lol everyone stop spam pop rock metal. I like every music... if it's good :) i play cello and Rostropovich was the god of this!!! Great music Great VId pls stop hating and enjoy :)
We can't all be stoggy purists about music. It's hard to write a great pop song among hundreds of crappy ones. But what we need is to keep great music like THIS for appreciation, performance, and study and more composers among classical musicians. People used to write songs in the romantic era to rebel against the overpriced production of orchestral works, so why don't we rebel with symphonies?! XD
Watching Rostropovich in person was amazing. I saw him several years ago with the Seattle Symphony, and in his mid-80's he bounded onto the stage with his cello, as much energy, it seemed as a man much, much younger, and he played that way too.
@wolffe93 you have no argument, drop it. In no way does any genre of music require as much time, effort, and skill as the gigantic and historic "genre" of classical. I'm not going to insult you for your ignorance, but you don't want to go there.
Would people stop arguing about whether classical or pop or rock or anything is better than the other and just enjoy the music? Everyone will agree that any form of music takes a period of time to be good at. Eminem wasn't standing on some street corner, making remarks, when they signed him up.
I love this video for two reasons, first Rostropovich is one of the greatest musicians of all time and second the Dvorak concerto is brings about a full use of the cello's unique voice. But I also hate watching this video because I see the comments riddled with petty argument opposed to praise and admiration of a historic performer and a historic piece.
@ytertyu What the hell is wrong with you? I can garuntee that you would not say that to somebody's face. You don't know anything about them or there mom. Other than that your reply was completly tastless.

i've been playing the cello for 4 years, but I've never made the time to listen to this. I feel so sorry for myself for not finding this sooner. Rostropovich rocks. he's better than yo yo ma by like 1000x!!! but both are awesome
Any musician, regardless of the genre or 'idiom' commences with the rudiments of an instrument, then progresses throughout their playing lives. Even if the technical development reaches a limit, the musicality and ability to express feeling does not.
To place these prescriptive time scales on different forms is merely a desire to create an elitist self-delusion. The true musician respects all forms of music as long as it is sincerely produced.

