  • everyone looks terrified of him...

  • What was he doing when he was going like "real" and "not so real"? Also, why was he coloring in those pictures?

  • That 2nd Boy at 2:32 had a striking mature "Wise beyond his years" intensity to him.

  • "The biggest trap people fall into in these kinds of movies is they go to far."

    Cut to Jar Jar.

  • I cry when Lucas says that Jar Jar is the key to the whole movie

  • Obi-Wan Kenobi and Qui-Gon Gin (Jinn) should have been combined to make a whole new character, called Obi-Wan Kenobi.

  • "Jar-Jar is the key to all this."

    I died XD

  • I think Naboo (not the planet) said it best in the video "The Mighty Boosh- Naboo- I'm gonna have to turn my back on you"

    =P

  • It was either Haley Joel Osmant (The Sixth Sense) or Jake Lloyd for Anakin Skywalker. They chose Lloyd because he would speed up filming (the original went months over-shooting) while Osmant needed many takes to pronounce words Lucas wanted a certain way. A referance to Lucasfilm's second biggest turd caps this video off well.

  • The Phantom Menace...is actually a decent film. However, George is a bloody dull director, and if it weren't for the overly enthusiastic efforts of Fisher, Hamill, Ford and Cushing - the original 1977 SW would have been awful.

On TPM, George gave himself the terrible task of trying to direct slap-stick comedy and...kids. Instead of doing the right thing and hire an experienced director, he decided to save a bit of cash and did it himself. A good director would have even changed the dialogue.

  • LOL Jake Lloyd has about 5 different agents working for him and his family did they all manage to pull there strings on Lucas...joke.

  • I like the candid moment between Steven and George.

  • I thought the second kid was the best, just required a little more emotion.

  • Jar Jar is the key to all of this. He's the most powerful being in the universe. He's also the most important. I should just make him the central focus of all these movies. I should just make a whole trilogy about HIS backstory. There's a lot of interesting stuff there. It's bold. It poetry... It rhymes every stanza. This is gonna be great. This is gonna be great. This is gonna be great. This is gonna be great. This is gonna be great.

  • It's so dense.

  • star wars 1 was not terrible!

  • 5:00

  • second kid should of got the role

  • All I have to say is that..... Jar Jar is a key to all this.

  • This whole thing makes me mad all over again....

  • 0:45 really says it all.

"Jesus Christ, he's absolutely lost it."

  • >jar jar

    >the key

    >to all this mess

  • I enjoy the part where they're all dissing the second kid who "hit the beats", i.e. did what actors are supposed to do and what Natalie Portman was actively doing, and complimenting Jake Lloyd for being less polished.

  • This is like a Ricky Gervais show.

    So, so awkward.

  • @McKenziePictures What DVD can you find a documentary about the making of Star Wars Episode 1??

    Hmm...

It can't be on the DVD for Star Wars Episode 1. That would make too much sense.

I think you can find it on the DVD for the 1930s King Kong film, but I may be wrong about that.

If only the documentary for Star Wars Episode 1 was on the Star Wars Episode 1 DVD set. Than this question would be so much easier to answer for you.

  • What DVD is this documentary from? I would like to purchase it.

  • looks like Lucas is surrounded by 'yes' men... i think i see the problem.

  • Look at the look that guy gives at :45 sec. You know he's thinking 'what the fuck?" but he's too chickenshit like all the other yes men to speak up. I got banned from the official site for stating what is true. That Luca$ blew it big time by surrounding himself with 'yes men'. Episode 2 should've been the first of these prequels, He should've kept Darth Maul for all 3 films and have Anakin kill him to replace him in the 3rd. Jar Jar was garbage.

  • George had it right when he referenced More American Graffiti admitting he made a mistake. And he clearly said right at the end that while sitting and reviewing one of the rough cuts of TPM he may have gone to far in a few places. Makes u wonder what parts bothered him the most at the moment when he said that and did he attempt to address those during later editing and did we see those same problems he saw at the time in the final release.

  • if you want some pizza rolls send me a message and i'll send you some in the mail

  • @TheCritRocket: I want some pizza rolls! Hey did you notice the talking pizza roll during the middle of the film? That was scary man!

  • cute vs evil

  • Jake swences up his face when he asks Natalie if she's an angel! That's kinda cute

  • This is painful to watch.

  • Lucas seems like a childlike retard based on this and recent... Statements.

