it isnt very important but they tell you not to use a dull scraper is because traditional common shoji doors are not sanded or lacquered simply stained (they use a soft wood tree so as to lessen roughness on people when they are touched instead of sanding the wood) so inturn you are removing the stained wood when you scrape ;) good luck
I wonder why a more durable 21st century material isn't used. For example there's some wonderful light weight opaque perspex that would be easy to clean and last a very long time. Paper screens was probably once high tech but why keep on doing it?
@nwatkins18 warm water is enough to remove old glue. Moisture in the air is not enough but if you had left your screens exposed to rain by leaving the glass door open then yes you may have some problems with the paper. I replaced the traditional style paper with a synthetic type that is stronger and resistant to moisture/wetness but has the same filtering characteristics.
I really love ur new videos , but I always wonder, how come the houses in Japan and some countries like USA, r built with wood ? how come they don't fall down due to the heavy furniture?
Great video! So, lemme ask you this. Being that Japan is so environmentally conscious, what do you do with the bucket of water when you're done wiping the wood? Do you have to dump it in a specific place, just down the drain, or do you dump it in the street? Just curious.
awe dam iv been waiting for another one of ur house videos in a while i love seen what u do to ur house keep them coming and by the way i love what u did to u bathroom looks great.
Well this looked like fun. I had fun to yesterday. The morons that put in are new insalation moved a heavy box on to an unstable section of sheetrock, few months later a large section of sheetrock gave way right were the outer hallway isof my house outside. It was a mess! Luckly my Uncle is a man of many talents as he was able to fix the hole. This was no small hole either at least the size or so of the shoji screens. I then spent the rest of the day cleaning.
@brollicon Yes they do and some day we will have new windows etc. But I kept the traditional look in that room. Some new houses have modern sliding glass doors and sash windows and no shoji or a combination of the two like us.

if it's so sensitive to heat, wouldn't the muggy summers make the shoji paper fall off?

the best thing to do to get rid of glued on residue on anything is a little bit of petrol on a cloth, it works real good

So did that Shouji door just torn by a drunk person who came over or by an electric that was pulled out from the wall?....LOL
How many more screens did you have to replace after those two?
Isn't there a more permanent/long lasting solution than replacing the shouji screen every year or so?

It's a hoot to see you retain your American "male" way of doing things by doing what the instructions tell you not to do. haha! Love it!
