@itsmegp46 built better than the american companies, though. the US has few actual "import" cars, but many foreign cars made here. honda makes a much tighter ride that most people.
@itsmegp46 I love the Bonnevilles. All body styles. The last ones they made were a bit odd looking but I absolutely loved them. I practically grew up in a '92 Bonneville SE. I believe it's still running today. Only minor transmission work. I wish they still made Pontiac :( it was my favorite division of GM!
my 1977 mercury cougar has 475,381.9 miles on it original motor and transmission. automatic transmission. i used to change the oil every 10,000 miles and give it a tune-up myself every 3-5 months. if you go to my channel you can see some videos of it running, she purrs like a kitten. until i took the motor apart, i'm doing some performance upgrades. otherwise every single part excluding charging, cooling, and ignition is original.
UPDATE: I sold my car 8-13-2009 with 303K miles! I got more than half of what I paid for it, so I certainly got my money's worth out of it, having it for 3-1/2 years and only paying $600! :-)
the thing about hondas is that they are not 100% foreign if you look at the statistics last time i saw they were around 75% american but as far as electronics on the car its probably more on the foreign side i have a 98 accord with 136k on it and that baby still hauls ass the v-tech is an amazing motor and u should still get your 600 back from buying the car when u sell it
My 2002 Accord just hit 250,000 yesterday. I have only changed the alternator, two wheel bearings, one transmission flush, and oil changes every 10-15,000 miles (full synthetic Castrol). I really need to do the timing belt and water pump before its too late. Has anyone done this? If so, what is involved?
It is involved, but not as difficult as some cars. You will need an impact wrench to remove the 19mm bolt that holds the crankshaft pulley. Probably will need the hex insert tool for it too. Honda engines run counterclockwise, not clockwise, so you can't bump the starter with the wrench on the bolt, you'll just tighten it even further. Do the water pump too, while you're in there, and the cam & crank seals. Get a Haynes Manual, it will REALLY help you. Oh, and get out the old "swear jar" ;-).
Be careful too in that this is an interference engine. If you don't set the timing correctly on the belt the engine will destroy itself. Just turn the engine a few revolutions through by hand before starting it to ensure all the parts are moving in sync.
@ericambrosecoon One more thing because I went over my word limit for a comment :P
Replacing the timing belt/water pump just requires alot of time and patience. Google steps (with pictures) on how to do it so you don't go out of order and mess up.
Theres 2 Chevy Trucks and a 01 Chevy 3500 Van that have both hit over 1 million miles on the original Engines and one of the trucks had the original trans and the Van from what I hear also had the original trans, Almost any car can do this, it all depends on where most the milage came from, how well it was taken care of and how well it continues to be taken care of. I've had over 360k miles on each of my Chevy Engines and had a Ford F150 with 377k miles on the Original Engine and Trans
And that'd be the only way to claim that the engine was never rebuilt or replaced: changing the timing belt at scheduled intervals or due to other circumstances (such as a failed water pump if the pump is driven by the timing belt because, unless the belt is still relatively new and not damaged by the bad pump, you may as well change it while you're there).
If the belt breaks, you have to rebuild the upper half of the engine unless it's non-interference; bent valves and damaged pistons.
I'm sure it happens just like, as I said, some foreign cars are junkboxes and have tons of problems, some Hondas are crap, but I think that for the most part people don't think of American-made cars as being known for their longevity. Mercedes, Toyota, Honda, are well known for their longevity, but when you hafta replace the tranny on your Taurus, Blazer, or Caravan every 55000 miles, it gets kind of ridiculous, or the head gasket on your new lincoln town car.

Yes, of course. Check the first letter of the VIN#. If it's a 'J' then it was made in Japan, if it's a '1' then it was made in America.

Newsflash, your Honda Accord is an American made car. Accords have been designed, engineered and built in the USA since the early 1980's.

It was changed by the original owner at 60K, 105K (because water pump died), 190K, and by me at 273K.