Couple years ago I "fallowed" Rostropovich from 61st B&N to Carnegie Hall ... it was around 9pm ... it was rainy ... I was like 20 steps away ... I wanted to talk with him but then I told myself "there's nothing that you can tell him that he never heard before :)" so I just fallowed ... It was AMAZING feeling ... I will always remember.
@musicman1724 It will......And then it will reach 2 million.....And most likely 1 billion. Because music this great will never, EVER die. Just look how long it has been since it was written. @jwunschie14 It will take a REALLY long time to reach 1 billion. Society is corrupt and only favors more of the Hip-Hop style of music which is complete garbage and impure, but I agree with your viewpoint.
Your opinion is ignorant and uneducated. You have probably not given a lot of hip hop a real listen. Of course the vast majority of it is trashy, but so is most classical music. Your idea that it is impure is an elitist and uninformed one.
a)You haven't listened to enough of it to have an opinion based on fact, thus you really shouldn't have an opinion on it
or
b)You HAVE listened to a lot of both classical and hip hop, and decided that YOU don't like it...the art in itself is not "impure".
@xplosivkid Dude, none of classical music is trashy....it doesn't even make any sense. I'm guessing you love Hip-Hop? If you do don't listen to Rostro play and go watch "talented" people sing. For the better of yourself
@xbasket12x In essence I can see how you think this way. I take it you are a classical music lover like myself, and you have to know the following: However hyped up and popular pop artists are now, the music of Bach and Beethoven, Brahms, Dvorak, and others will ALWAYS outlive that of Jay Z, Eminem, even Bieber, despite how talented they might be (Bieber excluded...). Their music isn't close to the level of genius that went into that of such composers.
@watutman well i don't know what mozart you listen to, but i must disagree with you. Mozart didn't always write perfect music, but his range of highlights extend to greater proportions than any other composer. i'd say it would be opposite, 3/4 of Mozart is good to extremely good (if not the best) and 1/4 is so so.
With all due respect to the kind of skill it takes to successfully perform a piece like this, that is not the only way to measure the quality of music. If anything I think a more important question would be what kind of feelings it evokes when heard and/or seen, and that will be totally different for different listeners.
I like your comment but I do NOT think it is ANY exaggeration to say some of Mozart's pieces are NOT worth listening to...I haven't found any! They're ALL very good to outstanding. As for Beethoven, one could easily say that they're ALL outstanding.
Your first sentence contradicts the ending statement. You say that it isn't an exaggeration to say that Mozarts pieces aren't worth listening to but then say they are all good. Nonetheless, I think Mozarts pieces especially must be performed well. I have heard recorded performances that seems like the pieces were lacking and then heard another performance of the same piece that was incredible. They must be performed exceptionally well with the right ensemble.
to comper classic music that stand the wear of time for centuries is like compering humens to eggs, ask your self if in 100 years there will be 5% of the world pupolation who will remember michel jakson or abba or akon, bach and mozart yes will be remember.does not mean that one cant enjoy temporery music lol
@xavier3185 i have to disagree, i just listend to his version of this concerto, its just way too fast, just rushed down, i like this version much better.
my favourit cellist cuz he doesnt make these weird "jizz in my pants"-faces while playing xD kiddin. hes just technically perfect, espacially the trills and double stops are insane. so is is right hand
I used Rostropovich in one of my college essays. Spoke about how he was my inspiration to play cello and that I wished to play with such precision as him. Boy, how I miss him!
There are usually two types of musicians. The ones who have mastered technique, and those who can really show emotion and beauty in their playing. Rostropovich has mastered both types of playing.
Everyone please just shut up with your stupid flame wars okay? It doesn't make you look or sound smart in ANY way. Just enjoy the piece for what it is and Rostropovich is the greatest cellist that has ever lived.
@princenosiatajansen dude, don't be a hater, xbasket12x is just saying that Rostropovich is amazing (and he is) and if you think about it, if there was someone who was at the same level of playing as Rostropovich or better he or she'd be famous and you'd know about them, wouldn't you? so stop being a hater, peace on earth, and just listen to the beautiful music.
I spoke with a guy from France who had no idea who Bach, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, or Mozart was, let alone Dvorak. It's not just Americans who don't know, it's modern society. That is all.
whew, does anyone how the bow stroke beginning at 7:19 is called and how to do or practice it? is it spiccato or something? or is it simply very fast slurred staccato? definitely bindblowing performance, altough i like du Pre's rendition better (esp. the second movement)
@wildtollwut1 I don't think there's a name for it, I just checked on the score it's bars 158-165 and it's really hard to play ; )
I remember Navarra (a french cellist) had some good advice for practice :
instead of playing (for example) BGCCGB play double stops : BG GC GC BG and so on.
When the notes are ok, continue with double stops in the middle of the bow with accents on down bows. then, you can go faster, with the right hand fingers making sure that the bows stays firmly on the strings.
@kubbelisgod thanks for your kind reply :) I'll have a try but, well, I think this whole concerto is way too difficult for me. Out of sheer curiosity I started with the first two pages and found it quite doable up to the part mentioned. I noticed I have a tendency to always try hard pieces and work on them - might not be the best method to practice but I like trying the real stuff...
Miluju Dvorak, a ja nesnasim klasicka muzika :D Rostropovich bude vzdycky v muj srdce :P
I always stick on a Dvorak playlist.... it's just crazy, how good it is. Especially with the whole 'classical music is stupid' sort of outlook these days :))
Know what else is sad? When someone says "i wish the majority of modern society could appreciate the classical style" when they haven't met the majority of modern society and only go by what television tells them and they try to sound smart with this statement.
News flash - just because something isn't on television doesn't mean people aren't aware of it or that they don't like it.
@DrunkenPiano don't be an ass, nobody in america knows about music like this. they're too busy shoving their faces with more fattening food and watching survivor or american idol all night. the masses are stupid, it's a fact. it truly is a shame the world does not appreciate more music like this
@itsumonihon you can't make massive generalizations based on the little bit of information you have gathered. you don't know all americans. i believe you're speaking of the US as CANADA is part of the continent of NORTH AMERICA. It's a CONTINENT and then there is SOUTH AMERICA.
@DrunkenPiano I can't speak for other generations, but I know that, in the United States, mine (I'm currently 16) does not generally appreciate orchestral music. Even in my school, which has won several state championships for music, almost nobody knows who Tchaikovsky is, much less Dvorak, Brahms, Sibelius, ect. Even students involved in music aren't much better, perhaps knowing the names of famous composers, but nothing about their works. How sad.
@itsumonihon I don't watch survivor or american idol. I like music such as this and I have been raised with it since I was a kid.
If we are to take a few generalizations and state them as "facts" then all Europeans are rude and tactless people who belong in caves where they can't infect the world with their rudeness and disrespect.
@itsumonihon Sadly the majority of the Europeans that are on the internet are rude and tactless. This is simply my experience with the french, italians, english, germans, and spaniards. Which may make up the majority of the internet users.
@itsumonihon Many Europeans jump to the conclusion that America is full of fat people, whilst this may be truth, we aren't the fattest in the world. England and several other west European nations are rising up on that fat list.
You seem to be one of those tactless people. I don't know if you're European or not but your statements are crude. Realize that a percentage is but a portion of a whole. You apparently don't know this.
@PaulTortelier There was a ridiculous generalization made and so I mentioned what I come across more, how I would be considered foolish because of this makes you look rather stupid. Is it not true that it's not just America that has declining popularity in this genre of music? It is much of the world that is going through this decline. So that statement was obviously not well thought, perchance you should have directed your comment at someone else.
@tuopadrino I like how -based on the type of video in question, the "# of dislikes comment + punishment" comment differs a lot in content, but is still there. So for a classical music video, "sitting down and listening to a stern talking" would be the equivalent of a "(#dislikes) should be gang raped" in a hip hop dance video.
yes i would LOVE to use the vuvuleza with this music :D i joke i joke, vuvuleza sound is tht football pic near the full screen button (if people dont know)
You may say some are more precise ; some play more in tune ; some put more delicateness.
But Rostropovich has something unreal : wherever he puts his bow and left hand fingers, the sound is the same, brilliant, robust, singing ; never weak or plaintive ; always enthusiastic and moving.
this may be the case with you but, believe you me this is not the popular view, and unlike you think i think, people listen to her music for the same reason people would rather listen to rostropovich, instead of listening to some uknown artist, the point being she is unfortunately a role model, the reason i don't like her is that she is getting paid easily hundreds of thousands of pounds every month for practically nothing, as i said hedonistic society.
Why are people here reacting to someone who might like or might not like hip hop or rap or classical music? It's about Dvorak's cello concerto here. That's what you've been listening to, so react on THAT!
Having said that: I really like this performance. Good job!
@vanboaconstrictor mostly the hip hop..is just abot sex...L prefer trova or rock, blues, ajzz..'cause it have something better to exprese(of course l just mean the hip hop 'cause the rap is something depper than that or the funk, etc.)
@cirecsc err rapping is one of the four major stylistic elements within hip hop (in other words, hip hop involves rapping, so it's fairly silly to separate the two as if they're different genres of music...hip hop is the genre, rapping is "the instrument"). And no, most hip hop is not about sex -- a large portion of it is especially radio music -- but the majority is not. Of course, it's a silly point, because a hell of a lot of rock music is about sex and nobody whines about it like hip hop.
Perfect piece of music.

