  • it isnt very important but they tell you not to use a dull scraper is because traditional common shoji doors are not sanded or lacquered simply stained (they use a soft wood tree so as to lessen roughness on people when they are touched instead of sanding the wood) so inturn you are removing the stained wood when you scrape ;) good luck

  • I wonder why a more durable 21st century material isn't used. For example there's some wonderful light weight opaque perspex that would be easy to clean and last a very long time. Paper screens was probably once high tech but why keep on doing it?

  • I don't live in Japan and my hardware store does not sell rice paper do you have any other suggestions of where I might be able to buy it?

  • nice instruction to repair shoji windows...thank you.

  • working with glue and water instead of ironing will make all the tensioning for you ;)

  • See. Men do iron.

  • WOW. Thank you so much! :D

  • You sound like kipkay when you are behind the camera.

  • if it's so sensitive to heat, wouldn't the muggy summers make the shoji paper fall off?

  • @nwatkins18 warm water is enough to remove old glue. Moisture in the air is not enough but if you had left your screens exposed to rain by leaving the glass door open then yes you may have some problems with the paper. I replaced the traditional style paper with a synthetic type that is stronger and resistant to moisture/wetness but has the same filtering characteristics.

  • @toddatron what's the synthetic material you used as replacement called? and where do i buy it? tnx!

  • cute girl :) makes the job go a litle nicer hey

  • cool video ....

  • コオブアレヨウインジャパンイヨウアレエンィ?/cool but why are you in japan if you are english?

  • @ichigo9995303 Josh? Well cause .....lets just say at 40 I needed a change of scenery.... That's as plain as I can put it.

  • @toddatron ah i see and how do u know my name?

  • @ichigo9995303 Cause you said it on your vid:P

  • @toddatron haha u watched my vids?cool thx can u rate them thumbs up plz?

  • Reminds me of the shoji screens on shogun, the tv series

  • MAN i wanna live there I like their houses and your vids thanks!

  • Looks like you build a nice house , and with you video you show us

how to make ones too :-)

Sieht aus als baust du dir da ein echt tolles Haus , und mit diesem video

zeigst du uns wie wir das auch können.

  • hehe, love all the "now it says don't do this but I'm going to". gaijin style! I'll do what the hell I want! :)

  • Is Expensive buy a house like that? In dollars?

    A little house, I dont want a palace :)

  • cool man, i bet you could get a renovation/building job in japan if you wanted, or maybe you already do i dunno.

  • I also love the way you did precisely what you were told not to do 3x and it turns out perfect.

  • I really love ur new videos , but I always wonder, how come the houses in Japan and some countries like USA, r built with wood ? how come they don't fall down due to the heavy furniture?

  • 100 vids!

Drunk people comming over!! Best believe it!! LOL

  • Great video! So, lemme ask you this. Being that Japan is so environmentally conscious, what do you do with the bucket of water when you're done wiping the wood? Do you have to dump it in a specific place, just down the drain, or do you dump it in the street? Just curious.

  • Agreed, these videos are great, Just wish i could stay in Japan for a while. I love there way life.

  • Looks like you did a pretty good job there.

  • Pretty cool. I like the sweeping ending!!! LOL!!

  • You da man!

  • Fascinating.

  • Going to try the glue on method next?

  • very cool.. It's very simple to make a new soji I saw, was it cheap to? or wasn't it.

    Thank you for posting.

I've also a question for you. Isn't it posiple for the new windows to have modern shoji. or the old soji.?

because it is really nice and very japanese.

    many greetz gieltjejnssen.

  • Ohh yeah finaly the uppdate on your house project :D

  • nice job toddatron do the screens come in just white or have they got ones with patterns on?

  • I like your videos toddatron keep making them. :D

  • Nice work, but since you did everything they said NOT to: used scraper, used water, steamed....we were amazed at how well this turned out! Kudos! :)

  • haha wax on, wax off...nice jog guys, well done : )

So which drunk gaigin broke it, I don't remember doing it. Sorry if it was me ; P

  • Nice work....

Why didn't you paint the wooden frame with a protective paint?

  • the best thing to do to get rid of glued on residue on anything is a little bit of petrol on a cloth, it works real good

  • Cool DIY Nihon style. nice work. keep the peace and steam iron with you

  • So did that Shouji door just torn by a drunk person who came over or by an electric that was pulled out from the wall?....LOL

How many more screens did you have to replace after those two?

Isn't there a more permanent/long lasting solution than replacing the shouji screen every year or so?

  • It's a hoot to see you retain your American "male" way of doing things by doing what the instructions tell you not to do. haha! Love it!

  • awe dam iv been waiting for another one of ur house videos in a while i love seen what u do to ur house keep them coming and by the way i love what u did to u bathroom looks great.

  • I've always wonder about how would you replace and or would you have to get a new shoji door. But now I know thanks! Cheers!

  • Well this looked like fun. I had fun to yesterday. The morons that put in are new insalation moved a heavy box on to an unstable section of sheetrock, few months later a large section of sheetrock gave way right were the outer hallway isof my house outside. It was a mess! Luckly my Uncle is a man of many talents as he was able to fix the hole. This was no small hole either at least the size or so of the shoji screens. I then spent the rest of the day cleaning.

  • cool keep up the vids do any japanese just skip the screne to have a western looking window

  • @brollicon Yes they do and some day we will have new windows etc. But I kept the traditional look in that room. Some new houses have modern sliding glass doors and sash windows and no shoji or a combination of the two like us.

  • Cool vid, thanks for sharing!
