Clough and Revie are football legends in their own right! Don Revie's tactics were about getting in the oppositions face and playing physical and aggressive football. Where as Clough, preferred the subtle approach of skill, discipline and fair play! I have the up most respect for both legends, may they both RIP!
He went to Leeds for all the wrong reasons. No wonder he failed. Can you imagine if a manager took over Manchester United simply because of a personal vendetta against Alex Ferguson, the players wouldn't have it.
Revie was a jackass, but he had a point: Clough was far too stubborn. If he'd been just a little flexible, and treated Revie's men like men, he could have won them over, and who knows. It worked out for him, though: Would he be as well remembered today winning ONE European Cup with Leeds, instead of TWO with Nottingham Forest? Better question: Would the England team have been better off with Clough as manager instead of Revie? Definitely.
@yumorules it was 40 years ago almost now. Clough cannot be thought of negatively, did 'mr' revie bring 2 clubs from the ground to the top? 'mr' revie spiked the job for clough, no doubt.
Clough and Leeds just never matched. Clough disliked Leeds before he even was there. Branded them with the 'dirty leeds' marker as most did. Clough went in there and he probably could have handled it better, maybe set aside the differences from previous and respected them as the talented trophy winningplayers they were, instead of classing them as 'cheats' . The players do share the blame as well, they should have played for Clough instead of throwing their toys out the pram when Revie left.
I am not a big football / soccer fan at all. However, this is one of the most interesting and revealling peices of TV. An example of two men with big ego's, high standards and similar backgrounds clashing. Great stuff.
Brian Clough should have managed England but he wasn't a "media" man so we have to make do with media friendly managers instead of real men that win trophies like Brian Clough. Now that is a shame in football.
I was a Clough fan but you can't say Clough on his own as he never was anywhere near as successful without Taylor. That's why, on their own, Shanks, Busby and Revie eclipe Clough on his own.
Also, Clough handled the Leeds job very badly indeed.
Michael Sheen did an excellent job portraying Brian Clough. Brain Clough was one of the greatest managers of the English game and the greatest English manager never to have managed the England team
Fascinating, They didn't realise it but they are mirror images of each other, they were both from Middlesbrough for a start, they both thought they knew it all and, whisper it quietly, the Leeds team that won the championship in 1974 played 'Clough like' football. Just like Leeds had players that could look after themselves Forest had Burns, Lloyd, Gemmill and McGovern who as they say 'liked a tackle'...
@jdob1985 ohh you cyber warrior bet you have a really big keyboard to compensate for a tiny dick your not the typical l666s fan are you pity your life pity your club and pity your fans having such a terrible history and under pappa smurfh a terible future cock!
leeds united under revie were cheating dirty bastards but they were a great team when they played football. don Revie massaging the players ? MMMmmmm, wrong in every way.
Two great managers, but it's ironic from this interview that by 1978 Revie was in disgrace and Clough won the championship with only 3 defeats, and then went on to win the European Cup.
In Revie's defence though he did win the championship in 1969 with only 2 defeats. Like I said, two great managers.
Leeds weren't a participially dirty side, they were dirty side compared to today's standard and that's why they look dirty when watching videos today but every side was dirty back then. Look up Leeds 7 Southampton 0 videos and then tell me Leeds are dirty, Leeds show a montage of Leeds videos at the start of every match at Elland Road and there isn't a single tackle in it just skill. btw your insult don't work on Don, you think he's in heaven crying his eyes out because a man u or continued
@98raza20 continued- forest fan said some nasty words about him, no. He'll be in heaven incredibly proud because he is a legend in Leeds, he is getting his own statue, the fans chant his name even now. It was clough who was at times the nasty bastard, but a bloody charasmatic one. As he says, 'and i dont like germans cos they shot me dad! whats up with that?' haha!
@lukecapo7 I'm not bothered about what you said about leeds it's the fact that you're are saying they're "the most thickest football club" when you can't form an actual sentence.
@TheGodOfTheDucks yeah am actually pointing how Leeds disregard every player they have and sell them on and never see there full potential. Bringing my literature in the conservation undermines your intellect in football. Dont comment if ya gonna insult me when im only trying to say clough never was given a chance, like many other football legends they got rid of. Thick is what leeds are it sums them up and its the reason there in this position.
Clough was so mch better than Revie. He was funny, didnt play dirty football (which revie did with Leeds!) and was a talented manager. A dirty horrible side leeds were then and still are! Have no respect for them or Revie!
Brilliant battle, remember colugh won f*** all with Leeds, whereas Revie the league 2 or 3 times and a cuple of cups, and he was a young manager, 33 when he started so what a great acheivement
