First, the two men at the start of the film talking about separation of church and state are recruits and not Drill Instructors. They're most likely fresh High school grads and haven't even been able to say the word "I" without getting the shit hazed out of them, let alone carry on a normal conversation, in two months. Second, you don't have to be able to present the perfect speech to believe in something. You just have to have the balls to stand up for it.
