Sakuraba was one guy who showed the Cocky Gracies that they can be beaten at their own game. I love BJJ, it has changed my life in the past 5 years of training it. I am now a purple belt but BJJ is by no means perfect. Every single martial art has weaknesses. If you're going against someone who has no idea what BJJ is in the street, you'd win every time if you force him to play your game. But BJJ alone in an MMA fight won't get you anywhere TODAY.

Put credit where it is due. Kosen Judo = Origin of BJJ. Rickson said in his book that the japanese held back on teaching and taught only the basics because they were non-japanese and thus had to learn and evolve the art on their own. Helio did improve it, But he did not invent it. ALL of it is still from Kosen Judo.
I just got my blue belt at the Gracie Academy and participated in their lessons. Greatest experience of my life. Everyone who lives in Torrance, CA are lucky to have that academy there.

I used to think that they were dishonorable for not letting the guy go the instant they tapped but I learned over time that this was a time that people didnt want to admit they tapped because they were so supprised at the submission theirselves and wasnt sure they were defeated. They didnt recognize the technique or it came on them for so quick that they only tapped because of desperation. This desperation was well called for because they were about to be damaged.
1. Royce vs. Gerard Gordeau - Gerard Bit Royce (which was illegal), so Royce held on for him. You can see him talk about it saying (You know what you did)
2. Royce vs Ken Shamrock - Shamrock tapped royce, royce let go..ref didn't see and almost let the fight continue when Ken lied.
So royce said..he won't let go of anymore submissions till the REF..stops it. Which is exactly how it works today ever since.

Maeda sensei only studied Judo n Sumo then taught the gracies. Most people are worried about getting thier face pounded on than hitting the other person in the balls. Its different when your in that situation and explain to me whats the big deal about eye shots? I know its like a extremly big deal but everyone makes it seem like thats all you need.

A guy on top of you in mount has much better position to rip your eyeballs out of your skull than if you are underneath him. Who is to say that just cause someone is using jiu jitsu in a street fight they can't use those same dirty tactics?

Put credit where it is due. Kosen Judo = Origin of BJJ. Rickson said in his book that the japanese held back on teaching and taught only the basics because they were non-japanese and thus had to learn and evolve the art on their own. Helio did improve it, But he did not invent it. ALL of it is still from Kosen Judo.

I just got my blue belt at the Gracie Academy and participated in their lessons. Greatest experience of my life. Everyone who lives in Torrance, CA are lucky to have that academy there.

You are lucky to live in Torrance and get the opportunity to train at the Gracie Academy. I live way closer to a Gracie Barra school and signed up with the Gracie Barra instead. You're right! Going to a Gracie school is a great experience!

I used to think that they were dishonorable for not letting the guy go the instant they tapped but I learned over time that this was a time that people didnt want to admit they tapped because they were so supprised at the submission theirselves and wasnt sure they were defeated. They didnt recognize the technique or it came on them for so quick that they only tapped because of desperation. This desperation was well called for because they were about to be damaged.

You don't know the REASONS.
1. Royce vs. Gerard Gordeau - Gerard Bit Royce (which was illegal), so Royce held on for him. You can see him talk about it saying (You know what you did)
2. Royce vs Ken Shamrock - Shamrock tapped royce, royce let go..ref didn't see and almost let the fight continue when Ken lied.
So royce said..he won't let go of anymore submissions till the REF..stops it. Which is exactly how it works today ever since.

sunfist you idiot.... jiu jitsu is a self defense oriented art.... designed for someone smaller in mass to defeat a larger opponent.... in a street fight.... the fight will go to the ground.... but do you know what to do once you get there? go learn something before you talk you ignorant fuck.... take me to the ground in a fight and be sure to have 2 broken elbows, shoulders, arms when you wake up after i choke you out.... me on my back is like askin for trouble....

Without the Japanese there is no jujutsu period.

Dont worry these bandwagon hoppers jump on anything thats "cool" today lol. BJJ is nothing more then Judo newaza and its historically true. Maeda sensei only studied Judo n Sumo then taught the gracies. Jujutsu was just a generic name for all japanese grappling like how Kung fu is generic for CMA's but it was really kodokan Judo that was taught. Gracie jujutsu isnt the best, they just market there BS well. Lets not forget helio and Royce lost to Judo Champions too. lol

No he didnt he lost to GSP twice (considerd the best in that weight devision and one of the top 3 p4p fighters) & dennis hallman twice when there was 2 weight classes over 200lbs & under 200lbs.

Instead of arguing about who created what, why don't you acknowledge the fact that almost all grappling styles utilize similar techniques with some variations because that is what works! Every style is changed and modified from another and this is a good thing! We should not want to be pinned down by the dogma and tradition that has crippled other martial arts.

As for the statement by SHKOIACH, yes there are no GRACIES competing the UFC because the rules don't favor the grappler. If you reinstat the no time limit/stand up rule, the striker doesn't have the option to wait it out but continue.

the reason is that people can withstand punches kicks knee and elbow strikes and they an resist chokes all if well trained, but no amount of training can stop the pain much less everything else if you get a finger to the eyes or a hit to the groin u cant toughen up your balls or eyes
and sometimes thats all you can do to get out of certain situations

A guy on top of you in mount has much better position to rip your eyeballs out of your skull than if you are underneath him. Who is to say that just cause someone is using jiu jitsu in a street fight they can't use those same dirty tactics?
So while you are reaching up trying to get to the eyes the guy on top could have free range on your face and then armbar your stretched out arms. Lets see you use your mad street fighting skills with broken arms.

When I am in a fight,there is no way I am think (hit in the balls squeez them!) Groin shots are NOT the fight stopper you think
they are. In the time it takes to guess where my balls are inside my pants,I cold snap your arm,or choke you out,when your a good grappler,you change position to fast,Do not try to sum up a Art as complex as Gracie Jiu jitsu by saying HIT TO DA BAWLZ!!. Same with eyes,the eyes are a small target to hit,and I doubt the guy will be still long enough to get hooked.

My point was,the chance of you getting hit in the balls is low,especialy if Im moving and shifting around,or Sink a submission while you try to aim at them. No art will protect you from groin shots,I meen with your logic why even bother learning any art,since there could be a chance somone has a gun,as well as hit you in the nuts. The gracies developed and refined there jujutsu by using the japanese techniques that were tested in trial and error combat. The gracie and russian sambo got lucky by building on a very old style while the japanese built it from stratch....dont forget who lost to JUDO the successor to old jujutsu and the mother of gracie jujutsu. =]

cause when it comes to blades, broken bottles, pipes, concrete, multiple (3) fighters and all that, ive seen tkd, karate, muay thai, japanese jujitsu and (in one only one RARE case) capoiera work....not so with gracie/brazilian jujitsu and 'mma'