@r4h4al That's because Clough was only at leeds for a few weeks until they got rid of him! so hardly enough time to win anything was it. As for Revie he was a successful manager to a degree. because back then you could kick the fuck out of players and even punch them and get away with it which he encouraged his players to do and was happy in the knowledge that Leeds were well know for it - nowadays he would fucked and win nothing. In the end he retired in disgrace for wheeling and dealing.
I believe both Clough and Leeds missed an oppurtunity there. If things had gone differently, Leeds could have continued and become european and english champions. Leeds had got some players like Jordan, Mcqueen, Yorath, Cherry and possibly Shilton may have gone there with Clough. Both Revie and Clough were superb managers.
@MySilverr A good point - although the same could be said had Leeds appointed Johnny Giles and kept the continuity within the club - In 1974 there was no bigger club in the British game than Leeds -The best young players in the land would have jumped to have joined them - it's not unconcievable to say that the likes of Dalglish & Souness could have been tempted to Leeds in this era instead of Liverpool - considering the Leeds Scotish connections - had there been more stability in the club
...Clough was ambushed by these two and still came out on top. Austin (the presenter) was a Leeds a fan and Revie was Mr Leeds, they tried to stitch Cloughie up but Brian held his own.....and rightly so.
@hebber1961 He wasn't wanted by the English Football Association board, I think it was the chairman of the FA who didn't like him, presumably because of his outspoken approach to the game. The England Manager job garners a lot of media attention as well and perhaps they felt he would say something controversial sooner or later, but he was the best man for the job at the time.
The Beeb just reminded me of his fuck off Brilliance.
Loved it when he called out Leeds for what they really were. NAUGHTY LEEDS.
He was a fantastic player too, ye knaa. Phenomenal striking talent. Went on to excel in management, by being a complete TWAT and TAKING NO SHIT, AND NO PRISONERS. I respect and Admire that.
Clough was brilliant, I remember tis era well, I was 15 at the time (1974) and was hugely into football at the time, I enjoyed it much more then than now. Although, I do feel that, without Taylor, Clough was less successful.
@killsville1972 did no good at leeds though, fair play to him he did well elsewhere but the way he disrespected leeds was ridiculous considering he was manager! 44 days too long
@DaniCharlieLou92 Very true. Obviously that was Don Revie's team and it was clear that they didn't want to play for Brian Clough. As you say though, he did well elsewhere, especially Nottingham Forrest. I just wish my team, Rotherham United, could get a manager like Brian Clough and bring us a bit of success!!!
The time at Leeds is understandable. Brian took over a team built by Revie, and criticised the hell out of them before he even joined the club. In retrospect, who would do that ?? Well only someone as self-assured (and arrogant) as Brian. Leeds where never paragons of fair play, but at that time which team was ? Norman Hunter was a bad lad, but compared to Tommy Smith of Liverpool, he was a pussy. Hard crunching tackles were the norm, Leeds were no different from the rest. Brian without Peter ?
We may have been a dirty team but when Leeds United Football Club wanted to play football they produced the best at the time, im not denying we were all pretty and beautiful butin 10 years of don revie the club finished in the top 4, a great club with a great history MOT 2011/2012!
Damned United - Malditos Futebol Clube no Brasil.
Clough, what a cunt. Completely disrespected players who had won the lot and were best team in the country by a mile. No wonder he was SACKED after so short a time. Waste of space alcoholic.
@TheKBEES Brian Clough was one of the best managers in history. His achievements at Forest and Derby were clearly outstanding. Do you argue with that?
Made me sick when I saw Jonny Giles call Clough a "Genius"(which he was)when he and Bremner were the biggest instigaters of his sacking.Hope they watched when Forest won the league and European Cup and their beloved Leeds were heading for Div 2,ha,ha.
Clough should be made a saint! What he achieved at derby and forest (that's twice all you united and pool fans) will never be seen again. Ferguson and Paisley both excellent managers but both inherited quality teams with big fan base. Shankly yes he's up there just behind clough cos clough did it TWICE. Would he have been successful with a big club we'll never know he was never given a chance at Leeds player power made sure of that
love how revie is about to say the best players you'll ever see:
forest, consecutive european cup winning sides, slightly better.
mind you this was well before that so i guess we can let that go. Both of 'em among the best few managers who ever were in football, and clough the best english manager never to have managed england.
It was a great loss to England that Clough never managed the national team. He was brilliant at building teams in his own way with unpromising material. The trouble at Leeds showed he may have had a hard time at first getting England right but he could have achieved great things. I rate Ferguson higher- he was given a lot longer to succeed at Man Utd than managers would be nowadays, but his record has been incredible. Maybe Clough next, along with Shankly, Paisley, Stein..?
@mizofan No manager transformed a club to the extent of Shankly. Liverpool 1959, a club no bigger than Preston, near the foot of the second tier of English football, no trademark pass and move, no This is Anfield, no You'll Never Walk Alone, no all red strip, no world class players, a club with little identity
