David Allan Coe is a great songwriter, but he had a bad habit of copying other people's songs and styles. This song he later admitted to stealing from Townes Van Zandt (If I Needed You). Both are great songs, but the original Townes song is superior.

Respectfully disagree with you, good sir. This is DAC pure country poetry. Like the best of DAC's work it exists on two levels, the carnal (laying [screwing] in a field of stone as well as the romantic (would you be buried beside me when we have lived our lives together). Tanya Tucker's version was the best selling version, but she appreciated DAC's work greatly. I notice that there is a Willie Nelson version. Got to listen to that too...