b)You HAVE listened to a lot of both classical and hip hop, and decided that YOU don't like it...the art in itself is not "impure".
xplosivkid 10 months ago
@xplosivkid Dude, none of classical music is trashy....it doesn't even make any sense. I'm guessing you love Hip-Hop? If you do don't listen to Rostro play and go watch "talented" people sing. For the better of yourself
xbasket12x 10 months ago
@xbasket12x In essence I can see how you think this way. I take it you are a classical music lover like myself, and you have to know the following: However hyped up and popular pop artists are now, the music of Bach and Beethoven, Brahms, Dvorak, and others will ALWAYS outlive that of Jay Z, Eminem, even Bieber, despite how talented they might be (Bieber excluded...). Their music isn't close to the level of genius that went into that of such composers.

Hey, 3/4 of Mozart is extremely boring! But the highlights are truly great.
watutman 1 year ago
@watutman well i don't know what mozart you listen to, but i must disagree with you. Mozart didn't always write perfect music, but his range of highlights extend to greater proportions than any other composer. i'd say it would be opposite, 3/4 of Mozart is good to extremely good (if not the best) and 1/4 is so so.
plagueofangels666 11 months ago
With all due respect to the kind of skill it takes to successfully perform a piece like this, that is not the only way to measure the quality of music. If anything I think a more important question would be what kind of feelings it evokes when heard and/or seen, and that will be totally different for different listeners.

I like your comment but I do NOT think it is ANY exaggeration to say some of Mozart's pieces are NOT worth listening to...I haven't found any! They're ALL very good to outstanding. As for Beethoven, one could easily say that they're ALL outstanding.
So I respectfully differ.
RunWalkRace 1 year ago
@RunWalkRace

There are usually two types of musicians. The ones who have mastered technique, and those who can really show emotion and beauty in their playing. Rostropovich has mastered both types of playing.

