  • My mom doesn't want me to go natural. She said I would look like a fool with big nappy hair. But of course I didn't listen to her and now I'm 17 weeks post. My hair is too much for me to handle now and it has gotten thinner so instead of going natural, I'm transitioning to texlax which is still putting chemicals in my hair but at least it will be healthier. One day I feel like I'll try to transition back to natural. But it's hard, I'm only 18 and have been relaxed for over 15 years. :S

  • I like this video, the song is perfect and yes you are!!!

  • @ASIDEU This is "I'm Here" off of the Color Purple soundtrack, but Fantasia sang thsi version on American Idol about 3 years ago. You can find it on YouTube.

  • how long do u wait before u cut off the straighten ends

  • @sexciB95 I waited about 6 months to do the big chop. It just depends on the length you want yourr hair to be to be comfortable.

  • Your hair looks awesome!! I'm glad you're proud of your hair too. My family keeps looking at me weird to because i want to go natural but keep your head up.

  • @refugeslove My family too. I've been transitioning for 7 1/2 months now. I actually want to do the BC but I'm kinda scared of what my family will say. I'm really beginning to embrace the idea that I can be just as beautiful with natural hair as with relaxed hair. Hope your journey goes really well!!!

  • im thinking about going natural, i havent gotten a perm since august of last year and ive been in micros since january. i took them out a few days ago and i am terrified to cut my hair. i dont know what to di. any advice?

  • Love it! I'm about 10-11 months in on my transition although I refuse to get the BIG CHOP lol. My hair has grown a lot though and I love it. For me, I just keep weaves in my hair until I decide that it's time to go all of the way.

  • what song is that ?

  • Yes you are beautiful my black american natural queen

  • I miss my frizzy little curls. I'm biracial so I don't think I ever really needed a perm but I managed to convince my mom when I was 13. ahh I look back and realize how beautiful my hair was and regret it. Can't wait to have those curls back!!

  • many success to you on your journey Im on my own and it is work.

  • Good job! Takes courage. I did it too, one big shave :-)

  • he has a really frizzly hair!!

  • @leroyworld "he" is a girl lol

  • @l0serpants i know ^^

  • nice vvideo, but id rather have it permed and not spend five hours trying to get a comb thru my hair. i get it permed just to make hygiene quick, i mean five minutes now and im totally done combing it, my whole childhood it took hours i used to dread it every morning. but either way go for it, i think a persons hair should be what they wand not what this person or that person wants that goes for ppl afraid of natural or afraid of perms

  • lovEly video :) hEy! & btW iLove thiS s0nG -CheCk ouT my C0vEr wHen iSang iT on mY pG.

  • transitioning for about 10 months now... i might cut it in october (a year of transitioning) or April (a year and a half)

    wish me luck!

  • @KrazyGreen17 Good luck!

  • freedom!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • you are a beautiful young lady, and so it your hair. i cant wait until my hair get a little longer. but yours is really nice

  • my mom says my natural hair looks bushy and not straight.. which i thought was kind of a given but my dad says he's ashamed of my hair.. so i guess i'm getting a perm on saturday after 9 months of transitioning.................................. =/

  • @nessawithsmiles Did your mom expect your hair to be different? I mean is it a totally different texure than her and you dads? Why would she expect it to be straight? Its sad that yoru Dad is "ashamed" of your hair when it came from his genes. I think you should do what is best for you, not your parents, even if it involves getting a perm. Do it for YOU. In life you'll find that no matter what you do, the only person you can truly make happy all of the time is YOURSELF. Peace & Blessings!

  • @divinequeen07 thanks!!! my parents finally said i can do it, im so excited!!

  • @nessawithsmiles it's YOUR hair and if you want to wear it natural then wear it natural. your natural hair is a part of who your are. being ashamed of your hair the way it grows out of your head is just crazy. do what makes you happy b/c if you're just trying to please others you won't ever please yourself which is the most important thing

  • @nessawithsmiles Oh, wow! Well, u should be able to choose whether u want to have natural hair or not! Being natural is beautiful, and it's being yourself. That's how either u or ur mom was created like! natural hair is not only bushy, but it's good, natural hair! So be yourself, and let your parents know that u love urself that way! =)

  • @nessawithsmiles I agree with divinequeen07 do what is best for u, not ur parents.Your natural hair is apart of the way God made you and God did not create anything ugly on you.(remember that)

  • @nessawithsmiles did u perm it?

  • i think your hair looks so much nicer now, you look really beautiful :)

  • @ifellinlovewithadead thanks so much!

  • aww you made me cry that is so naturaly beautiful

  • @capricorn579 thank you!

  • Im miss those great natural hair gurus you named at the end of your vid

  • Love your hair.

Whats the name of this song?