Ferguson inherited the richest club in the country, broke transfer records with Pallister, Ince, Hughes before 1990..the resources hes had far exceed Shankly, Paisley, Stein and Busby
@Ali74 You're right to point out the greatness of Shankly, of course i agree with you on that, but people tend to forget what Ferguson achieved at Aberdeen. Scotland sorely needs a team to challenge the dominance of the big 2 and win the League and a European competition again. Yes he's had resources at Man Utd, but still the success has been incredible and i'm among the people who believe any of the top 4 clubs would have won the league with Ferguson as manager this season
I think Don Revie was very harshly treated in 'The Damned United' which was actually a very entertaining film. I don't see what this man did to deserve such a deliberate attempt to assassinate his character. I love Brian Clough, but Don Revie was portrayed very poorly I felt.
best manager their was, a shame he never took a proper role in english football and could have changed it for the better. if that be manager or somthing else, somone like him in charge of national football could make a difference, except all we do now is blame the flavour of the month and call in a new manager, it needs to be changed from the ground up, prepare for another 30 years of hurt.
Pity people of principle like Don Revie arent around anymore.Im a Kiwi and dont really know much about the beautiful game, but im sure foulmouthed Shreks like Rooney wouldnt be allowed to get away with what he gets away with if Revie was there to control him.
shankly and paisley? two managers who had sucess at an already successful team with money, clough took over shit teams with shit players with no money and was a miracle worker, anyway wont argue with you, your a silly fenian scouse prick, surprised you can read these comments
@markbig123 You dont need to be impolite mate. When Shankly took over Liverpool they were in the Second Division and in a big mess, he not only made them champions he made them rich and install winning philosophy in every single meaning of the word. I have big respect for Clough he is one of the best managers in Britain but there are other match to him maybe even better, for me those are Shankly and Paisley, its a shame you dont pay respect for this people, how do you think you look when do that
brian clough is the best manager britain has ever seen, anyone wants to disagree havent got a clue, only manager anyone can compare that comes even close is alex ferguson but hes got the money and the players, clough done it with no money and shit players, don revie wasnt good enough to be cloughs assistant
revie had cloughy in nots ,i think cloughy was his usual pissed self,he did like his drink,he went to leeds and was out of his league,he was ok with derby and notts ,he wanted players to bow down to him, revie should never of left leeds
people go on about Don revie at England but name one manager after alf ramsey who actually has done a good job with England...from Don Revie to Fabio Capello the England job ruins careers. ONE DON REVIE, THERES ONLY ONE DON REVIE!!!
Both amazing managers, no point in saying 'clough better than revie raaa raaa' both amazing English manager, show some respect you tits, dirty leeds and proud
@beenwilson have you seen cloughs record as a player? and he won the champiosn league twice in a row and still remaions to be the fiorst englishman and the only one still to this day.
@MrGamingVidz Clough would have been a great player if his career hadn't been caught short by injury. Have you seen Revie's record as a player? Many say he single handedly won man city's f.a. in 1955 when he won the player of the year award. They called Man city's system 'the revie plan'
@beenwilson I know there both great players But i loved cloughs approach to the game, The fact he was so cocky but ina humorous and a funny way. However he has had a serious stlye of football, His goal scoring record is immaculate and his manager career was amazing he put nottingham and derby on the map! But there both still quaslity players and managers
Reputations aside, it's one of the pettiest arguments that ever took place. First rate though! Amazing how two exceptional footballing mastermind's become 12 year old kids in the playground so easily.
@chad6258 One of these men shamed English Football by been drunk in charge of a football club and assaulting paying customers - while fiddling cup game ticket money from his employers and been accussed of liking a bung to such an extent he was charged by the FA for misconduct..... The other was Don Revie who's team became the first English side to compete in Five European Finals and at the time of this interview had been the boss of the countrys most consistant football team for the last decade
@steakandsid Mr Revie who left the middle east job he in a bung storm him self ? i adore the both men as football is football and best english days were then but the don was not angel in money terms
Whatever your thoughts and feelings about these two lads (and Leeds), it's a terrible shame that there are so few real characters in the game these days. I can only think of one or two
@markyd893 Stick to Gay & Lesbo Uploads on yer channel you disfuncuntional plank - what you know about Leeds & Football in general you could write on the back of a stamp with an emulsion brush.
Clough and Revie are football legends in their own right! Don Revie's tactics were about getting in the oppositions face and playing physical and aggressive football. Where as Clough, preferred the subtle approach of skill, discipline and fair play! I have the up most respect for both legends, may they both RIP!

