon is pretty much fucking pointless. Its not like its helping anything by having a human on the moon. Just a waste of money and a way to make everyone "proud to be an american".
i am not sure what the American space philosophy is ? Russia believes the survival of the human race involves stepping out into space - America is more interested in not being out done? Why else would it be? It should have a moon station by now with supporting eco systems for about 50 people. Whats it been doing the last 40 years ? Space Suttle is a disaster in progress terms. Oh well
Yuri Gagarin was a true hero. As an American, I hope that future generations of Americans will respect him with the same dignity as Russians did. He was put into a suicide mission, and came out of it with flying colors. The Russians in those days put a lot more pressure on their cosmonauts and scientists than anyone here could ever believe. Gargarin is a true hero in every sense of the word. I am glad that the astronauts who went to the moon honored him.
I think the Americans had to realize that the Russian technology at the time was far superior to the American. The rocket engine was more advanced, the Russian didn't have all those accidents that the American had.
I guess we in the west, are too focused on that Yuri Gagarin was "the first Soviet" in space, rather than first man in space.
In 50 years, or 100 or 200 years, the name Yuri Gagarin will be well known together with Columbus, Marco Polo, and Alan Shepard will be Alan-who?
@jabajabamaster All technology besides a simple camera to photograph the earth (which was a major objective that the Russians didnt meet)... Very difficult to believe Yuri was the first with what the world knows now!
@jabajabamaster No NASA's technology was more advanced than the Soviets, just look up their moon landing project. It took them more than 5 attempts before they abandoned the project completely. Also, Yuri Gagarin wasn't the first Soviet in space, there were at least 4 cosmonauts who went before him but these were all killed on re-entry and were subsequently covered up as was Soviet tradition at the time.
@jabajabamaster Russian tech at those times was only marginally better (they were passed behind a couple of years later), as for accidents, they had their share too, and more deadly, what happened was that their regime had total disregard for human life so they gambled that Gagarin would come home alive... He did! He is a hero, not the soviet regime. Yes, he will be remembered, as Columbus, Magalhães, Lindbergh, Amundsen, Chuck Yeager and Armstrong...

@russkiirap Anyone who is educated knows that Yuri was the first in space... but I agree w/ @naftafuel that USA uses propaganda to idolized american technology when Russians were greater :)
@russkiirap Its incredibly difficult to recognize that Gagarin was the first due to many issues... first being documentation - he somehow "forgot" to bring the camera with him in which he was to take a photo of earth. 2nd the numerous innaccurracies of video documentation during pre-launch, it has been proven that much of that video footage was staged days before the launch. Proof is everything with a mission such as this and the Russians just dont have it !!!

Gagarin has landed outside the capsule. The Soviets have initially denied that, but then recognized it. So how can we know that he was in that capsule during flight? The man who was really launched on April 12, 1961, died during his flight, and Gagarin was chuted from a plane. The Americans have tracked that man while he was in space, but they couldn't prove that it wasn't Gagarin.
In all fairness the USA had CIA everywhere even at the first Soyuz launch. The USA never asked for photographs because they in fact were well aware of the flight and Alan Sheppard has conceded this.
Yuri Gagarin blew the exploding bolds and exited the capsule just after reentry as he thought the capsule was in difficulty. He wasn't dropped from a plane.
Actually there is (or was) a site on you tube that shows the recovery of Gagarins capsule, and the hole where it landed, it took a while to find what was left of his body, they even had a small monument at the site. It looked like he was dead before it crashed, but who knows impact could of killed him. He did not drop from an aircraft, nor did he jump from the capsule.

usmctanks1, you're right. Many Soviet pilots died during launch or burned in atmosphere during re-entry BEFORE the alleged flight of Gagarin. Of course, the Russians don't recognize it openly, but there is a lot of evidence of it.
The Soviet Union was very close on the Moon race. The N1 main section containing 30 engines wasn't static tested and ultimately cost them. They N1 flew 6 months before Saturn 5 voyage. An amazing time.

Shepard was a true hero. And he, probably, was the first MAN who ever flew in space and returned SAFELY to the Earth, since Gagarin was an actor. There is no evidence that Gagarin was in space. No video, no audio, no photos. Nothing, except for the official statement of the Soviet news agency Tass. Gagarin has not even made a photo of the Earth when he allegedly was in space. Points well taken, and believe it or not, I DO know what you are talking about. I still don't think that worthy and amazing accomplishment merits them having "won" the space race. The Soyuz launch vehicle is a sturdy and robust rocket, but taken as a whole — in terms of the accomplishments of the Gemini program, Apollo, the Shuttle, as well as the unfolding designs for the new manned lunar program — these are undeniably far more worthy achievements by any measure. Regardless of ideology!