  • im transitioning to natural hair. but am scared to do the big chop. its not easy doing this and i have been getting alot of crazy looks at works. this is hard

  • @frecklezac when u grow natural, they will be lookin at your thick, long beautiful hair!

  • beautiful job :)

  • Beautiful!!! What song is this playing?

  • I long did you keep the micros in?

  • @MsEthnicBeauty she said a month in the DESCRIPTION.

  • U DONT HAVE TO CUT UR HAIR

  • I recently made the decision to go natural and so far im 4 months in! Im finding some real inspirational videos on youtube (surprisingly!) Thanks for the encouragement!!!

  • Glad I could provide some inspiration. Happy transitioning!

  • im goign natural because i cant btoher with the perm hair i cant wait to reach arm pit length maybe that will take for ever lol cause im black and farican from ajamica what u guys think how long u think it would real arm pit length?

  • I'm not sure. At least 2-3 years

  • im going natural i cant wait!!!

  • Congrats, Queen!

  • When you did the big chop and you got micros [ single braids ] isn't that also a protective hair style that you can use ?

I was planning on doing protective hair styles until my relaxed hair meets my natural hair, cutting it and then doing single braids as a protective hair style

  • Sorry this response is so late. Yes, braids is a protective hairstyle. I'm thinking of getting some this winter.

  • i want to make my hair natrual but do i have to do the chop???

  • no some people choose to do that bt u can wait till your hair gets long enough like shoulder length then cut it so it wont be so short

  • nuh uh

  • that was so beautiful, i cried.

  • Thanks :o) Glad you found this vid touching. Going natural was a very spiritual experience for me.

  • i really want to go natural with a passion but im afraid of the B.C and i also want to make sure i use the right products for my hair can i plese get some help...

  • Sure, I can help. Send me a personal message with any questions you may have.

  • thank you for posting!

  • Thanks for watching!

  • nice vid sweety

  • Thanks :o)

  • Natural's a real beautiful look ;) I'd try but my hair is really thick and when I perm it, it looks nice long so natural would be crazy to manage :<

  • Not necissarily, but you know your hair better than I do. I thought the same thing before I did the big chop, and I was pleasantly surprised.

  • I love this song

  • thank u

  • Love it! I'm trying to make that natural transition myself so I keep watching beautiful black women like yourself to remind me that I don't need chemicals in my hair and it's okay to be natural. Thank you!

  • Song matches the video perfectly <33

    :)

  • this is awesome ...great and funny video

  • love it queen :)

  • Beautiful video! Inspiring! :)

  • Ok so I plan on going natural 8.22.09!!! And I want to put a sew in right after I cut my hair.. Is that possible? And this video inspired me! All my friends with relaxed hair are teling me not to do it!! But Im going for it!

  • Hello, I am natural and I say go for it! Ppl are always going to have something to say but watch when you do it, how many of those friends that said not to will want to do it as well:) Also, make sure that you appreciate your natural hair before you decide to weave it up. Appreciating your napps, kinks, coils and curls is really important in your natural journey. It is ok to weave it until it grows but make sure you rock your fro as well and not cover it all the time.

  • did you do it???

  • this vid almost made me cry. i want to go natural and I;m definitely scared too, but ur video story is definitely inspiration. You are absolutely beautiful and so courageous, but u rock the TWA well! peace and blessings!

  • Thank You!

  • Don't be scared sister! It can be challenging but I bet you love it! Give it a try

  • this is a good video on transitioning... you said you got scared and put in some micros lol...that's what I did and took the micros out and I was definitely scared then....glad you went natural.!

  • Thanks Queen!

  • I love the video...the music was PERFECT! Your hair is beautiful and looks strong and healthy. Good fortune to you!

  • I am also going natuaral. I am 46 and very light skinned. I was afraid at first about my color and people looking at my hair. Now I love my hair. It is shoulder length.

  • Congrats!

  • I know it's a stupid question but why did you have to cut your hair when going natural?

  • I had to cut my hair because relaxed hair can never return to its natural state. To go "natural" you have to cut off all of the relaxed ends. You can grow it out to the length you want before cutting (transition), but it takes a long time. Most folks get tired of the two textures and decide to do the "big chop" like I did.

  • The background music suited your video to a "T". Thank you for lovin u .

  • Thanks for the comment :o)

  • I love this video..inspires me to go natural..I have been wanting to do it for a while but I don't know...*confused*

  • I understand. I was nervous in the beginning as well. You can see that from the video, but in the end, the health of my hair overshadowed my fear. You have to do what's best for you. Thanks for the comment :o)

  • i want that song,whats the title?

  • This is Fantasia singing "I'm Here" from The Color Purple the Musical. She'll be reprising her role as Celie this summer in D.C. and in the fall in Chicago.

