I'm going with the stupid lyrics on this one. Make of it what you want. Inane lyrics aren't above or below Morrisey. You needing to read into them is all part of the program really. I'd put Dylan in the same boat or heck, maybe I'm just not smart enough to get it, right? Lyricists aren't working hard at creating puzzles for you sometimes they're just free associating and you've got yourself a nice puzzle.
I'm addicted t this song! no to mention the band!!!! No rehab is necessary! I'm completely peaceful regarding my illness!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :-))))) I am stll ill!!!!!
My favorite Smiths song. The comments on this page are pretty interesting, the different interpretations and insights all help add more depth to a tune you just knew meant something.
Can understand your comment but its a short message Mozza wants to put across in this song and he does it brilliantly, with his usually clever lyrics appearing take out some girls are bigger than others part and its still genius lyrics ... in my opinion :)
Lyrically the dumbest? Clearly you haven't even got the slightest insight in literature...
In a few lines he pinpoints the stupidity and weakness of humanity: major focus on sex & looks, that our 'intelligent' kind's big concern is the size of tits, even referring to the 60's parody 'Carry on Cleo' where Cleopatra rules the male world with just her body.
It's a brilliant satire on female power.
So really I would take back these words since Morrissey's lyrics seem to big for you.
buy i do understand your point,,anyway i go to see morissey in a month here in finland,,dont think a smiths reunion will ever happy,,but ill be shouting for one at the morissey gig,,
Yeah, it's doubtful that they will ever reformed. The all kind of hate each other now. So if they did happen to reform (and shame themselves), it'd be no different to the Spice Girls reforming and it truly would be solely about the money. But I'd like to think of Morrissey as higher than that. He has been offered many millions in the past and refused, so I hope he keeps on doing so. They'll always be one of the greatest bands this country, or any country, has ever produced.
dont know if it would be good for a reunion. i mean it could just ruin the whole thing. its nice that they split leaving a great reputation i wouldnt want that ruined
I totally agree. I really wish Jane's Addiction hadn't gotten back together, especially without Eric Avery. It's an affront to their original material. Ditto the Pumpkins, Pistols, etc.
was it hard to learn,,ive been picking up licks and riffs from it by ear but havent put it all together cos i think the album version is layered,ie difficult to do with one guitar..absolutely really catchy tune..really flowing.
by the time morrissey says cleopatra...thats when it hits me and whatever girl I'm trying to get over with in my head goes away, takes half the pain away. This song has greater meaning than the literal words. I feel his emotion even though I may not know the full interpretation of the song.
I think you should'nt 'think' so much. He just thinks that, Some girls are bigger than others!!! We still love you all the same! Fuck all that 'Freudian' shit
i think he's talking about how the majority of the public see very shallowly upon the world, with the most important factors and thoughts in their lives are that 'some girls are bigger than others' and this has happened throughout time, hence the 'from the ice age to the dole age'. also he brings this out in sarcasam with 'as anthony said to cleopatra' etc.
yes - well i wonder is a great obvs example. handsome devil too springs to mind. what made the smiths SO unique and great was the disparate strands of genius, they all brought something to the Smiths, most obvsly Marr and Moz, but Joyce and Rourke too. they wrote themselves into music history..
well said. Wonderful woman, back to the old hous, rusholme ruffians, barbarism begins at home, heaven knows i'm misrabel now, & the list go on & on. They will be forever in r hearts as one of the great bands ever.
their songs were sad and funny in equal measure. where did Moz find those magical words and how did Marr manage to come up with so much sparkling, life affirming music. rusholme ruffians is such an atmosphereic song, you imagine yourself at the funfair.
alas, their best has been. they shone brightly for a brief moment in the 80's (well 4 years), their star never waned they just disappeared (at the top). they were young, full of life and bristling with ideas - they left us with barely a duff track and that's the way it should remain. i'd love them to be mates again, but no music. perfection cannot be bettered.
i want a smiths reunion more than anything,,i mean for hells sake ,,deep purple are still gigging,,,mozz need a kick where the sun dont shine,,how can he deny us the seeing the wittiest sharpest band in history again,,..mozz do it now while you are still good looking.
Deep Purple probably need the money, while Mozz has lots of it so he's not desperate. It's all about the money.... However u r absolutely right, maybe we should start a Facebook profile for a Smiths reunion... No doubt he is still good looking, better than ever....
I think Morrissey is right not to reform The Smiths. They were a great band, and part of an era, but that era has gone, and I'd hate for them to reform and destroy the great legacy they have left. They are old now and that same spirit just isn't there anymore - it'd be no different to listening to a cover-band. It'd be sad. I feel sorry for those bands who are now reforming - it's pathetic and desperate. The Smiths are too good for that. Let them be, I say. Their time has gone.
i dont agree,,do you not think all the people like myself dont deserve a chance to see them live,,the original lineup, marr morissey rourke and joyce,,it can only be done in this life, cos there are no others,,they might be older but its the music people want and the original songs would be the same ,,fortysomething is not old,,im 37,,the difference is the world wants a smiths reunion ,,other bands just do it for the money,,i seen deep purple last year all in their sixties ,,they were great.
I hear where you're coming from. But the only proper way to see them live would be to make a time-machine and transport to the 80s - seeing them now would be fake; it wouldn't really be seeing The Smiths. Their passion, the soul behind the music, has gone. Morrissey has moved on from that; it'd be a flat/embarrassing rendition. It may well satisfy you if they reformed, but you wouldn't really be seeing 'the band' - it'd be like leftovers at the dinner table.
I think he's trying to state how "some girls are bigger than others". Many people go on to explain obesity further, i.e. greediness, poor diet, lazyness etc. While morrisey is putting it down to the fact that it just happens and perhaps the world shouldn't always be concerned about being thin e.g. size zero models.
the guitar lines layered on each other in the end part are just amazing...especially on a real stereo (not an mp3 on a computer). But it's still great either way. Always on of my favorites since I was 20 when it came out.
every smiths' song has something sad deep inside, also songs like this that treat a generic theme has something wistful...i'm not sure if it's the real song that make me sad or morrissey voice...it's weird! what do yuo think about it?
The guitar on this song is beyong amazing. I don't think there's a word in websters friggin dictionary to describe it. i second that! i'd love it if this were the last thing I heard before I die. I'd make my afterlife that much happier haha =)
I don't even know, if I'd like to see the reunite... I think at least MArr lost inspiration...just check out his solo work.... it'S VILE!!! Except of Electronic, which was in the early 90s...!!!
Marr. Jaysus. This track is nothing without him.

every smiths' song has something sad deep inside, also songs like this that treat a generic theme has something wistful...i'm not sure if it's the real song that make me sad or morrissey voice...it's weird! what do yuo think about it?

The guitar on this song is beyong amazing. I don't think there's a word in websters friggin dictionary to describe it. i second that! i'd love it if this were the last thing I heard before I die. I'd make my afterlife that much happier haha =)

I don't even know, if I'd like to see the reunite... I think at least MArr lost inspiration...just check out his solo work.... it'S VILE!!! Except of Electronic, which was in the early 90s...!!!

I love There Is a Light That Never Goes Out, but compared to this dizzling song, it sounds a bit too clean.

Will they ever get reunited ?????

Morrissey said once that he rather eat his own balls than getting reunited with the smiths.