Take a look at NASA right now and tell me who won "the race".
i'm glad someone else knows Shepard was an idiot. he had a psychotic way about him concerning machismo and the spotlight and leadership. of course, i can respect his abilities as a flier and Mercury contributer, but wow! he really angered many military guys whose turn it was to fly and walk on the moon by 'leapfrogging' all of them to get command of Apollo 14. That was just wrong! and of those guys anger, Shepard called them 'jealous losers'. Shepard would go nuts if somebody leap-frogged him!
Wow! the real Shepard! Oh sir, how much I admire you and your colleagues from the Seven Magnificients!! Thank you very much for all your bravery and talent.
Russia with the design of Energia has today the only booster containing closed cycled engines and is capable of lifting 140 tonnes to low earth orbit.Energia due to politics was not allowed to take part in the building of the International Space Station which is a shame.
The modular based approach is only being done today and if they had got the funding then there would have been two design fully built in Russia. Now the modular design would have gone to the moon but the proton engines use hydrogen peroxide and they were nervous with all those engines.
I don't know to be honest it was a lack of funding and a little favoritism which led to the development of the N1 rocket instead of the modular based competitor which consisted of proton engines strapped around its circumference in a modular form.
Shepard was descended from Richard Warren, one of the original Mayflower settlers. Warren had many famous descendants including Ulysses S. Grant, FDR, Laura Ingalls Wilder, Johnny Carson, Richard Gere, Orson Welles, Amelia Earhart, and the Wright Brothers.
It's not that surprising when you think about it. It's more a case of many people having a common ancestor. Warren was one of the first American settlers and lived in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. All 7 of his children survived to produce thousands of decendants in America over the next four centuries, a few of which were bound to became famous.
Indeed. It's a shame he didn't live to be included in the wonderful documentary "In the Shadow of the Moon". I would love to have heard his thoughts on walking on the moon. Not to mention Pete Conrad's. He was a hoot!
thats a fact. but this idiot shepard is saying that "at that time their capabilities were greater than our" america is always with the same crap.. russians STILL have better capabilities than them in air-space technology!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
You have heard about project Apollo haven't you? The Soviets really had noting going for them after their first few successes. The US pulled ahead and never looked back once we got into gear. Even today, the only module that Russia built for the space station is substandard and so noisy as to be almost uninhabitable. Most of the successful Russian air and space technology comes from blueprints they stole from us.
russians havnt stole any technology from u or anyone else. thats what the american propaganda is telling u 24/7. that ur country is the best and ur government is making the right decisions and is spending your taxes "wisely". and they call "patriotism" to send kids to get killed for an unfair cause, invading sovereign countries with the excuse of "democracy" thats the biggest example of propaganda nowdays in america.
@naftafuel Every country steals technology. The US stole much of its technology or otherwise used foreign scientists, and Russia certainly stole lots of it too. Japan's high tech industrial society today is largely copied from the west.
It's funny how people get nationalistic and claim their country never stole technology.
@naftafuel thats actually REALLY funny that u say thats because the early russian engineers ADMITTED to the world that the soviet propaganda was lying to its own people about their objectives in space just so the people would back them up.There u have it, right from their own mouth. Anyways communism failed cuz it sucks and the russians failed by not making it to the moon...have a nice day
and they always been afraid of another way of government, thats why they always hit on russia and they wont show better stuff from those kind of places
In your face shepard

Thanks for the information!

Richard Gere's related to Alan Shepard and Amelia Earhart? That's amazing.

Alan was a hero. I wish he did not die when he did! I wanted to sahke his hand.
rj2003grad 4 years ago
Indeed. It's a shame he didn't live to be included in the wonderful documentary "In the Shadow of the Moon". I would love to have heard his thoughts on walking on the moon. Not to mention Pete Conrad's. He was a hoot!

I'd say the soviets won the space race
DeHeld8 4 years ago 3
thats a fact. but this idiot shepard is saying that "at that time their capabilities were greater than our" america is always with the same crap.. russians STILL have better capabilities than them in air-space technology!

This comment has received too many negative votes show
You have heard about project Apollo haven't you?

"you stole the technology from the germans,,,,,,,,,,,,you nicked von braun after ww2!!!!!!!!! "
So what? You think the Soviets didn't do the same? Ever heard the line "our Germans are better than their Germans"?
toddsmitts 3 years ago
@naftafuel Every country steals technology. The US stole much of its technology or otherwise used foreign scientists, and Russia certainly stole lots of it too. Japan's high tech industrial society today is largely copied from the west.
It's funny how people get nationalistic and claim their country never stole technology.

@FantasticBob7000 exactly..and both the us and russia stole the germna v-2 technology that got them both into space.
BeLikeWater1000 1 year ago
@BeLikeWater1000 Yeah I know, and the Germans stole dutch submarine technology before WWII. That's how it goes...
FantasticBob7000 1 year ago
@naftafuel thats actually REALLY funny that u say thats because the early russian engineers ADMITTED to the world that the soviet propaganda was lying to its own people about their objectives in space just so the people would back them up.There u have it, right from their own mouth. Anyways communism failed cuz it sucks and the russians failed by not making it to the moon...have a nice day
BeLikeWater1000 1 year ago
and they always been afraid of another way of government, thats why they always hit on russia and they wont show better stuff from those kind of places