He was a fantastic player too, ye knaa. Phenomenal striking talent. Went on to excel in management, by being a complete TWAT and TAKING NO SHIT, AND NO PRISONERS. I respect and Admire that.
Eternal Love and Respect from NUFC.
Rest in Peace, Cloughie

Clough was brilliant, I remember tis era well, I was 15 at the time (1974) and was hugely into football at the time, I enjoyed it much more then than now. Although, I do feel that, without Taylor, Clough was less successful.

killsville1972 8 months ago
@killsville1972 did no good at leeds though, fair play to him he did well elsewhere but the way he disrespected leeds was ridiculous considering he was manager! 44 days too long
DaniCharlieLou92 8 months ago
@DaniCharlieLou92 Very true. Obviously that was Don Revie's team and it was clear that they didn't want to play for Brian Clough. As you say though, he did well elsewhere, especially Nottingham Forrest. I just wish my team, Rotherham United, could get a manager like Brian Clough and bring us a bit of success!!!

Leeds dirty cheating scum - then now and always... this was filmed when Clough was having a bad patch after Brighton and then dirty leeds.
If it had been done 6 years later when he was on top of the world with The Mighty Forest, it would have been a very different interview.
kwisnothere 8 months ago
The time at Leeds is understandable. Brian took over a team built by Revie, and criticised the hell out of them before he even joined the club. In retrospect, who would do that ?? Well only someone as self-assured (and arrogant) as Brian. Leeds where never paragons of fair play, but at that time which team was ? Norman Hunter was a bad lad, but compared to Tommy Smith of Liverpool, he was a pussy. Hard crunching tackles were the norm, Leeds were no different from the rest. Brian without Peter ?
THISREALLYBORESME 8 months ago
We may have been a dirty team but when Leeds United Football Club wanted to play football they produced the best at the time, im not denying we were all pretty and beautiful butin 10 years of don revie the club finished in the top 4, a great club with a great history MOT 2011/2012!