  • im a 15yr old african american GUY

i love natural hair on girls. its so free

my mom is a hairstylst and she uses perms. but i dont like it, she doesnt really care rather i like it or not. but she has one.

recently i decided to make some really cool hairstyled for natural hair on paper and alot of girls at my school really like them. so im gonna show my mom on of these days. and hopfully more girls will go natural.

trust me, you would love it if you seen it!!!!!

    esp. for your hair!!!!!

  • Wow, arab3513, it's nice to see a young man who appreciates natural hair on girls/women. Go ahead and show your mom those pictures. I'm sure she'll appreciate your creativity.

  • thanks alot.

yeah i hope she appreciates them. but like i said, she likes to use perms and relaxers.

  • Hey..do you remember the 1st day you started your transition or just the month and year?

  • Well my last perm was on March 23, 2007 so I mark that as when my transition started. It was shortly after I got that perm that I decided to go natural.

  • Wants the matter Kev? Jealous 'cause a BROTHA got the girl and YOU didn't?!?

    LMBAO@ you.

  • just buy a weave

  • Why don't you buy it for me.

  • um no

y cant u buy it urself

  • The better question Kev is WHY can't this sista wear her "genetically-bred" hair?

    "Everything begins with one."

  • @ Kev:

A piece of shit? (So much for maturity and racial sensitivity!) The hair that you reference IS who and what the sista IS. That cannot be denied. Speaking of denial, the sista is "happy to be nappy," Her decision and not YOURS.

"Say it LOUD, WE are BOTH BLACK and PROUD."

Deal with THAT. Stick a fork in you---you're DONE.

  • Please everyone... don't respond to this person anymore, its not worth it... ^_^ i love my natural hair to divine queen. I LOVE IT SOOOO MUCH!!!

  • Thanks lovelydcj :o)

  • lmao, that's sounds like something i would of said

  • wow beautiful song im trying to go natural i havent had a perm in 1 month and my hair is thick

  • keep at it. I'm 7 weeks post and I can't turn back now, because Im loving what I'm seeing. There are so many natural hair inspirations on youtube. Hang in there you will be glad you did

  • your beautiful natural!

  • You go, girl!

  • Girl! I was 15 when i... no I was 16 Anyways 16 got the big chop done now im 17 and am loving it. I want it to grow out long than maybe as i age I'll lock it up you feels me!! lol

  • I'm loving me natural too!

  • Omg what song is this? who sings it and whats the title please asap?

  • The title of this song is "I'm Here". Fantasia sang this song on American Idol in '07 and on Broadway when she played Celie in The Color Purple. I had the pleasure of seeing her in New York that year and she was even better live.

  • Thank you!

  • OMG I LOVE YOU. And 00:55 is the reason why. I love that you can admit that you were scared. So many people have been taught that long hair is what makes a woman beautiful It's not. Long hair is something to hide behind. That's why not everyone can rock a bald head. It's physically exposing and makes one feel emotionally exposed too. Much love sister. Stay Natural and inspire others to be brave and proud.

  • Thank you so much for your kind words :o)

  • ur so brave!! after my big chop i kept it in braids 4 a whole year! n i still am until the summer when i'll wear it out, but when summer's over im puttin it in braids until april 2010! i cant wait until then when i'll be a s comfortable as u 2 wear it out!!

  • Hey, I always say do what works for you. You'll get there in your own time, until then, do what you feel comfortable with. Thanks for the comment Queen.

  • Nice video!!! I was so scared to cut my hair because I thought I was going to look like a boy but I did it. Check out my transition.

  • Checked out your vid. Lookin' good Queen! Your hair is growing really fast.

  • do you necessarily have to 2 do the "big Chop"??? am goign natural and i really dnt want to do it and my natural hair has been growing like crazy and my perm is almost out.when i ask plp if i shld cut it they tell me no, i dunno wut do help plz

  • If your perm is almost out then it is not neccessary to do the big chop. People do the big chop to cut off all the relaxed ends but if yours are almost grown out then just cut the rest off or if your natural hair is not at the length you want it yet then wait it out. But you don't have to do the big chop!

  • im the same age and feel the same way

  • Haha. Me too. I have braids in right now too. Im gonna prolli cut it in the summer. Yay! New hair! Then again, i had to cut my hair before, because of the damage. :/

  • Right

  • Well, if your worried about what people will say then I think you should keep it braided during the school year to let it grow out and then chop it in the summer. By then it will be long enough to braid again if you are worried about rocking your natural hair and you'll have a little more versatility.

  • I'm technically a white person, but I have african textured hair. I would go natural, but unfortunately it doesn't look nearly as good on me, and I hate having to relax and or press it. Does anyone have any advice for me??