  • also why does everyone around lucas tell him what a great movie it will be before seeing the script or any production of it...these people are more to blame than lucas honestly.. they are enabling him

  • this makes me sad.. all lucas did in these 3 prequels was try to have a pissing contest with who could make the most computer effects.. the original 3 were about real characters and thats why you cared.. i wish i had never had to watch these 3 movies... they are horrible and lucas seems to be senile

  • The bit about the kid was just amazing and very eye opening. George says who he likes. And then the rest of these trained and supposedly smart people just waffle the same shite. Jake lloyed was fine in Jingle All the Way, but he was one of the major problems in Phantom Menace. So George you made a sucky decision and the rest of these idiots should be ashamed of how limp they are.

  • @Pentdad - it was all jakes fault that the director made such a shitty movie. yep. allllllll his fault.

NO YOU'RE FUCKING STUPID, THAT'S NOT THE ONLY REASON WHY THE MOVIE WAS BAD.

  • @1androo2 calm down dude, the main problem wasn't Jake Lloyd, it was too much CGI crap. Us young people who have played video games think its opbvious and fake. But like my old Man, Lucas and other old Men directors still think it looks awesome. CGI when used all the time sucks a massive brown turd.

  • George, everything you say and do makes me cringe lol man you are terrible. Giving you star wars, money and control of a movie is like giving GW Bush the title president, shit!.

  • So much potential wasted by a businessman surrounded by little people too scared to question him. Oh what could have been...

  • when this came out i was 8 i saw it fully at the movies and i fucking hated it! and ive only seen bits and pieces of it since and now that i "understand" the plot i hate it even more

  • 18 people liked the phantom menace

  • george reaches out for sympathy alot. 'i may have went too far' 'you can destroy these things you know' etc all the while waiting to hear a comforting voice reminding him itll be 'great'. and if you disagree with him, you end up dead behind the studio. lucas, you made 3 new star wars movies, the majority of people HATE them with a passion and pretend they never existed at all. you failed lucas.....you failed.

  • I don't know about anyone else but episode one was the best movie of my life. And George Lucas was genius!

  • Thats what happens if there is nobody around who dares to question the decisions of the moviemaking creatively Like in the first 3 movies. Lucas having total control is a hideous desaster that maybe looks and sounds like star wars but its not

  • George Lucas " JAR JAR IS THE KEY TO ALL THIS"

    WHAT!

  • "You can destroy these things you know." .... Yeah..

  • jar jars the key to all this hmm

  • see, even Lucas knows he failed

  • Ok I don't know why but when I found out Jarjar was a blackguy I fucking lost it.

Maybe I'm a horrible person but I'm still laughing

  • "Hopefully it will work..."

    That's confidence right there.

  • @LaughingUltros Well yeah, but you see, he knows it's going to work because it's impossible and.. -wait, WHAT?

  • The 2ns kid was sooooo much better than Jake Lloyd!!!

  • @tippytop7 yea I know Jake is perhaps the worst kid actor I've ever seen in a movie

  • /watch?v=FxKtZmQgxrI

  • No doubt about it. Everything you need to know about why the prequels were shit is in this video. Just take three examples, 1- Equating Anakin randomly pushing buttons with Luke using all his flying skill to take out the Death Star, 2- Spielberg and Lucas verbally sucking each other's dick, and 3 - "Jar Jar is the key to all this".

  • Spielberg: Thats gonna be great!

    Lucas: Thats gonna be great!

    Spielberg: Thats gonna be great!

    Lucas: Thats gonna be great!

    Spielberg: OK, please shut up!

  • omgosh they should've picked the blonde kid!!!!!! FFFFFFFF

  • Wow, this video speaks for itself. It was doomed from the start. Everyone were just a bunch of yes-men, and Why was Loyd chosen over the first two kids? They were vastly superior to Loyd! And I Lol'd at Jar Jar being the key to all this.

  • @JDTR1900 Kid #2 was completely unnatural. He read his lines well but he was obviously acting, and acting shouldn't be obvious.

  • @Powderwombat I have to agree but still that's what rehearsing is for. Casting children in important roles is tough and Anakin Skywalker is famous for being one of the most annoying child characters in movies. Ironically Natalie Portman was in one of the greatest characters played by a child Matilda in "Leon: The Professional" so sometimes it's a gamble.

  • Part of me wishes CGI had never come so far, that way Lucas would have left the Original trilogy alone, and never even thought about doing a prequel trilogy. Also "Jar Jar is the key to all this"?? WTF you smokin man?!

  • Kid actor #2 was really good. But it was a mistake to start this trilogy with Anakin at age 8. If they had made him 12 or 13, you could just maybe believe that he falls in love with Natalie Portman. And you could have introduced a complex character with thoughts and feelings of his own, rather than a little boy who looks like he is confused during most of the movie.

