If some fans would put aside the stigma of being one from the "Rabin Era", TALK would be considered a CLASSIC YES MASTERPIECE for more than just a few of us.
@vivelavidarocka It is a Yes classic in spite of the squabbles of 'era purists'... and to be fair there are assholes on either side of that pointless argument.
It took me a long time to decide this, but this song really does deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as "And You And I." Beautiful, moving, brilliant.
On a cool crisp clear evening in a Southern California Amphitheater under stars near the end of Talk Tour and Trevor's departure from the Yes Franchise to his being his own boss. I was a witness to Rock History as we saw a bit more seasoned product than this begining show. It went start to finish with no tuning up, lacking a better word (flawless). Mario Guerrero and myself, at the end we help the venue staff break down chairs for that we were allowed to join the party Back Stage never forget it
benoit is an impersonater, not a musician... them having him make a cd is a joke. how this band is not in the hall of fame yet is just unbelievable. what do they have to do, walk on water? the harmonizing in this song is perfection...
Absolutely brilliant. Magnificent performance. To hear them pull this off live only confirms my belief these are some of the best musicians in rock and roll, ever.
Wonderful!! One of the best songs by Yes, surely the best song of the "Trevon Rabin YES". I can't listen to this song without crying, it's too much powerful and moving! I really love the part where they sing "So take your time..."!
i read it somewhere a couple of years ago. think it was mentioned in passing in one of the music trade magazines. but just now, i googled it and found that he was only engaged to chris' daughter carmen, but the marriage never happened. i stand corrected. i think...
i agree w/iyamni. i like trevor and steve both. arguing who's better is for 14 year old boys. this one has to be considered trevor's farewell masterpiece. you can tell jon really digs singing this one. trevor said in an interview that when jon heard the final, complete playback of this song in the studio that he had tears in his eyes and said it was the most beautiful piece of music he'd ever been involved in.
This Rabin v Howe crap is going on all over the fk'n net and it's 100% BULLSHIT.
Yes was the premiere progressive band before anyone ever heard of Rabin, but his talents brought them into a new age. It was musical symbiosis and that is what Jon always said: Yes is a musical ideal more than a specific group pf people.
Anyone who thinks Yes didn't began until Rabin is a fool, and anyone who thinks the only real Yes ended with Tormato is just as foolish.
I'm a Yes fan going back to their classic Yes lineup, back to their 2nd album when Steve Howe joined the group. And as much as I love the classic Yes band, I have to say that this is one of their best epics ever, and I don't know why it doesn't get the credit deserves. And Rabin should also be accredited with being an exceptional songwriter-performer.
Studio recording of endless dreams is one of the most underrated rock opi, it´s quit simple but pure pomp rock.
But this concert is awfull. I have the impression the stage is full of "new" haffners. Listen to the 90125 star ship trooper 16 min version ! This is a live Performance, or Yessongs or Welcome back my friends to the ..... ELP or the Gabriel Genesis.......
LOL! Squire might have simply been doing an altered fist-pump because he was holding a pick, but it looks like he's playfully flipping off Alan White at 1:46!
Yup, he's flipping Alan off. One of them, (and Chris obviously thinks it was Alan) screwed up an accent around 1:24. But it was first night of the tour so...
A friend of Mine wanted to take Me to a concert for a gift. We had traffic problems on a bus, arrived 3 minutes before the end, and were allowed to go in because it was almost ending. At least I saw them, which, for Me is as close as I'll ever get.
I enjoyed a lot this video. It brings back lots of good memories. The stage had a big screen and towers of speakers, at front left and right of the stage. The speakers came to life particularly with this epic song, since it gains from the fantastic effects. At some parts Sherwood, Andeson, Kaye and Ravin all played keyboards, in passages that I believe were imposible to reproduce live. Thanks thanks thanks YAMN for sharing this vid.
Isn't it obvious? The shining flying purple wolfhounds are the army helicopters in Vietnam. Sheesh. Sister Bluebird is...well, hell, that one's got me.
One of the all time very best Yes songs. Very under rated. Good album that deserves several listens before making your mind up about it. Great playing throughout. Trevor's voice blends so well with Jon's.
did you see youtube's new FUCKING crazy ass thing? when you type a comment, you can have an audio preview of what you typed, i need to go back and lol listen to all my gibberish, gawd, steven hawkins really needs a, lol, life, get well Jon!
Rabin's been doing soundtracks, You can find his bio on IMDB.
Trev was critical in putting Yes back on the map. He wrote some classic Yes tracks. HOWEVER ;-) Yes had classics long before Trev. Fragile, Close To The Edge, Topographic Oceans, Relayer, Going For The One. This was by far their most creative period. They influenced progressive music far more than any other group. No dis to Trev, but Chris and Jon are the original and essential Yes members. When they go, it may well be the end.
The "Talk" Album is awsome. I'm not a huge fan of the other albums but like select songs from them and have seen Yes 2 times and think Jon's voice is awesome (listen to him on the Kitaro 1992 album "Dream" if you get a chance...Incredible). I had tickets to this concert Tour in Vancouver Canada but it was cancelled in June 1994 because of poor ticket sales (too bad).