  • yes my daughter is the same. twisting hair into big 2 strand twists at night and taking out and fluffing it in the morning with a bit of smoothing serum helps. Also another style is to wet through with an oil and water mix and scrunch into style. You might need to redo hair around lunchtime or mid afternoon because you know there is the tendency for the hair to shrink or frizz as the day goes by

  • ThanX:)

  • She's simply beautiful.

  • blessings sista u r very beautiful ....

  • Thank you so much!

  • you're beautiful sista

  • Thank you Queen :o)

  • cute i like it :)) Its nice to see women that are confident enough to do this :D I'm stil struggling and debating whether or not i should but thank you for the video. Oh whats the song playing i liked it :)

  • This is Fantasia singing "I'm Here" from the musical "The Color Purple". Thanks for the comment!

  • you look so good with natural hair..then perm hair...keep it up girl!!!!

  • love it sista!

  • Peace Queen,

    Congratulations!

    See my Nappy Nappy videos.

    One love!

    Kamal

  • My mom refuses to let me shave my hair off, and I'm tired of having permed hair. I first started getting perms when I was around 12 and I'm sick of it.

  • I really want to go natural again. Do I have to shave all the permed hair off for the natural stuff to grow back good? Do I really have to get bald??

  • it depends on ur hair type...my hair is naturally kinky curly, yet soft & manageable, & i cut if to abt an inch short, but bcuz i could wear it curly it wasn't a hassle...cut as much permed hair as possible keeping the new growth, & deep condition A LOT! stay away from braids, or any type of weave that pulls on the hair or tangles it, grease/oil & too much product is the enemy. If u have to use it, only put it on the hair, not the scalp. My hair got to shoulder length w/in a year.

  • cute video

  • That was an extremely real and empowering video. The back ground music add strength to your journey as well as inspiration to the struggle of being a "BLACK WOMAN". Thank you for helping me make a decision about my own journey.

  • Thank you for the beautiful video sistah, I'm in the fourth month of my transition and I've had pick and drop/micro braids and Ghana Cornrow thus far. I stopped using proccessed products too and am growing out the processed hair for the big chop after winter. Much love to all the Natural sistahs (inspirational) and to the sistahs in transition. I feel freer already, the power's always in the choice of what we do, not just following the status quo.

  • YES! lets break for the relaxers aka mental slavery!

i love ur natural hair it looks beau-tiful!

  • Agreed! It's beautiful!

  • I cant wait to love me "NATURALLY"lol, Im 10 mons in transition cant wait til I chop off the relaxed ends. After that Im thinking of putting s-curls, but wondering if it would work on lengthy hair, cuz my natural hair is shoulder length

    any advice?

  • I've never used s-curl before, but I know a lot of natural women on YouTube use Kinky Curly Curling Custard to accent their natural curls. Google it to go directly to the site. My hair is very tightly coiled, so I just wear an afro or a puff most of the time.

  • ITS in powering to have nappyjoe

  • OMG... i cut my hair off... what do i do now.. its cute.. but i dont how long i can last being bald

  • Yep, it's a big decision to make. Just keep doing your research and you'll find clarity.

    Peace Queen

  • hey there just wanted to give a few words of encouragement for us natural sistahs out there-We need the support! I'm out in philly, natural for 12 years and the attention from brothers has faded along with the perm. Is this a regional thing? I cant go back to the perm! I love my hair. I love to see us embrace ourselves and our beauty. Its not always easy but its worth it. Next step, sisterlocs! congrats to you fellow Queen.

  • It may be regional, because it seems I started getting more attention from guys after I cut my hair. I was surprised because I thought the opposite would happen. Sometimes men are fickle like that. Thanks for the comment Queen!

  • That made me want to cry lol. I keep coming close to going back to a relaxer. I've been transitioning for about six months now and it's hard to go to a salon right now so of course I'm looking a hot mess. You've inspired me to keep at it. Hopefully I'll find a new natural hair beautician.

  • I'm glad I could provide you with some inspiration. Hang in there!

  • good for u girl. I have been letting my hair go natural for a while now. It just takes forever for it to grow so I just get braids to help it along. But no relaxers for me!

  • Yay! You're hair will thank you :o) Enjoy your napptural journey.

  • natural is beautiful, beauty, thank you for the inspiration. stay beautiful

    Terry

  • Thanks Terry! If you look closely at the background of the gallery pic, your piece gets a cameo. Yay! I appreciate the comment :o)

  • Hello Everyone:

My hair is already very short, but in order for me to keep it as straight as possible because short hair grows out faster. I have basically noticed thinning of my hair from over perming, and I'm at the point of cutting the rest of the permed hair which isn't much and then at that point, I just don't know. I don't really know what I will look like. Fear is a big deal here to make the next step.

  • Oh dear. Go to your doctor.
