I've never heard that third verse. I love it when I come across new verses to songs I know :) And this is a really nice version. You've got a nice touch on the guitar, too.
It doesn't matter where the song comes from so much is that it's here; it doesn't matter who wrote it, because the author has long since passed; what matters is the music, because if it is loved, it will last.
irishpride9999, like all of your kind, you try to lay claim to almost all that is good in my country. That is a Scottish folk song, get over yourself. Good song mate, buy you a beer anytime.
Yes, this Scottish/Irish debate seems to go round and round. I don't know why...I've never heard an Irishman say 'Lassie' in my life. Plenty of Scots, though. Not to mention that famous Scottish heather...
I absolutely love this song since the first time I heard it. I was on holiday in Scotland in a little pub and all the people started singing it..and this version is really lovely. I long to come to Scotland again. Bye from Italy
One of the top versions on youtube, very heartfelt and well sung. So many people sing this song right, you sing it just right. nice job, I could listen to your version all day.
I listened to maybe 30 versions, many by famous people. None came close to yours. The only other version I like (almost) as much is by an obscure Vermont folksinger named Diane Zeigler. Unfortunately she has little presence on YouTube. I don't know why this song is so easy to get wrong, but when you hear so many different bands and singers get it wrong in exactly the same way (forced, labored) you have to conclude that most who sing the song don't understand it.
Driftingmeadow, thank you. I do not have the chords to this song written down anywhere. Made some changes as needed and just committed it memory as I learned. However, I can offer this:
D - G - D - G - D - G - D/F# - Bm - A(something!) - G - D/F# - G - A (slide to 5 on high E) - D - G - D
And that repeats for each verse. Enjoy, and I hope it's accurate enough to use. :)
Aww. Thank you Eugene. You sang me a lullaby while I enjoyed the inebriation of the forbidden vegetation. I sat here as a Noble Childe as the bard sang of thyme.
Listen pal: Do you have any idea who I am? For one thing, I'm totally famous on YouTube. Plus, I'm #1 in Japan! How dare you speak to me in ALL CAPS! マグレブ 新幹線 鉄道 電車 中央新幹線 磁気浮上式鉄道!!!
Neutrinoide, what do you have in mind? I might have something already recorded that you can use. I've got everything from folk like this song to electronica, rock and metal.
You're good man. I remember you mentioning you played guitar, but I didn't know you sang too. This is good stuff. I'll be checking your stuff out on Myspace. I really like the old folk type stuff, not enough of it out there these days. Keep it up man.
That was good and I normally listen to metal. It's going in my favorites.
I'm sure a lot of girls would go for a guy who can play the guitar and has a good voice like that. I don't know how much of it was edited by SoundForge but it doesn't' sound like a whole lot.
Maybe you'll get that hot brunette or redhead you wanted in your 5 things video.
BWF, thank you much. Oddly enough, my roots are in rock and metal. I've made a concerted effort to learn bluegrass and folk styles only over the last three years or so. Maybe I'll eventually post something plugged in.
My current band situation is schizophrenic. Playing twice per week, rock and metal on weekends, bluegrass and folk on weekdays. And it's the same core guys doing it all. It's both hilarious and weird, and it's usually a blast.
wonderful
