I have an opinion. I think there is two different sides. One, he is losing some kind of external war/battle. Doesn't matter if it's him fighting an alien race or can't get a girlfriend, but it's something that's throwing his life in turmoil. Then there is an internal conflict with himself and his tempations. And God is telling him that if he gives into the lies of the "Rebel" (The Devil), then he cannot be saved. This song is one of my favourites.
