The 70s ruled, that's all there is to it. Too bad I was only 7 years old in 1978...I never knew this movie/documentary existed, brings back a ton of memories from that era, thanks for posting!
anyone else ever dream of taking a time machine and going back to these days with our skating skills we have now, and just completly owning in everything? haha
@alexrj2 Yeah but these problems are totally different. I know this is huge problem, but you were talking about money in skateboarding and now you talk about earthquake :D Wake up
Its a shame that these styles of skating are almost gone thats why ive decided to buy an old school mini and shred the shit out of my neighbors pools and canals and bomb the shit out of hills. who ever said the dogtown lifestyle was dead? were still punk rock and we honestly dont give a fuck. keep shredding.
@lesterclaypool1 For me it was the late 70s, early 80s but yes I miss everything about the 70s except that I was too young to enjoy them properly. That's why I try to relive those days in the music I listen to and until recently, the cars that I drive...pathetic I know...;P
Nice name, lol. My wife and i watched this and The Rise and Fall of Gator the Sunday afternoon that I posted that comment and both of us walked away from the viewing experience feeling kinda bad for the youth of today. How do you sneak away and do the all important personal kid shit that kids need to do when everyone, including your parents, has your cell phone number?
@lesterclaypool1 Hahaha, so true! Geez, the shit I got up to my kids would never imagine doing. But they're all on facebook all the time TELLING everyone what they're doing anyway...with PHOTOS!!
We just had school, the streets or on the rare occasion....a live one on one phone call!
My wife and her girlfriend used to prowl their suburban neighbourhood in the evenings and my inlaws would give them a curfew. My wife and Sarah got around the curfew by a half hour or so by ensuring that only one was wearing a watch that had been set back the appropriate amount of time. Of course my in-laws knew what they were up to, but the girls felt pretty clever and badass, lol.
Today, there's a satellite feeding the exact time to your cellphone. Damn rat bastard satellites!
Holy crap Val Surf in 1978....I lived there but if you went over the hill you just did not wear Val Surf gear unless you wanted your ass kicked. End of story.
@lesterclaypool1 Yeah I lived in the valley, although it wasn't something we admitted when we went over the hill and skated Kenter or a pool. I skated from 75 through 79 pretty heavily. Hit all the pools, and parks when they came along...I remember when Carlsbad opened. We had our cards for Skatercross in Reseda.
@UltimateRocker567 It was cool, but I only went twice, and never skated in that setting, half pipes and all. We haluled ass down hills and went off curbs. The other negative was that I was only 9 or 10 at the time, and most of the kids were 13-16 and had more experience with that kind of skating. The 70's were awesome, the hair the music, I was just 5 yrs too young, and when I did come of age new wave was the thing and the whole scene changed.
One thing is for sure that skateboarding could have only came into its own back in the 70's. The nannies of the world whether they be in politics, the media, or just the dogooder types of today would have killed it or sanitized it to the point that kids would have hated it.
To tell the truth I'd give anything to go back to 78 or 79 when I was 11 for even one day.
Funny, that could of been me in line 3:40 at Skateopia. I was there a few times in 1978. (Buena Park), CA I was only 9, and although I was a decent skater, I can remember being somewhat intimidated because most of the guy's were older, and better skaters, and I didn't want to get in their way. That seems like a lifetime ago!

Ha! The oldest B &W Video game Rally X (?) or something like that @ 4:23! I remember that game @ Pizza Parlours. Right after Pong and before Space Invaders!
Roller Skates, inlines weren't around at that time, but yeah, the stance they takes looks like it's hard on the knees and hips. There was a rollerskater on the vert ramp @ the Swatch Impact Tour I saw in '88 or so riding the same way.
I'm the age of the kids in this clip. Parents back then were much more accepting of the fact that kids are going to get bumps and bruises. I got a premade board with urethane wheels in '77. There was a LONG straight hill where we lived and I still have the scars.....
I have a niece and nephew who are both sharp but on top of that, they're coming up aware of the world and tough. But my best friend's kids are little hot house flowers. They'll get it...eventually.
In some cases, My Dad was a very laid back dude a big partier , a bit of a Pot smoker so Hes very opein and if I get hurt Its my own fualt and just a realy cool guy

I was negative two years old when this came out..makes me feel young. I remember when I was about 8 or 9, and the Gonz and Natas were really big, plus Powell Peralta were REALLY popular in the mid 80's.
I think that's the original anaheim park? Have a skateboarder mag with a story of that park opening up. Does anyone know the crossstreets of where that park was?
The skatepark is probaly destroyed now and is probably a factory or a parking lot or a Walmart or something. Its too bad that the government doesnt understand how much skateboarding means to us.
jay adams is supposedly living in hawaii right now and StacyPeralta is a huge surfing movie producer....doing really good.....too bad Jayman didn't have anyone to really get him on the right track, he was by far the best of the pack!
Peralta is a successful surf movie producer? I didn't know.....He made a killing during the mid 80's with the whole Powell-Peralta team...I remember him throwing that TV out of the window in 'Animal Chin'.
LOL nice I didnt know this movie exsisted...I had a membership to Skatopia...lived down the street.....Big O skatepark as well. That half pipe was fun =) But Big O had a better capsule pool....but Skatopia had the coolest clover pool...wow seems strange to see this.
