Lets face it every kid from my generation wanted to BE John Wayne when we grew up. He was the FACE of the American way and spirit. With the characters he portrayed there were no shades of gray, he did the honorable thing because it was the ONLY thing to do in his eyes. Despite his rough and tumble exterior, he was a romantic at heart. He believed that America was the greatest country in the world and try to demonstrate it with every role he played. God, I'm glad he can't see the USA now.
My Father was a commercial pilot. In 1959 - 60, he flew JW to and from the movie site, Alamo Village outside of Brackettville, TX. The flights were anticlimactic because he usually slept. But my Father was allowed on set as a couple of scenes where being shot. Unfortunately, the child actors placed in the roles weren't up to par for JW's standards and had to be scrapped. If anyone would like to know what that deleted scene was about, I will communicate it on You Tube's email. Just ask me.
With a distinctive voice, walk and physical presence Wayne starred in romantic comedies, and both war and police dramas, but when Wayne saddled up he became the greatest figure of one of America's art forms, the western. Won the Best Actor Oscar in 1969 for "True Grit". Fondly, Hedda
Wayne acquired the name "Little Duke" because he never went anywhere without his dog, Duke.
Thankyou! Glad you enjoyed the video. I will be releasing a second tribute to the lovely Maureen O'Hara in a couple of months time, so keep a look-out!
