    bigger than brothers............

  • @paranoidgoldfish because thats the way they made the song

  • @paranoidgoldfish to add a subtle mystique and to understate the guitar riff in the context of the song as a whole.

  • great lyrics, manchester does churn out great wordsmiths.

    ad,manchester

  • Too bad he's a tosser and RACIST.

"You can't help but feel that the Chinese are a subspecies." - Morrissey

  • @ChicagoX Morrissey is no racist. He just referred to them as 'subspecies' because they mistreat animals.

  • my dick is bigger than others =], her tits are bigger than others =], I think bigger than others. Thumb me down, but I know I'm bigger than others.

  • genius pop tune

  • from the ice age to the dole age there is but one concern

  • I wonder when this originally came out on vinyl how many people stopped their record player and checked the needle was clean when it fades in and out at the beginning

  • FUCK these guys were good!!

  • Some girls mothers are bigger than other girls mothers. SO great =)

  • I'm going with the stupid lyrics on this one. Make of it what you want. Inane lyrics aren't above or below Morrisey. You needing to read into them is all part of the program really. I'd put Dylan in the same boat or heck, maybe I'm just not smart enough to get it, right? Lyricists aren't working hard at creating puzzles for you sometimes they're just free associating and you've got yourself a nice puzzle.

  • I'm addicted t this song! no to mention the band!!!! No rehab is necessary! I'm completely peaceful regarding my illness!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :-))))) I am stll ill!!!!!

  • Said Gilbert to Sullivan as they crafted a tale of woe... "I say... some bands are bigger than others"

  • some dics are bigger than others

  • @circulodedanteX fucking idiot.

  • god the last minute is just pure magic.

  • Some Bass Players Are Bigger Than Others.....

    Andy Rourke!!!

  • Some men are bigger than others, too

  • Yep, but bigger men don't have neccessarily bigger bottoms than others.

  • genuis!!!

  • "Send me the pillow... the one that you

dream on... and I'll send you mine...."

    No such magnificent lyrics like

    this nowadays ....... :-(((((

  • The Smiths are bigger than others

  • as Anthony said to Cleopatra as he opened a crate of ale.Great accent, great lyrics

  • I love The Smiths

  • Im certainly shorter than some girls!

  • true

but not the point of this song

  • My favorite Smiths song. The comments on this page are pretty interesting, the different interpretations and insights all help add more depth to a tune you just knew meant something.

  • The jangling guitar is fantastic on this tune. Johnny Marr at his peak.

  • especially from 2:25 to the end. just magical!

  • Gotta love the lyrics.

  • Some girls are bigger than others...true. lol.

  • Its hard to believe Marr plays with Modest Mouse. Which is cool though!

  • Smiths era muito bom, pena que acabou =/

  • MARR IS LEGENDARY~~~~~!!!!!!!!!!

  • Some girls are bigger than others ..... I like like like this music

  • From the ice age to the dole age....true then, true now....

  • i hav,nt heard this for ages got it on a cd somewhere ,what a classic,,

  • Lyrically-the dumbest...musically-one of the best!!!

  • Can understand your comment but its a short message Mozza wants to put across in this song and he does it brilliantly, with his usually clever lyrics appearing take out some girls are bigger than others part and its still genius lyrics ... in my opinion :)

  • Lyrically the dumbest? Clearly you haven't even got the slightest insight in literature...

In a few lines he pinpoints the stupidity and weakness of humanity: major focus on sex & looks, that our 'intelligent' kind's big concern is the size of tits, even referring to the 60's parody 'Carry on Cleo' where Cleopatra rules the male world with just her body.

It's a brilliant satire on female power.

So really I would take back these words since Morrissey's lyrics seem to big for you.

  • A very thoughtful comment..., as I have always thought it is about girls' intelligence :) Well, your understanding is interesting though.

  • @Adriansh3r0

This song was inspired by Morrissey finding out that girls were different sizes on the *inside* It's a joke lyric, like many others.

  • Love it! Love it! Love it!

  • music developed in the eighties and stood still since then.

  • buy i do understand your point,,anyway i go to see morissey in a month here in finland,,dont think a smiths reunion will ever happy,,but ill be shouting for one at the morissey gig,,

  • Yeah, it's doubtful that they will ever reformed. The all kind of hate each other now. So if they did happen to reform (and shame themselves), it'd be no different to the Spice Girls reforming and it truly would be solely about the money. But I'd like to think of Morrissey as higher than that. He has been offered many millions in the past and refused, so I hope he keeps on doing so. They'll always be one of the greatest bands this country, or any country, has ever produced.

  • gah. "send me a pillow, the one that you dream on...and i'll send you mine!"

    gets me every time

  • the guitar sounds like magic

  • The smiths are amazing.

    Love this song.

  • this song is so true and so moving, and the simplicity of the lyrics make it even more powerful.

i loveeee the smiths.. i wish i'd been born 30 years earlier so i could see them all together haha.

    they are my inspiration <3

  • An amazing song. The Smiths are simply brilliant.

