Hmm, too bad you can't simply disable groups by selecting all the tracks you want to disable and option+clicking the group. It only disables that one you're clicking on rather than all of them... Seems like a neat little feature to have.
Folks- Just an old school note. Sometimes the humming of an idle tom (s) is part of the overall drum sound and can make the drum set sound much more live and robust. This is very useful ff you are recording a Jazz kit for example.
Hi there! Helpful stuff! whats your Logics version? coz mine only have left click and cmd tools. I dont have the left click option. If its function is hidden kindly help me.

I've seen more than 100 tutorials on the internet but learned jack shit. After watching this tutorial I've actually learned a COUPLE of things! Great tut man thanks
What I would do is delete all of the regions that aren't doing anything. By that, I mean finding where the drummer is hitting the toms, for example, isolating those, fading them in and out and deleting all the other material. I mean, if you don't do that, or at least fiddle with your automation, all your going to hear is humming coming from the toms.
That can happen, but you don't need to do all of that editing. Use an expander/gate to silence the toms tracks when they don't need to be in the mix. If the toms are actually "humming," make sure that they are tuned and tight!
I agree. If you've got the time to edit down toms tracks like that, that's probably the ideal, as its essentially a sample-accurate/customizable gate.
But, we use gates and expanders all the time for exactly this purpose - and with the right gates and the right settings (or if you are working with an analog recording medium, etc.) gating is a great solution.
@TheWALOS Totally agree with this. You need to maximize the editing power that a computer gives you. Edit out all the bleed from other drum tracks. Using a gate does not give you a smooth enough sound...spending time editing before hand will give a better result.
if i try to "re-do" your editing on a project here, only the track where i click with the scissors gets selected.. and not all tracks like in your video. how did you do that?
I know i can select them all with clicking below all trakcs and then select them. but thats slow and when the "cutting" is done and i want to move the tracks, again there's only ONE track selected. :(
very helpful thanks. you will probably be getting loads of questions very soon. Im just about to start editing my drums for my bands album. I had a crack tonite but just got frustrated. So i will give it a reaL go 2mo.
What interface do you use to record your drums into Logic? I mean you have a separate channel for every piece of your set, so do you use drum mics with a USB mixer, or do you meticulously record every track alone?
For this particular track, I used a Digi 003R with a PreSonus Digimax connected via ADAT. I can't remember for certain, but I'm sure I had at least 10 mics on the kit/room.
I usually track everyone at once, concentrating on drum and bass parts, and then overdub/re-record whatever is necessary (also often starting with a scratch vocal, and then going back later and tracking a final vocal). In some situations though, tracking separately is better.
Dbass - Just make sure when you group them that that option is checked (pretty sure its "region selection") Watch our video on grouping tracks, that is in there.
ADavis - thanks! You can check out our site and background on there
More good info! What is your background? You seem to really know your stuff. Also The cross fade tip in the drag menu was helpful. Keep up the good work!

Great tut man!
But I've got a problem, if I go in the edge of my waveforms, nothing happens. Do you know why?
Thx for helping us!

Do you prefer Logic or Pro Tools?

It's hard to get a gate to sound as natural as a good gradual fade-in/fade-out.
Also, I'm pretty sure if you listen closely enough, the toms hum just as much as the snares rattle when a drummer is playing.

is some body to tell me where is the APPLE+G?is that on keyboard ?please answer me whoever knows
springart09 2 years ago
When I say Apple+G, that just means hold the Apple key (aka the command key, right next to the space bar) and press G.

I can't see the right-click button. I only have 2 Buttons: Left click and command. How do I add the third???

okay, sorry i just found the answer.
(mixer -> groud drums -> group-settings -> region-selection (edit) ) region-selection was not activated
jipchen 2 years ago
You can use Apple+G to quickly enable/disable groups in mixer.

Do you produce at 96, 88.1 or 44.1??
great tutorial, thanx for sharing your wisdom
Roelandvinken 3 years ago
This tune was done at 44.1/24
I typically prefer to do projects at 88.2/24, but it depends on the nature of the project (and how much disk space I need to allocate)

how do you make an edit point? where it splits the audio to then click and drag. seems basic but i'm a convert from tools
cheers

In this video, I show how to select the scissors tool as one of the clicks. You can use that tool to separate.

Did you have to do anything special to group all of those regions that way other than assigning the group?
