Watched this last night on TCM. All I can say is what a strange film that is very haunting along with being a beautifully shot film. Isabelle Adjani is great and is one of the most beautiful women ever to grace the silver screen. It not hard to understand why she won awards for her role in this. After you watch it, you seem to find yourself asking yourself what was this all about as it is very very deep and very hard to understand what the true meaning is.
GREAT MOVIE. The first time you watch it you might think it was pretentious neurotic rubbish but then you start thinking about it and certain scenes and next thing you know you're ...possessed. lol
Everybody raves about The Tenant, this is actually much better in the long run.
A true cinematic clusterfuck, what this film succeeds at is reminding us as viewers and filmmakers that we have complete freedom when making a film. Characters can do or say anything they want, regardless of motive, plot, or any logical frame of reference. The film is a canvas, fill it with completely disjointed scenes of bloodshed, murder, demon sex, and incoherent baby moaning!
If you're looking for an art shocker that is challenging and well made, watch Von Trier's "Antichrist" instead.
@Turtleproof Your characterization of this movie suggests you are a poor or close-minded judge of film. This movie is not a clusterfuck, but an artfully crafted narrative of a couple's descent into emotional and marital hell. Granted, the plot of the film is not to be judged literally, but as a surrealistic expression of the most passionate and irrational human emotions. And the Cannes Film Festival awarded the "incoherent baby moaning" you refer to with a best actress award for Isabelle Adjani.
Is this scary despite the weird wriggly monster thing? I am a huge horror fan and I'm looking for a bunch of new films to watch as I exhausted my collection a while ago.
@ailiepants Well its pretty disturbing. I'd put it in the catagory of horror movies like Jacob's Ladder, Tetsuo the iron man, Eraserhead, The Brood, Videodrome, Altered States, Sweet Movie, Antichrist, Naked Lunch. You know smart, dark, and surreal horror films.
I don't exactly understand what's going on in this movie, but it's stuck with me since the first time I saw it because of the incredible performances. Sam Neil is as good as he's ever been, which is to say impeccable. But Isabelle Adjani has, in my opinion, the most intense and unhinged portrayal of a mental collapse ever done by an acteess. Just scary.
I've been a horror movie collector for quite some time, and this stands as one of my favourites,it's unique,it has some really intense acting,a disturbing atmosphere, gore,a really fucked up monster, lots of symbolism and a ending that forces you to watch it more than once.
THis has become my favorite film with Velvet Goldmine . I thought this movie was excellent and loved Isabel Adjani in this film. i did not think it was possible for her to be more beautiful than when she was in The Tenant but she totally was! I burned a copy of this DVD and I will probably be holed up watching it tomorrow.
This film is great, still can't quite interpret it coherently though. I need to get my own copy purely for this purpose. I wonder if the Silent Hill games were at all influenced by this.
Believe it or not, but this award winning (Cannes, Fantasporto, BAFTA...) movie was actually one of the infamous "video nasties" in the UK in the mid 80s...it IS a small classic!
@Perstorp Yes, I just finished watching the 3 Disc Video Nasties documentary, and when I watched the in depth look at this film, and it's trailer, on Disc 3 I decided it was a must own for me. Sadly Vestron Video trimmed about 30 minutes out for their video release. I'm going to have to track it down on DVD, uncut hopefully!
wow....this looks like a weirdass movie. but even from that long trailer, i still have no idea what its about. and WTF is with the monster thing at the end??? that was, um, unexpected? lol. movie looks weird though, and whats weird is it doesnt even look like an 80's film, looks way later.
is an old cold war joke, not red, not capitalist but works for both of them. In this film, Berlin wall it's another character too and for those times, the film's end was something prophetical.
She looks like the chick from Antichrist.

It's a film that's a deliberate mind fuck.
From what I've heard it's pretty good, but I have yet to see it for myself.
I figure I'll look for it this weekend.