Want a *very* personal comment? I have been a Yesfan from wayback, all incarnations, all CDs, they are the soundtrack of my life. Talk came out in 1993, & I was still grooving to it when only brother, killed himself with a shotgun in 1994. Stuck in in his mouth and BOOM. Destroyed me, baby brother, and you too. Talk & Close to the Edge got me through that...no, I'm still going through that...fuck. I'm still close to the edge, you know? But this music kept me alive and nearly rational. Thanks 2 Yes
My sympathies for your loss. I've never experienced anyting like that but CTTE changed my life too. Back in the 70s Yes music gave me focus and made me decide to go to study music to better myself as a musician back when getting high was my primary preoccupation. It really saved me.
Talk has very moving cuts too, especially the section here "When the world brings you down..." I can definitely see how that would affect you.
Talk is often very moving, and so is CTTE.Those two albums go together, and no joke, the two together got me through the worst time of my life!
Want to know something strange? At that time I was into the habit of long nightime walks with headphones. Searching, you know? After the suicide of my brother? One night,I was crossing a bridge, listening to ABWH "Brother of Mine" and Jon was singing "...in the full moon".And I stopped and looked up--it was a full moon. Like Yes was always there. But why?
When they played here in Charlotte, this was the last song of the show, and a lot of us thought it would be the last we saw of Yes. Who knew they would keep going for another 10 years of touring? (Get well, Jon!)
And I was so looking forward to seeing them this year. Everybody should try and make it to the next tour. This band has beat the odds and the haters and critics to last through 4 major musical shifts. But all things must pass.
I need to be in a mass of fans singing along with "And You And I..." at least once more in my life. Ah, the magic.
Talk is unfortunately a harshly underrated album. It was by far the best Yes work during the more commercial Rabin intermezzo. Although Steve's wonderful guitar play is badly missing, the title song could also be on one of their groundbreaking albums from the 70's and the sequence around "Bring me back home" is for me one of their most emotional moments. Great to see them here, since they play the Talk songs more or less never.
I think Big Generator was more underrated even though it produced a couple hits. Talk was more cohesive for sure. BG was also closer to the classic Yes motif. "I'm Running" can easily stand alongside "..Sunrise" and "Awaken". In a way, all recent Yes is underrated as older fans tend to judge them by their 70s incarnation. I love Howe, his style is as integral to Yes as Chris&Jon, but he does not handle Rabin's material well. Except for a few nice cuts, Union was a disaster.
I always find the Union concerts as a resounding success. I've never heard the album and I'm actually scared to. But I've always enjoyed the numerous Union concert videos where they all seem to be getting along with even Trevor and Steve sharing a grin during I've seen all Good People.
I saw the Union show in Costa Mesa, It was probably the best they've sounded except for the 3 small things -1 the mikes weren't on when they opened with "...Disgrace" But they made a joke of it and started again. 2. Trevor overplays during the 'Eclipse" theme in "And You And I" drives me crazy. and 3 Steve got lost in "Mood For A Day".... stopped, stared up at the crowd, then smiled and started playing again. Everybody laughed. It was great fun and a lot of love from the crowd.
I always like mistakes, make things feel more friendly and makes the band more human. There's loads of complaints about Trevor overplaying on the classic Yes material. To me Steve frequently seems lost playing Mood for a Day, you watch his face and he seems to be thinking really hard about where he is.
I'm not a Trevor basher. He saved the band from extinction. It's just that one song I think he overplays. That particular break is so beautiful and Steve's slide always fit so perfectly that it make Rabin's agressive soloing seem inappropriate. Otherwise he's great. Can't say much for Steve doing Trevors stuff though. haha. I love him but...
What I like is when Jon forgets the opening of And You And I. Seen him do it twice. But of course I still love them. My favorite band of all time.
I've got the Symphonic Live DVD and when it comes to Owner of a Lonely Heart, Steve has this glazed expression on his face while Jon, Alan and Chris are grinning away and even the stand in keyboardist Tom Brislin seems to notice Steve's discomfort.
I've never had a problem with Trevor either. I'm an all rounder, except for Drama, and I've always seen it like this; All of them contributed to the band and if they weren't all different, Yes would've been the same from 1968 till now.
My deathbed regret will be missing the Symphonic Yes Tour. But I have the DVD and that'll do. I agree about Steve. He never hid his disagreemnts with Yes' direction, but Trevor deserves respect. He's doing film scores now. Search IMDB.
I also agree that each incarnation of Yes is valid, even the often dismissed Drama which is their "dancing with the spirit of the age" album and remarkable in that it was the only one without Jon. ABWH is also a great Yes album but Chris owns the name so ...
Agreed. All the more powerful because, as I understand it, Trev and Jon didn't get on so well during the first album, and Trev expressed frustration with Jon during the making of Big Generator which, IMO, is one of their best.
If some fans would put aside the stigma of being one from the "Rabin Era", TALK would be considered a CLASSIC YES MASTERPIECE for more than just a few of us.
