  • The most amazing thing about all of this is Rodney Mullen he was the most innovative then and is still amazingly good when i think about all the figures in skateboarding and bmx alike there is only one who has stood the test of time his name is Rodney Mullen

  • That dave dash seems like a right cunt! Swannin round in his porsche. Capitalism at its finest in the sevs. No wonder it died out - they exhausted it. See those kids having to rent knee and elbow and helmets and the till chinging in the background. U could see moms and dads reactions to it.

  • he looks like chris cole 1:14

  • The 70s ruled, that's all there is to it. Too bad I was only 7 years old in 1978...I never knew this movie/documentary existed, brings back a ton of memories from that era, thanks for posting!

  • VAL SURF!!

  • back when skaters wore gear

  • Stop masturbating that pin ball machine

  • anyone else ever dream of taking a time machine and going back to these days with our skating skills we have now, and just completly owning in everything? haha

  • 1:13 Chris Cole lol

  • Born at the fucking wrong time

  • 1:12 chris cole

  • Parents were so chill back then.

  • He has his helmet, he has his gloves.....

And he won't use any of it when you are not watching.

  • i like the parents who try to talk like they really know about skateboarding :)

    AWESOME upload! thanks!

  • my bad hobie intrduced clay wheels

  • before hobie invented urethane ,we had steel wheels, one piece of gravel and you ate it!

  • Skateguards lol

  • dogtown venice beach style from cleveland ohio much love tony alva true o.g and is stacy gay ? i like his movies either way

  • thats a cool mum at 1:54

  • "I hope they got Kryptonics or better!" Hahahahaa classic.

  • stoner mom in the beginning

  • @13ikancu

The stoner mom was kinda hot. Probably dead now!

  • I have my dad's board from over thirty years ago. My grandpa made it by hand. It has the original Trackers and Hot Lips on it :)

  • all wheels are made out of the same materials, melted jolly ranchers and Hawaiin punch

  • I know. Now a days the kid would be on his portable teleophone, listenin to his earphone radios, and his pocket video games

  • See that sweet taperkick on the counter? 1:05

  • AW MA GAHHH 1:34

  • @scheissdrek Yah! He's all like, "Damnit Mah, You're making me look like a poser!"

  • dave dash looks kinda like tom cruise

  • it doesnt exist since 1983. speculation.

  • all about money since 1978.

  • @alexrj2 And where is the problem? I am still enjoying it :)

  • @arnoldkohoutek yeah, look all the newspapers, see all the pollution all the nature being destroyed and you will see the problems.

  • @alexrj2 Yeah but these problems are totally different. I know this is huge problem, but you were talking about money in skateboarding and now you talk about earthquake :D Wake up

  • @alexrj2 of course you still can have pleasure skating but they put money

on it, it's very commercial and the ambiance are not good any more about

    the world's condition.

  • mom is a bitch 0:55

  • Great video .. like going back in time. I feel 7 again... thanks..

  • Its a shame that these styles of skating are almost gone thats why ive decided to buy an old school mini and shred the shit out of my neighbors pools and canals and bomb the shit out of hills. who ever said the dogtown lifestyle was dead? were still punk rock and we honestly dont give a fuck. keep shredding.

  • guy at 1:11 at the counter kinda looks like chris cole haha

  • "The yellow would work if we framed it with the orangish-red (aka poker chip red) outline."

I don't care how ugly and plaid and shag and orange it was, I fucking miss the 70's, man.

  • @lesterclaypool1 For me it was the late 70s, early 80s but yes I miss everything about the 70s except that I was too young to enjoy them properly. That's why I try to relive those days in the music I listen to and until recently, the cars that I drive...pathetic I know...;P

  • @guitarsehole

Nice name, lol. My wife and i watched this and The Rise and Fall of Gator the Sunday afternoon that I posted that comment and both of us walked away from the viewing experience feeling kinda bad for the youth of today. How do you sneak away and do the all important personal kid shit that kids need to do when everyone, including your parents, has your cell phone number?

  • @lesterclaypool1 Hahaha, so true! Geez, the shit I got up to my kids would never imagine doing. But they're all on facebook all the time TELLING everyone what they're doing anyway...with PHOTOS!!

We just had school, the streets or on the rare occasion....a live one on one phone call!

  • @guitarsehole

My wife and her girlfriend used to prowl their suburban neighbourhood in the evenings and my inlaws would give them a curfew. My wife and Sarah got around the curfew by a half hour or so by ensuring that only one was wearing a watch that had been set back the appropriate amount of time. Of course my in-laws knew what they were up to, but the girls felt pretty clever and badass, lol.

Today, there's a satellite feeding the exact time to your cellphone. Damn rat bastard satellites!

  • what the fuck? 2:50 there's a like a double skateboard...do those things still exist??

  • @LordOfAllFevrsNPlags

That's a homemade board, bro. You could make one yourself or show that clip to a decent carpenter and make one exist.

