I have a huge problem. My explorer.exe isn't really explorer.exe . It only says Explorer

And when I change it to Explorer.old and replace it, my whole bar (on the bottom of my screen) goes black, and I can not see my desktop, or anything except the windows I already have open. I've done a System Restore, and tried it over again, with the same result. I even tried changing it to Explorer.exe.old instead of just Explorer.old, didn't work.

Any ideas?

@JonatanGFX open some folder for example documents and go; organise>>folder and search options>>view tab>>uncheck Hide extensions for known file types

easy fix if you can't change explorer.exe to explorer.exe.old. Take ownership of all of the 'WINDOWS' foler (takes about 5 mins) then rename, easy.

Can you please note that this doesn't work on windows 7 home premium or home basic? I mean really, that's half of these comments. And it's not mentioned anywhere that you need Ultimate or the equivalent, but after a few hours of searching nothing I've tried will work on my home premium past the first part, just the theme.

I don't know about your computer, but I also have Home Premium and it worked for me. Only struggle I had was with changing explorer.exe to .old but got that figured out. Everything is running great so far. What are you stuck on?

@vueg08 I can't take ownership of system files, because add.reg won't open for me, for some bull. problems. Researched it a lot, just came to the conclusion my win7 home premium won't let me use .reg files and all that they entitle. Can't change registrys.

I'm not exactly sure what you mean but this might help. Your computer had hide your file extension so you can't see the file as explorer.exe. To show the file extension for all files on your computer go to "Control Panel", click "Appearance and Personalization", click "Folder Option", under "View tab" in the Advanced setting uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types." This would show your files types. So now change explorer.exe to explorer.exe.old. Hopes this helps!

I also didn't like the login screen but he did described it in the video. To fix the stupid music when you start your computer is to restore imageres.dll. Go to C:\Windows\System32\ and look for imageres.dll. Rename "imageres.dll" to "imageres.dll.old.old" or for my instance I new rename it .new because I don't plan on deleting it and than rename "imageres.dll.old" to "imageres.dll". That should fix the problem.

i was in the middle of changing the files in system32, when all of a sudden it wouldnt let me change any of the files.

i got to shell32.dll and tried to change the name to shell32.dll.old and then when i moved the other shell32.dll from the theme folder it said something about an unknown publisher trying to install things, so i hit allow, but now it wont let me change or add files to system32...

please help as soon as possible because i dont know if having only a shel32.dll.old file is bad

@TheKissFan4Ever Are you on 64, or 32 bit? If you're on 32 bit leave it, if you're on 64, use some methods described in the description about 'explorer.exe overwrite' and apply it to syswow64.

@Nstudiosify Basically, you need to make sure your default device is selected in 'Audio Mangement' in windows. If that fails, update any drivers to any audio systems you may have (realtek for example).

@mattsbars Like stated in the beginning of the tutorial, if something like this happens, type sfc /scannow in command prompt to restore files. I don't know how your computer crashed during the install, but that's never good in any case. Use sfc /scannow to restore your files.