I spoke with a guy from France who had no idea who Bach, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, or Mozart was, let alone Dvorak. It's not just Americans who don't know, it's modern society. That is all.

whew, does anyone how the bow stroke beginning at 7:19 is called and how to do or practice it? is it spiccato or something? or is it simply very fast slurred staccato? definitely bindblowing performance, altough i like du Pre's rendition better (esp. the second movement)
wildtollwut1 1 year ago
@wildtollwut1 I don't think there's a name for it, I just checked on the score it's bars 158-165 and it's really hard to play ; )
I remember Navarra (a french cellist) had some good advice for practice :
instead of playing (for example) BGCCGB play double stops : BG GC GC BG and so on.
When the notes are ok, continue with double stops in the middle of the bow with accents on down bows. then, you can go faster, with the right hand fingers making sure that the bows stays firmly on the strings.
kubbelisgod 1 year ago
@wildtollwut1 keep sure you don't apply too much pressure on the bow, just keep it firmly on the strings.
I hope this advice helps you as much as it helped me ; )
kubbelisgod 1 year ago
@kubbelisgod thanks for your kind reply :) I'll have a try but, well, I think this whole concerto is way too difficult for me. Out of sheer curiosity I started with the first two pages and found it quite doable up to the part mentioned. I noticed I have a tendency to always try hard pieces and work on them - might not be the best method to practice but I like trying the real stuff...
I hope one day i will be able to play this :)

DrunkenPiano 1 year ago
@DrunkenPiano don't be an ass, nobody in america knows about music like this. they're too busy shoving their faces with more fattening food and watching survivor or american idol all night. the masses are stupid, it's a fact. it truly is a shame the world does not appreciate more music like this
itsumonihon 1 year ago
@itsumonihon you can't make massive generalizations based on the little bit of information you have gathered. you don't know all americans. i believe you're speaking of the US as CANADA is part of the continent of NORTH AMERICA. It's a CONTINENT and then there is SOUTH AMERICA.
DrunkenPiano 1 year ago
@DrunkenPiano I can't speak for other generations, but I know that, in the United States, mine (I'm currently 16) does not generally appreciate orchestral music. Even in my school, which has won several state championships for music, almost nobody knows who Tchaikovsky is, much less Dvorak, Brahms, Sibelius, ect. Even students involved in music aren't much better, perhaps knowing the names of famous composers, but nothing about their works. How sad.
Polititic 1 year ago
@itsumonihon I don't watch survivor or american idol. I like music such as this and I have been raised with it since I was a kid.
If we are to take a few generalizations and state them as "facts" then all Europeans are rude and tactless people who belong in caves where they can't infect the world with their rudeness and disrespect.
MrTaikutsu 1 year ago
@MrTaikutsu IMO most europeans ARE tactless and rude
itsumonihon 1 year ago
@itsumonihon Sadly the majority of the Europeans that are on the internet are rude and tactless. This is simply my experience with the french, italians, english, germans, and spaniards. Which may make up the majority of the internet users.
MrTaikutsu 1 year ago
@itsumonihon Many Europeans jump to the conclusion that America is full of fat people, whilst this may be truth, we aren't the fattest in the world. England and several other west European nations are rising up on that fat list.
You seem to be one of those tactless people. I don't know if you're European or not but your statements are crude. Realize that a percentage is but a portion of a whole. You apparently don't know this.

@PaulTortelier Reallly? How so? Give me a point in all my statements that would show that. You are the fool.
MrTaikutsu 1 year ago

You may say some are more precise ; some play more in tune ; some put more delicateness.
But Rostropovich has something unreal : wherever he puts his bow and left hand fingers, the sound is the same, brilliant, robust, singing ; never weak or plaintive ; always enthusiastic and moving.

i love how hardly ANYONE that's posting comments about rostropovich or the cello concerto in general know what they're talking about.
sVOGUE 1 year ago
this may be the case with you but, believe you me this is not the popular view, and unlike you think i think, people listen to her music for the same reason people would rather listen to rostropovich, instead of listening to some uknown artist, the point being she is unfortunately a role model, the reason i don't like her is that she is getting paid easily hundreds of thousands of pounds every month for practically nothing, as i said hedonistic society.
aidan6123 1 year ago
Why are people here reacting to someone who might like or might not like hip hop or rap or classical music? It's about Dvorak's cello concerto here. That's what you've been listening to, so react on THAT!
Having said that: I really like this performance. Good job!

@vanboaconstrictor mostly the hip hop..is just abot sex...L prefer trova or rock, blues, ajzz..'cause it have something better to exprese(of course l just mean the hip hop 'cause the rap is something depper than that or the funk, etc.)
cirecsc 1 year ago
@cirecsc err rapping is one of the four major stylistic elements within hip hop (in other words, hip hop involves rapping, so it's fairly silly to separate the two as if they're different genres of music...hip hop is the genre, rapping is "the instrument"). And no, most hip hop is not about sex -- a large portion of it is especially radio music -- but the majority is not. Of course, it's a silly point, because a hell of a lot of rock music is about sex and nobody whines about it like hip hop.