The lyrics are interesting in this track and the lead guitar is mind blowing all the way through. The intro grabs you straight away.

    Top rate music :-)

  • Oh Morrisey.. people love you cuz you're just a sad boy ,normal like the name of your band and soo incredible is your soul. particular

  • dont know if it would be good for a reunion. i mean it could just ruin the whole thing. its nice that they split leaving a great reputation i wouldnt want that ruined

  • Comment removed

  • actually, Morrisey said once he rather eat his own balls than getting back with the smiths.

  • Well so much for that, as he is a vegetarian

  • i think this song is genius. just learnt all the guitar n it shows how great marr is

  • was it hard to learn,,ive been picking up licks and riffs from it by ear but havent put it all together cos i think the album version is layered,ie difficult to do with one guitar..absolutely really catchy tune..really flowing.

  • This is probably one of the very few songs in which instruments have captured so many emotions and transferred it into music, which is so beautiful.

    The melody, the guitar-riff.

It possibly can't get any better than this

God, I love the Smiths so much.

  • by the time morrissey says cleopatra...thats when it hits me and whatever girl I'm trying to get over with in my head goes away, takes half the pain away. This song has greater meaning than the literal words. I feel his emotion even though I may not know the full interpretation of the song.

  • This music was such a part of my life. It holds the key to so much emotion. Death of a Disco Dancer will never be forgotten.

  • one of my all time favorite songs

  • delicious. sparkling guitars, gentle throbbing bass, and a cool arch funny delivery by Mozzer.

  • its really hypnotic...

  • What a beauty ... SHORT but unforgettable ... JUst like a good kiss by a beautiful stranger

  • Don't try to analyse it too deeply. There's plenty of subtle humour in Morrissey's lyrics

  • I think you should'nt 'think' so much. He just thinks that, Some girls are bigger than others!!! We still love you all the same! Fuck all that 'Freudian' shit

  • i think he's talking about how the majority of the public see very shallowly upon the world, with the most important factors and thoughts in their lives are that 'some girls are bigger than others' and this has happened throughout time, hence the 'from the ice age to the dole age'. also he brings this out in sarcasam with 'as anthony said to cleopatra' etc.

  • one of my fav. songs :)

  • what a Song, Love it sooo much. JM u are a true guitar hero, i also like Andy's bass.

  • the bass really helps to make this song, gives it a real warmth and gentleness

  • Andy's bass lines r so melodic n unique, u can hear it in every song. A true Bass legend.

  • yes - well i wonder is a great obvs example. handsome devil too springs to mind. what made the smiths SO unique and great was the disparate strands of genius, they all brought something to the Smiths, most obvsly Marr and Moz, but Joyce and Rourke too. they wrote themselves into music history..

  • well said. Wonderful woman, back to the old hous, rusholme ruffians, barbarism begins at home, heaven knows i'm misrabel now, & the list go on & on. They will be forever in r hearts as one of the great bands ever.

  • their songs were sad and funny in equal measure. where did Moz find those magical words and how did Marr manage to come up with so much sparkling, life affirming music. rusholme ruffians is such an atmosphereic song, you imagine yourself at the funfair.

  • I'm backing up every word u say. Wish we could get a reunion, but Mozza is 2 stubborn. I know Andy n Mike would love to reunite, cuz they said so.

Mozza we beg u, please before it will be 2 late. U guys can be megamillionairs form a few gigs around the world.

  • alas, their best has been. they shone brightly for a brief moment in the 80's (well 4 years), their star never waned they just disappeared (at the top). they were young, full of life and bristling with ideas - they left us with barely a duff track and that's the way it should remain. i'd love them to be mates again, but no music. perfection cannot be bettered.

  • i want a smiths reunion more than anything,,i mean for hells sake ,,deep purple are still gigging,,,mozz need a kick where the sun dont shine,,how can he deny us the seeing the wittiest sharpest band in history again,,..mozz do it now while you are still good looking.

  • Deep Purple probably need the money, while Mozz has lots of it so he's not desperate. It's all about the money.... However u r absolutely right, maybe we should start a Facebook profile for a Smiths reunion... No doubt he is still good looking, better than ever....

  • I think Morrissey is right not to reform The Smiths. They were a great band, and part of an era, but that era has gone, and I'd hate for them to reform and destroy the great legacy they have left. They are old now and that same spirit just isn't there anymore - it'd be no different to listening to a cover-band. It'd be sad. I feel sorry for those bands who are now reforming - it's pathetic and desperate. The Smiths are too good for that. Let them be, I say. Their time has gone.

  • i dont agree,,do you not think all the people like myself dont deserve a chance to see them live,,the original lineup, marr morissey rourke and joyce,,it can only be done in this life, cos there are no others,,they might be older but its the music people want and the original songs would be the same ,,fortysomething is not old,,im 37,,the difference is the world wants a smiths reunion ,,other bands just do it for the money,,i seen deep purple last year all in their sixties ,,they were great.

