@ehjones It probably was, but I immediately decided to turn and land - it took about 15 meters of height to turn and I still had some seconds to extend the flaps and the airbrakes... In gliders, once you decide for something you have to live with that decision, good or bad... there are no second chances..
@florinbaiduc True! In the UK protocol tends to be either land ahead or a mini-circuit (360) to land upwind. A 180 to land is frowned upon, but in Germany a teardrop circuit after a winch break seems to be the norm. Everything depends on the field and the conditions, of course.
Nice flying, but how many times can you expect to have a winch cable break in your lifetime. I know you practice the failure but is it a regular occurrance or did you just get unlucky?
Dude, I love your videos... When I reach the age limit, I'll start this gliding training.
This is awesome!
Also, flying is my only dream.

when the wheel touches the ground, it really sound like entering a tunnel.

had it once break at 70 meters, did a 180 and landed with backwind - now that was a cable break - less fun than this one.

@florinbaiduc Wasn't there room to have landed ahead?

a slip and slide at the end right?
like the air canada 767?
cool
masterpilot94 3 years ago
Forward slip, yes. IIRC the captain of that flight was a glider pilot as a youth, and picked up the technique there.

cable break my arse! More like a launch :#)
peanuts2105 3 years ago
Yeah, if that was a cable break you must get VERY high on a launch! and anyway you at nearly finished the roundover so it was more of a launch!

interesting recovery lol

Looks like the cable broke at the right altitude to release it anyway! lol

In a lifetime? No idea.
Well, since I got my license in 2004, I had 2 cable breaks. And I'm looking forward to my next one, since it's quite fun - if you know what to do.

hahaha...my first one...the flight reference cards floated up in front of my face when i pushed forward....couldn't see what I was doing!

It's relatively common. I've never personally had one, but you might get 1 or 2 a month at a busy club?
whiternoise2 2 years ago
I have......... on my first launch!

You train for it, you keep a sharp eye on where you are while you're going up and where you'd go if it breaks. If it breaks, you follow your plan.
This is not to say it isn't a very, very exciting thing when it happens the first time outside of training.

@xl447 regarding cable breaks, i have had 75 flights and out of that 3 were cable breaks, thats on steel cable.
