''Jesus died for somebody's sins but not mine'' seems so provocative STILL(!) in 2012!
I know in 1966 Lou Reed told anybody who would listen that if the subjects he wrote SONGS about appeared in BOOKS like 'Naked Lunch', 'Junky', 'Last Exit to Brooklyn' etc. publishers would be able to PUBLISH these subjects with (mostly) no trouble. But songs and rock and roll were a different matter. Patti has the capacity to still shock us with the very first line of her first album! QUITE an achievement!
"Jesus died for somebody's sins but not mine" - I was 13 at the time of the release, my english just good enough to understand. Wasting no time I robbed my piggybank boarded the train to the big city and purchased the cassette tape. My first album.
Endless struggles with my parents. I abused the recorder they gave me for better learning english with "Gloria" and "Horses".
"Turn that nigger music down!" they yelled. Things definitely started to take a turn in my life...
great - but NOTHING LIKE CHRISSIE HYNDE - don't think for a moment this woman opened the e way! NO FUCKING WAY! chrissie hynde shits all over her . ahem. sorry.
@samster908=Ive been into music since Xmas1965 brought a batch of Beatle 45s&who started frequenting NYC clubs like CBGBs/Maxs etc from 77 on & has seen everyone come and go since I can say that
a) Patti=artistry on THE HIGHEST LEVELwhich only a small roomful of artists in my 50+ years EVER attained (see her live versions which destroy this). b)I BOUGHT & played the first Pretenders album (and it stayed on the player there for a lonng time) =blew us away & great great too. NOONE shits on anyone
@PartyKuten0101 Good to see the younger generation actually not just taking the cheesy autotune crap and others the media shoves down everyones throat. All of the artists you mentioned are great and its great to see teenagers embrace them in an era of crap like "Friday" and "Baby"

92% of teens just like hip-hop and pop. If u belong to the 8% that listen to real music, Thumbs Up and paste this message to 5 videos of musics. DON'T LET ROCK N ROLL DIE!
When I was a senior in high school, you know how they have a little paragraph where you can put quotes or whatever? I put "Jesus died for somebody's sins but not mine" and they CENSORED IT. I mean, they did not include it at all. Nobody ever told me "Hey, choose something else"..it just wasn't there when the yearbook came out. Yet it was okay to have a billion other people saying "I want to thank Jesus Christ for helping me get to this point." etc. I was so mad :(
@glortw and that happens every day. That's what the government is there to do: fuck people over, censor their stuff and tell them what is right and wrong when they preach about freedom of speech and choice meanwhile. Fucking hypocrites. This world is run by them. There's no freedom, it's all an illusion. And people seem to be oblivious to the tyranny that actually rules this world
I went to High School with Patti and didn't know she could sing. She could draw and paint really well. She used to make cartoons in study hall that were fantastic. She would draw a picture of a dog shitting on a sidewalk and things like that. Man I wish I still had some of those pictures. We had a special name for her that my brother and his wife shouted out at a concert once. She let them go backstage. So cool, forever cool!!!
@chairde great story. i have absolutely failed 100% to ever even listen to her. if u go read the list of bands and what i have been into, on my channel,,u will see i am kinda qualified. here's the deal. when my friends 1st were playin her in "75...i no way considered her relevant. i didn't dig her pix on the cover. SHALLOW of me? absolutely. same with the ramones. too, way back then,,(an think they are POP,,,not punk) anyhow,,,great story u wrote.,,Patti was a spearhead for the whole scene.
@chairde My life has been one giant back stage pass. On my first trip to NYC in 1978 I met Patti at the restaurant/bar of 1/5th. She was so very cool and friendly, like we'd known each other all our lives. I will never forget that bony strong handshake.
"Jesus died for somebody's sins. But not mine....my sins, my own they belong to me.
A whole 45 seconds into the first Patti Smith song I'd ever heard, and I fell in love. In the years sense, and after having seen her live and briefly met her, my rapturous love for her has only grown.
She is an "artist" in the most enlightened, beautiful sense of the word. I am blessed to have experienced her aura.
youre right: although I wouldnt say this was techinically a cover of "Gloria"...the few covers that were better than the original were: Animals-House of the Rising Sun, Pretenders: Stop Your Sobbing, maybe Clash I Fought the Law
years ago I was in the musical "Return to The Forbidden Planet" and this song is in it! The villian is called Gloria... I had no idea how amazing the song was! Made me realise that we butchered it!
What a moving, real voice. Patti Smith's "Because the Night" and "Gloria" just blow! Love the words, punk sound, ovaries-on- the-table artistic songs. Now I only need to pull out those beaten down Doc Marten boots and kick a little ____. Thanks to those who support such an awesome person. My wish: Patti Smith, Iggy Pop and James Franco together on stage.
Yeah who cares what haters think? Patti Smith was awesome. She was one of THE pioneers of the NY punk scene in the 70s. Haters hate cuz they aren't brave enough to love anything or anyone.
one of the first who fronted the punk scene for woman.. someone who doesn't give a shit- her battered clothing, the withered twang within her vocals and the way she possesses a stage with such a energy.. patti is someone who has lived and what a great life she has... just a shame that so many on youtube just take digs at artists who have given to the foundations of music when there are others killing it - work it out
Dammit its 2011 and I am still listening to this, what a great song! Patti Smith is such a huge inspiration for me, my band and all female vocalists out there. If you can find it in your hearts please check out my band Hey You we are pop/punk band and have a video out and would really appreciate any input you have:)
@lkavan37 Surely the logical solution would be to click off the song; your idea seems very extreme. And, despite you being unlogical in that sense, I think it would make much more sense to cut your ears off if you dislike the noise.
Patti Smith, Commander of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres...if I'm lucky enough to ever meet her, I'll give her a salute and say "[Name], reporting for duty m'am" ...actually if I meet her, I'll probably just pass out from excitement.
MrPokernet - if you don't like it don't listen and don't post obscene comments, a person with this sort of talent is obviously beyond your comprehension...Patti Smith is an inspirational artist who makes me want to strive for more every time I hear her music... LOVE her music so much!
I hear this song - without affronting anybody - as a typical femal song. Doesnt touch me for my person in my emotional ways. Dont know anything bout her life either...
@Harlekinist lol considering it was written by Van Morrison and is about waiting for a girl named Gloria to knock on your door and make you feel good I'm surprised you think it's a typical female song!
Patti added the intro w/ Jesus, etc, i think that's throwing you off.
@cyrusfruean if nonbelievers are going to burn in hell for all eternity in the afterlife, should we live more peacefully on earth? let people say what they want and believe what they want, if the almighty are angry with them they'll find out
I never understood the punk godmother title. The Dolls were already playing before she started in music. Blondie and the Ramones and Television were playing at CBGBs before she started. The CBGBs Festival of Unrecorded Rock Talent took place before her album came out. Anyway this is an example of a poetic introduction to an old songs, just as with Horses and Hey Joe.

I'm going to get a tattoo saying "Jesus, died for somebody's sins but not mine" And I don't give a fuck how bad it's going to look when I'm old.