  • I hear where you're coming from. But the only proper way to see them live would be to make a time-machine and transport to the 80s - seeing them now would be fake; it wouldn't really be seeing The Smiths. Their passion, the soul behind the music, has gone. Morrissey has moved on from that; it'd be a flat/embarrassing rendition. It may well satisfy you if they reformed, but you wouldn't really be seeing 'the band' - it'd be like leftovers at the dinner table.

  • What an awesome track! Morrissey did borrow the "send me your pillow" line though.

  • who from?

  • the smiths

  • I love smiths

  • the send me your pillow line is one of the most beautiful lyrics ever

  • More cushion for the pushinG>

  • Uh my spleen hurts...

  • I think this song is just true and that's all, because some girls are bigger than others, and also their mothers

  • You're right. All these ideas about what else the song could mean are flattering, but wrong.

  • the song means girls are a joke and a waste of time and that he doesnt get them what so ever

  • its about their egos

  • People always say this song isn't meaningful - I bet it means something to Morrissey, and it definately means something personal to me.

  • I love this song so much, yet I wished the lyrics where different; more meaningful, deeper.

  • maybe he's saying that life and love are truly a joke

  • Mabye, yeah. I'd love to hear what inspired him and what his meaning is with this song

  • I think he's trying to state how "some girls are bigger than others". Many people go on to explain obesity further, i.e. greediness, poor diet, lazyness etc. While morrisey is putting it down to the fact that it just happens and perhaps the world shouldn't always be concerned about being thin e.g. size zero models.

  • Always loved Marrs guitar playing.

  • wow killer song

  • Most beautiful song!!

    But,I don't know the meaning of Dole-Age.

I'm a The Smith fan of Japan.

    Please teach someone.

    Which is it?

    1,sadness-Age

    2,destiny-Age

    3,loss of job-Age

  • Dole money is a name for unemployment (or "welfare") money. I'm thinking thats the meaning. That's just my opinion though.

  • fucking reagan thatcher years.

  • which i might add, were only a prelude to the shit we've just come through...

  • I am listen to this song now already for 20 years...and its still good.

  • Respect!

  • Word! One of those perfect pop songs, making shivers run down my spine...

  • the guitar lines layered on each other in the end part are just amazing...especially on a real stereo (not an mp3 on a computer). But it's still great either way. Always on of my favorites since I was 20 when it came out.

  • I always understood this song refers the power of the monarchy i.e. The Queen, a mother who is bigger than others, speaking in terms of authority.

  • Is this song about girls being fat, busty, or strong. I allways thought it was about him being beaten up by a girl for some reason lol

  • Cuando tuve un bajo este fue mi primer teme ;^) me encanta.

  • send me your pillow...

  • eheheeheh I love this song

  • This is such a good song

  • THE SMITHS RULE!

  • I'm opening a crate of ale right now! Great song.

  • heh girls allways find these lyrics cute, but dont like the title?!

  • no need for that jacques. ...Send mre the pillow... the one that you dream on

  • Sabio :)

  • I forgot this was my faviroute song of theirs, they did so many good ones!

  • The humour of The Smiths.

  • I wonder what this song is actually about.

  • tits

  • some bands are better than others...

  • the business lads

  • The guitaaaar...

  • I lol'd.

  • BRILLIANT!!

  • THE SMITHS ARE THE BEST

  • this sony is the best lol

  • SMITHS = excellent

  • incredible song: lyrics, riffs, singing...

  • every smiths' song has something sad deep inside, also songs like this that treat a generic theme has something wistful...i'm not sure if it's the real song that make me sad or morrissey voice...it's weird! what do yuo think about it?

  • my wife thought the lyrics were: Some girls are bigger than ovens!

  • Thats the funnies thing ive heard all week!

  • Thank you so much. You made me laugh!

  • My great grand mother thought he said "Some grills are too powerful for regular sliced pan".

  • fatal Guitar...

  • The guitar on this song is beyong amazing. I don't think there's a word in websters friggin dictionary to describe it. i second that! i'd love it if this were the last thing I heard before I die. I'd make my afterlife that much happier haha =)

  • i think i could die in peace listening this song ,

    the smiths forever.

  • tosi ihana biisi

  • THEM ... god my spelling is a JOKE!!!

  • I don't even know, if I'd like to see the reunite... I think at least MArr lost inspiration...just check out his solo work.... it'S VILE!!! Except of Electronic, which was in the early 90s...!!!

  • I love There Is a Light That Never Goes Out, but compared to this dizzling song, it sounds a bit too clean.

  • Awesome song!

  • MAGNIFICENT!

  • great song of history great guitar

  • from the iceage to the doleage there is but one concern

  • This track is from the album "The Queen Is Dead!"

  • Will they ever get reunited ?????

  • Morrissey said once that he rather eat his own balls than getting reunited with the smiths.