  • "You can destroy these things you know, it is possible"

  • Death to George lucas!! He made Yoda, this charismatic creature into a crazy, dumb, depressed emo, who never laughs of anything, just mope, and complain. Poor Yoda, did so well as a puppet, few years later totally destroyed!

  • Fucking asshole. At his old age he forgot how to make a film. Fuck that white nigger.

  • The BTS footage shows that Lucas was not intentionally trying to ruin Star Wars, in fact if you notice in this video his failures haunt him and I bet the reason he did all three prequels himself is that he was afraid to hand them off. He did the best he could and everyone goes with what he says unquestioningly.

  • @djsazquatch

I agree, I think he wanted them to be great films, but I also thin know he is to afraid to admit that he failed, I hope the rights to star wars go into good hands after Lucas is gone, it'd be a shame not to let star wars die just because there's a fear of another 3 bad movies, there are a lot of really talented directors out there, as long as people like Michael Bay dont make them.

  • The underlying story of "A New Hope" was based on ancient hero-journey plot formula, (i.e. Joseph Campbell's "Hero Journey") what the *&$% was "Phantom Menace" based on?

  • @hesbatting1000

Phantom Menace was based on selling merchandise, not telling a story.

  • @hesbatting1000

    Muppets in Space?

  • @Vorgoth911 Muppets from Space was a better made movie than Phantom Menace!

  • wow, lucas is a dumbass!

  • I think the second kid they auditioned was much than the kid they actually used

  • Lucas looks like he is bored, and everyone else are emotionally molested.

    =\

and then he re-re-remakes originals with cgi.

good thing I was never StarWars fan or I would rage :D

  • Corooskant 7:30 lol

  • haha.....$50,000

  • @CommentaryX By 'real' he is referring to using an actual set or person in the scene, by 'not so real' he means that it will be done using CGI. So Jar Jar Binks is 'not so real' while Natalie Portman is 'real'.

  • signing jake lloyd was a major screw-up. I liked the second kid that auditioned. He seemed to hit it out of the park for me.

  • So they picked Jake Lloyd because he wasn't any good?? Nice work, there.

  • No...I can't watch it! It's too excruciating, when Haley Joel Osment starts delivering that stilted dialogue, and you can just feel the horror creeping into the minds of the crew as they watch this trainwreck pull out of the station and gather steam in slow motion...and maybe, I just hope, some of them are thinking to themselves, "Is it too late? Should I say something to George?" But then we all know how it played out from there....

  • i just breaks my heart watching this.. all the actors, the producers, and everyone involved is laughing and smiling, everyone is so thrilled and excited to start working on the first of a brand new trilogy of star wars. The producer is saying how it's going to be a great fun movie, George is confident in Jar Jar saying he is going to be the key to all of this... and then the film is released... and the rest of history...

  • @chuggyman1 well said...it shows how it all went pair shaped. Its very hard to watch, now that we know how it all turned out. I remember watching ep 1 for the first time. The minute the trade federation guys spoke at the start of the movie, the one thought that aptly entered into my mind at that moment was..."I have a bad feeling about this".If u ask me, Uncle George should have just produced the movies, and let the guy He's showing the battle droids to direct them instead!

  • You know, they could have just replaced CG Jar Jar with that black dude and it would have been fifty times better.

  • I think . . . . that if the film . . . started out when the ship arrived at tatooine, and relegated all the story before then to the opening text crawl . . . then it wiould have been better

also, it would have saved teh jedi reveal for a better moment

  • I remember seeing this years ago, and thinking the kid before Jake Lloyd would have been a ton better. He even sort of looks like Luke

  • Comment removed

  • @CabinetSquirrel

but JL was a beter actor, though I must admit he didn't look anything like Luke & neither did HC.

  • It would have been a lot better if Jar Jar was just the black guy wearing the Jar Jar costume in the movie.

  • that guy at 00:44 looks like the Dark Overlord from Howard the Duck

  • The movie would have been SOOOO much better if jarjar was a black guy with a jarjar helmet on.

  • I wonder how much of the original 3 had feedback from other producers and such.

It seems here that they're all afraid to tell George what they really think about his ideas. They all just nod their heads and say "yep."

  • @peeeesh That's the problem. Everyone working on it were just yesmen.

  • @peeeesh I can't really blame them though. They want to keep their jobs after all.

  • ooooooh shit... It was DOOMED from the beginning.

  • FEAR THE SPICE PIRATES

  • You know the first two kids were 10X better than Loyd? Watching this really pisses me off.