  • yo i own a grentec coyote II board with the same wheels that my dad had his age but we r from jersey, i am glad to be a skater

  • Holy crap Val Surf in 1978....I lived there but if you went over the hill you just did not wear Val Surf gear unless you wanted your ass kicked. End of story.

  • @ShermanOaks1972

You from that area, dude? Wasn't that dad at 2:20 a sportscaster or a newsman on one of the local stations? He looks really familiar.

  • @lesterclaypool1 Yeah I lived in the valley, although it wasn't something we admitted when we went over the hill and skated Kenter or a pool. I skated from 75 through 79 pretty heavily. Hit all the pools, and parks when they came along...I remember when Carlsbad opened. We had our cards for Skatercross in Reseda.

  • @ShermanOaks1972

Does that dude at 2:20 look familiar to you at all, other than kinda looking like Robert Redford?

My wife's from the area and it drives her crazy trying to place where she knows that man from every time that we watch this.

  • i still skate and i am 46. my wife gets nervous but i cant help it.

  • @aca319ca

At our age a fall in the shower could fuck us up for life.

Tell your wife that my wife said to relax, if you get hurt skating at least you were enjoying yourself when it happened.

  • Just after 0:06 seconds is that Rick James making skateboard wheels? Funny, yeah?

  • the guy in 1:10 looks exactly like Chris Cole! holy shit.....

  • @icharles2008 i kno right!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I wish all the skate shops are free i mean were skaters that's are life it's just like paying 10 dollars to breath

  • The girl at 3:59 looks hot

  • best skatepark iv seen

  • such a different time, i wish i lived it...

    so jealous.

    70's <3

  • THE DUDE AT 1:12 looks like Chris Cole O.o

  • I had a "Logan Earth Ski" which was a heavy board with hard wood, and then replaced it with a "Variflex" board

  • That could of been me at 3:34 I went to skatetopia in Buena Park, CA a couple of times in 1978. It was by Knotts Berry Farm

  • @cowboysfan782008 if it is u i got a ?.

what was it like riding there???

  • @UltimateRocker567 It was cool, but I only went twice, and never skated in that setting, half pipes and all. We haluled ass down hills and went off curbs. The other negative was that I was only 9 or 10 at the time, and most of the kids were 13-16 and had more experience with that kind of skating. The 70's were awesome, the hair the music, I was just 5 yrs too young, and when I did come of age new wave was the thing and the whole scene changed.

  • the shot from under the deck looking at the front truck is so rad!

  • lol is 1:13 chris cole?

  • @penguinsauce87 haha dude it looks like him

  • That kids mom had so much to say and him "I don't know, i just ride em" haha true skater!

  • One thing is for sure that skateboarding could have only came into its own back in the 70's. The nannies of the world whether they be in politics, the media, or just the dogooder types of today would have killed it or sanitized it to the point that kids would have hated it.

To tell the truth I'd give anything to go back to 78 or 79 when I was 11 for even one day.

  • 4:20 - No wonder kids were more active back then. The video games sucked!

  • @nucleusanimation

Also they didnt have the internet!

  • this feels really fabricated

  • white people

  • 58 dollars for a complete.....

    todays price..over 100

  • did that chick just say its costing her a bong? lol

  • @JetJockey87 No she said "It's costing me a bomb!"

  • Funny, that could of been me in line 3:40 at Skateopia. I was there a few times in 1978. (Buena Park), CA I was only 9, and although I was a decent skater, I can remember being somewhat intimidated because most of the guy's were older, and better skaters, and I didn't want to get in their way. That seems like a lifetime ago!

  • the reason i like old school skateboards are because they are what people call today "mini longboards"

  • remember the g&s stores. san diego was the other hotbed. my boards.. a plastic gt and then a holy hi tail and then a warped tail 2 and then a pine design. road riders to bones. remember the logan earth skis??

  • hahaha they do crowd the court, LOL

  • ... damn the half pipes was gnarly back then not flat bottom

  • this is tight, like why this is skateboarding fun!

  • Seven dollar skateboard?!

    Oh my god!

  • @tikab58 seven dollars to enter the skatepark.

  • Its 7 bucks to skate at the skatepark is what she said. Which is crazy, because in 32 years the price hasnt really changed :-)

  • it doesn't cost anything

  • Ha! The oldest B &W Video game Rally X (?) or something like that @ 4:23! I remember that game @ Pizza Parlours. Right after Pong and before Space Invaders!

  • why would they put like a creek if someone might fall in there??!!

  • lol memberships to skate parks this is odd.

  • it looks like chris cole at 00:45 lol

  • OMG I just think the same hahahha

  • @undeadcorpse521

omg thought the same thing too

  • WOAH! That one dude made rollerblading actually look cool!

  • @PeteyPizz

Roller Skates, inlines weren't around at that time, but yeah, the stance they takes looks like it's hard on the knees and hips. There was a rollerskater on the vert ramp @ the Swatch Impact Tour I saw in '88 or so riding the same way.