Damned United - Malditos Futebol Clube no Brasil.

Clough, what a cunt. Completely disrespected players who had won the lot and were best team in the country by a mile. No wonder he was SACKED after so short a time. Waste of space alcoholic.

Made me sick when I saw Jonny Giles call Clough a "Genius"(which he was)when he and Bremner were the biggest instigaters of his sacking.Hope they watched when Forest won the league and European Cup and their beloved Leeds were heading for Div 2,ha,ha.
MyCordoba1 8 months ago 3
Clough should be made a saint! What he achieved at derby and forest (that's twice all you united and pool fans) will never be seen again. Ferguson and Paisley both excellent managers but both inherited quality teams with big fan base. Shankly yes he's up there just behind clough cos clough did it TWICE. Would he have been successful with a big club we'll never know he was never given a chance at Leeds player power made sure of that
juliomendes1967 8 months ago
love how revie is about to say the best players you'll ever see:
forest, consecutive european cup winning sides, slightly better.
mind you this was well before that so i guess we can let that go.

Maybe Clough next, along with Shankly, Paisley, Stein..?
mizofan 8 months ago
@mizofan No manager transformed a club to the extent of Shankly. Liverpool 1959, a club no bigger than Preston, near the foot of the second tier of English football, no trademark pass and move, no This is Anfield, no You'll Never Walk Alone, no all red strip, no world class players, a club with little identity
Ferguson inherited the richest club in the country, broke transfer records with Pallister, Ince, Hughes before 1990..the resources hes had far exceed Shankly, Paisley, Stein and Busby
Ali74 8 months ago
@Ali74 You're right to point out the greatness of Shankly, of course i agree with you on that, but people tend to forget what Ferguson achieved at Aberdeen. Scotland sorely needs a team to challenge the dominance of the big 2 and win the League and a European competition again. Yes he's had resources at Man Utd, but still the success has been incredible and i'm among the people who believe any of the top 4 clubs would have won the league with Ferguson as manager this season

the guy who played don revie in the damned united is great casting, very similar.

I think Don Revie was very harshly treated in 'The Damned United' which was actually a very entertaining film. I don't see what this man did to deserve such a deliberate attempt to assassinate his character. I love Brian Clough, but Don Revie was portrayed very poorly I felt.

best manager their was, a shame he never took a proper role in english football and could have changed it for the better. if that be manager or somthing else, somone like him in charge of national football could make a difference, except all we do now is blame the flavour of the month and call in a new manager, it needs to be changed from the ground up, prepare for another 30 years of hurt.

shankly and paisley? two managers who had sucess at an already successful team with money, clough took over shit teams with shit players with no money and was a miracle worker, anyway wont argue with you, your a silly fenian scouse prick, surprised you can read these comments
markbig123 9 months ago
@markbig123 You dont need to be impolite mate. When Shankly took over Liverpool they were in the Second Division and in a big mess, he not only made them champions he made them rich and install winning philosophy in every single meaning of the word. I have big respect for Clough he is one of the best managers in Britain but there are other match to him maybe even better, for me those are Shankly and Paisley, its a shame you dont pay respect for this people, how do you think you look when do that

@beenwilson have you seen cloughs record as a player? and he won the champiosn league twice in a row and still remaions to be the fiorst englishman and the only one still to this day.
MrGamingVidz 10 months ago
@MrGamingVidz Clough would have been a great player if his career hadn't been caught short by injury. Have you seen Revie's record as a player? Many say he single handedly won man city's f.a. in 1955 when he won the player of the year award. They called Man city's system 'the revie plan'
beenwilson 10 months ago
@beenwilson I know there both great players But i loved cloughs approach to the game, The fact he was so cocky but ina humorous and a funny way. However he has had a serious stlye of football, His goal scoring record is immaculate and his manager career was amazing he put nottingham and derby on the map! But there both still quaslity players and managers