  • No George, It DIDN'T work because it was impossible.

  • Note to film makers: NEVER GIVE GEORGE LUCAS A FUCKING HIGHLIGHTER.

  • Natalie is so fuckable in this

  • The Beginning is the best thing out of all Prequel DVDs.

I agree that the trilogy turned out terrible for the most part but the worst thing about this video are Lloyd´s realtives who are sooo "proud" of him.

Could someone please photoshop dollar signs on their eyes please ?

  • This makes me cry, and I'm a full grown man.

  • Again, it's like poetry, sort of; they rhyme.

  • What's great about all of this is the palpable anxiety in their bodies and fear on everyone's faces surrounding George Lucas. They're all too afraid to make suggestions or speak their minds when they see something wrong and it's obvious see they something wrong with this movie too - they're a bunch of professionals! All the can do is watch the train derail, turn over and burst into flames as the passengers crawl out burning cursing the name of Jar-Jar Binks....

  • Honestly, I don't know why the first 3 (the most recently made) Star Wars films got such a bad rap. Are they really that bad? I grew up watching 4 through 6 as a kid, loving those, but I still love the newer ones. Granted, Hayden Christiansen's acting in Attack of the Clones is nothing short of awful, but what am I missing here?

  • @UltimateImperium - "........the first 3 (the most recently made) Star Wars films..... Are they really that bad?"

    Yep.

  • @guyactor Exactly my point...couldn't explain why.

  • Now it makes sense why Jar-Jar says 'meesa' and 'yousa'

    RacistLucas

  • It's funny because it's like poetry, but shitty poetry.

  • It's funny because all this footage is from before any of the prequels were actually made, so everyone around him is going with everything he says cause they think he's a genius.

  • This is fascinating, is there a longer version of this on the DVD? It's great learning from how disasters are created. I think it comes with way too much ego and confidence. So sad...

  • @DarkNessBear There is actually. I can't remember how long, but this is over half of the featurette and in linear order. Whoever made this featurette clearly let the footage speak for itself. I just trimmed the fat, but everything that's there is the real deal. Disaster unfolding.

  • @DarkNessBear yes, the documentary is more than an hour long

  • "The auteur theory of film actually is very true, if you know directors, because they are very much like their movies."

    NO.

    NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

  • tldw

  • The Prequels suck dick and even Lucas himself knew it as you can see at the end of this video. That pretty much sums his feelings on all three of those turds!!

  • It really seems as if George Lucas knew this was bad at the end.

  • Jar Jar is black? o_O

  • Lloyd should have been let go after he flubbed his lines.

  • DID GEORGE LUCAS CALL DROIDS "ROBOTS"

  • who's fucking with my film series

  • Are you sure this isn't a Terrible Mistake?

  • 50,000 ?

    he should have been executed.

  • so basically star wars is fucked because George Lucas was given highlighters.

  • "jarjar is a key to all this." <you could have just used that 2 sec soundbite.

  • I lol'd so hard

when I saw a black man in a jarjar costume at the dinner table

  • Best moment with the "new" trilogy was Darth Maul duel of fates..

  • @astroblackable People are upset about it because the original trilogy is a part of their childhoods, it's very special to them and they feel betrayed by someone they love. I don't even like Star Wars but I understand it's importance. Saying 'it's just a movie' is bullshit. Movies are an artform and they touch people and are important to people, if you can't understand that go back to watching Michael Bay films.

  • @riseofthejellyfish So what makes you think the 2nd trilogy wasn't part of another generations childhood?Your on the internet bitching about a set of movies calling it art and shit to make yourself feel better about its importance.Of course film is art but that doesn't mean every fucking one has to be up to your bullshit-purist standards of what a movie should be.At the end of the day a movie is a fucking movie no matter how moving or shitty.

  • @astroblackable And at the end of the day, you're still black, cool story bro!

  • @riseofthejellyfish Oh and for the record I think all of them were awesome so you can waste your time whimpering over something you hate so much while others enjoy it. :) You mad bro? You sad brah? yeah i think you are...

  • @astroblackable OK, go back and read what I said, I don't hate the Star Wars prequels, I was just explaining to you why some people do. How wonderful for you that you happen to love all the Star Wars film, and actually it is fine for movies to just be movies and nothing special. But the original Star Wars wasn't just beloved it was groundbreaking cinema, and it changed movies forever and it also changed culture, that was some serious shit. Sometimes movies aren't just movies.