  • cant fucking watch it?!

  • whos the band at 4:43?

  • i hope one day people get back to pool skating

Street skating is fun but eventually it gets boring

Pool skating has always been fun for me

oh and i wasnt around back then

    im only 14

  • dude im 15 and skate bowl now instead of street in cornwall uk

    i wanna sk8 a pool to

  • damn! a legendary toft 8-wheeler at 2:50 !!!!

  • @joebloggs9674 and why are some of theme upside down?

  • The looser the trucks the better the pivot...

  • Why are there German flags above the snake run at 4:30?

  • I'm the age of the kids in this clip. Parents back then were much more accepting of the fact that kids are going to get bumps and bruises. I got a premade board with urethane wheels in '77. There was a LONG straight hill where we lived and I still have the scars.....

  • but isnt it weird that the parents now are those kids that went out and got bumps and bruises.

  • I have a niece and nephew who are both sharp but on top of that, they're coming up aware of the world and tough. But my best friend's kids are little hot house flowers. They'll get it...eventually.

  • In some cases, My Dad was a very laid back dude a big partier , a bit of a Pot smoker so Hes very opein and if I get hurt Its my own fualt and just a realy cool guy

My mom is a bit more to the left becuase she does complain when I smoke and shit, But I guess thats normal and My Dad just owns XD

  • @FelchBelcher I know what you mean...I had a big fall on a lone ride down a steep hill in 1985...DEATH WOBBLES! I think that was the last time I skated...I just stuck to hurting myself on BMX bikes...Hahaha!

  • lol "idk i just ride them" lol

  • At 3:02 that looks like Kona skate park, one of the best skate parks ever!!

  • skateboarding wasnt made fof sunts it was made fore surfing feel. my 70's board has turning axles and pivot so i can turn in a circle its efin fun and it feels efin awesome buy a 70's board and loosen the trucks i highly recomend it

  • skate for life

  • Lets see.... $59 in 1978 to buy a skateboard = $185 today counting inflation. About the same price for a board then vs now, isn't it?

  • I was negative two years old when this came out..makes me feel young. I remember when I was about 8 or 9, and the Gonz and Natas were really big, plus Powell Peralta were REALLY popular in the mid 80's.

  • Urethane wheels was the greatest invention ever.

  • I think that's the original anaheim park? Have a skateboarder mag with a story of that park opening up. Does anyone know the crossstreets of where that park was?

  • The skatepark is probaly destroyed now and is probably a factory or a parking lot or a Walmart or something. Its too bad that the government doesnt understand how much skateboarding means to us.

  • its bad the the government would never care about it unless they could find a way for them to make money off it

  • "It's a healthy sport."

No it's not, but it's the best sport on the whole world. :)

  • jay adams is supposedly living in hawaii right now and StacyPeralta is a huge surfing movie producer....doing really good.....too bad Jayman didn't have anyone to really get him on the right track, he was by far the best of the pack!

  • Peralta is a successful surf movie producer? I didn't know.....He made a killing during the mid 80's with the whole Powell-Peralta team...I remember him throwing that TV out of the window in 'Animal Chin'.

  • wat happen to jay adams and stacy

  • 7 bucks in 1978 jesus fucking christ

  • Great video. I was a skateboarder in 1978 and the kid getting yelled at by his mom really takes me back, so familiar.

  • was that kenny meens on the skates? he's raaaaad!!!

  • jus think how many great skaters this film inspired, like maybe tony hawk. any1 know what size wheels is the best to use and the best trucks are?

  • in the end, you just have to see what size wheels feel best for you. I use a 51-56 wheel. I recommend Thunder, or Independent Trucks.

  • cool thanx i use to skate awhile back and i had independent trucks then, i figured they were still 1 of the best

  • go die fag

  • u first ha ha ha

  • the guy with the skates in skatetopia looks like such a homo

  • "this is where the kids learn the art, see what the big boys can do"

  • You make yourself look even gayer trying to bash someone for they're spelling.

  • haha sick do you still ride that?

  • Thank GOD i was born early 80's.

  • 0:08 - man or woman? Fucking dirty mustache pirate either way.

  • pause at 2:52

  • thats a skateboard for a big fat ass

  • Everyone should object to paying to skate somewhere. keep skatin

  • wow those parks are soooo crowded

  • That father at 2:25 on the other hand is quite cool ... he has the right idea ! I guess this two are divorced 4 decades, now lol (;

  • the lady at 1:30 has the right idea

  • that lady talking just pisses me off

i want to stab her in the fucking throat

  • lol yeah she has an annoying voice but what I meant is she is encouraging

  • LOL nice I didnt know this movie exsisted...I had a membership to Skatopia...lived down the street.....Big O skatepark as well. That half pipe was fun =) But Big O had a better capsule pool....but Skatopia had the coolest clover pool...wow seems strange to see this.

  • 1:25 who fuckin´cares about what your parents may think!? kinda nerd stuff
