  • Jim McKay was to The U.S. Olympic Team what Harry Caray was to The Cubs,What Ray Scott was To The Packers,What Jack Buck was to The Cardinals,What Chuck Thompson was to The Orioles, what Mel Allen was to the Yankees, and What Ernie Harwell was to the Tigers.

  • I agree with you on Susan. She reminds me of Edith Prickley from SCTV but the other two aren't that bad IMHO. Sterling brings some life to the game.

  • I'll say it again: Jim, almost single handedly, brought the obscure sports to the masses here in the US.

He made those sports IMPORTANT in a way they would never have been, but for his input, his championing of the participants.

"Alexieve," the soviet weightlifter, for example owes a large portion of his own notoriety to McKay, personally.

For me, and with Jim McKay's passing, the world of "sport" has certainly now diminished now, and quite largely too.

    Jim will certainly be missed.

  • A true gentleman he is, as always.

  • I still get choked up over his death but he led a great life. Truly will be missed

  • You know, I'm 51 years old, and grew up watching ABC's Wide World of Sports. Jim McKay introduced me to so many different sports that had no other television coverage back then. Now, so many years later, as I browse through old, memorable sporting events here on youtube, its really striking how often those clips are accompanied by the narrative of Jim McKay. Feels like he's still here ... and still showing me that wonderful, wide world of sports.

    Thank you, Jim.

  • Jim, You were a big part of my Saturday afternoons as a little kid. I was too young to remember your words from Munich, I was barely 2 years old. But I'm just one of many whose lives you have touched with your journalistic brilliance and professionalism. Part of my childhood died with you. Thank you, Jim, for all the memories. I pray that God continues to keep your family under the Shadow of His wing. Rest in Peace, friend. --Sharon

  • It was so stupid to cancel ABC's Wide World of Sports. It was still doing well in the ratings.

  • Jim McKay and Wide World of Sports on Saturday afternoons was a staple of my childhood and youth. It was, along with living with three brothers, a big part of how I learned about various sports during that time. Thanks to all view my tribute to share memories and mourn his passing.