  • @astroblackable The new Star Wars film are very different, as shown in this funny video, Lucas is no longer the cool kid shaking things up, he's a fat, rich old man drinking coffee and making films no one wanted to see, there's no spark anymore he's just saying shit and because he's so established nobody is brave enough to challenge his ideas. I love cinema, and clearly you don't, that's fine, but it seems pretty obvious why fans hate these prequels.

  • @riseofthejellyfish I love how you were the one that identified film as an art first and yet your still ardently forceful about your opinion towards the films. Although I can't say I loved the prequels , as a fan of the Star Wars serious by itself I was satisfied and it was enough to compel me to cherish the universe and lore itself aside from the films. Lucas created an entirely persistent world/universe that transcended film itself and I think that's pretty credible in itself and could

  • @riseofthejellyfish not have been done with just 3 films during one generation fanbase. Oh and I don't really see how I don't love cinema because of my statements...even though your completely oblivious to my background. But oh wait my background is trivial to the argument :L

  • @astroblackable Ah you just sort of gave the impression that you think movies are just movies, like they're just entertainment and so aren't important. If that's not what you meant to say then not to worry. My point is, It's understandable that people are pissed at these movies. If you like them yourself then great, but the comment I originally replied to you were asking why fans get so bitchy about the prequels, well I'm saying it's fairly understandable.

  • @astroblackable And while Lucas did create a rich mythology in the original trilogy, the reason why it worked is because your imagination filled in the blanks, there was a sense of mystery and myth to the whole thing, where past events were just hinted at. That's what made it feel deep, finding out that the force comes from microorganisms, or that Darth Vader was a whiney jerk, spoiled the mythology for a lot of fans, and that's why they're pissed.

  • 8:30 ....you called it, George. You called it.

  • @bryund too bad he was talking about how much money it would make, not whether or not it was good...

  • The kid. The kid at 2:30. WHY DIDN'T YOU CAST THAT ONE, JORGE? That kid nailed that line.

  • @ElFlippage thats what i was thinking....if i was the director i would have ended it right when the kid who ended up getting the spot messed up on the line and give it to the blonde kid.

  • Shit i lied, 1:05 is why the prequels sucked...

  • Let me simplify why the prequels stunk! When George Lucas shot the original Star Wars in the late 70s and 80s he was not fully in control, he had someone who actually wrote, and took care of each department of the film (heck Irvin Kershner directed Empire Strikes Back). What George is good at is creating the universe, all the weapons, worlds, and creatures, the man has vision. What he lacks is writing and story creation; when he got full control, no one would dared to appose him, look what haps

  • @Reclaimer1547 apparently he wanted someone else to direct it, but they said "no you should do it george" whoops!

  • First kid: annoying little twit. Second kid: too perfect, corn-fed, Aryan. Third kid: perfect.

  • "What is it with Ricks?"

  • Are we sure this isn't a big mistake?

Ewan Macgregor showing more foresight and asking the question Lucas and Company should have asked from the outset.

  • Comment removed

  • the phantom menace was awesome i dont know why people got to hate on it.

  • Comment removed

  • If only that truck with the fucking Jar Jar prototype wrapped itself around a fucking tree......

  • Just look at all the "yes men" around him, how scared they look at 0:35 when Lucas is making a decision

That's where he went wrong, getting rid of people that would challenge him and replacing them with yes men that only cared about making their pay check. Lucas used story to extensively expand and show off CGI and special effects like I little kid saying to the world "I can do this better than you!"

  • Comment removed

  • I thought that the phantom menace was a good movie but thats just my opinion. anakin was annoying and darth mual should have had more lines the pod race was allright but kinda boring

  • @dalekside97 i thought it was better having Darth Maul have fewer lines, but Jar Jar was a waste of a character.

  • @tappedridgeline Darth Maul couldve been a silent character, to be honest. he didnt need to say anything, but he shouldve had more of a backstory, or ANY backstory, to explain his grudge against the Jedi. just something other than "at last, we will reveal ourselves to the Jedi. At last, we will have our revenge."

  • @obesehairydog im sure thats what happened all those years ago. lucas' orginally wanted luke to have a robot face, 3-CPO to talk like a 1950s car salesman and vader to be some sort of ghost that wandered the desert.

  • yeah, lets cast the kid that fucked up the most. good job

  • i liked the second anakin's performance

  • "I may have gone too far in a few places"

    Gosh you think?

  • George, that's because More American Graffiti was just unnecessary and not as good as the first one.

  • Don't tell me that they're attacking because of such and such, SHOW ME. Don't tell me you love her, SHOW ME YOU LOVE HER. Don't tell us that saving him is crucial to the empire, SAVE HIM AND LET US SEE HOW IT'S CRUCIAL.
