It makes me feel so many things - light, dark, poignant sadness, exultation, visions of the story (of Tristan and Isolde)...it's not ordinary pleasure or happiness, it's something else!
I'm in awe and inspired by the coming together of composer, interpreter and performer here in consummate unity. This is what music is all about for me - to make me feel what is behind the notes, what is behind the rising and falling of a phrase - sheer beauty.
It is difficult to surpasse this music. It defines clutures and eras. It is of the highest order. It is, as is much of great art, deeply beautiful and grotesque at the same time. For all of the attacks on Richard Wagner, he has here succeeded here in raising German Art to the highest of levels.
Karajan seems very resigned. The "distinguished" event (death), to quote Henry James, I am guessing is on his mind. The performance is outstanding. Norman is of the same qaulity as L. Price in this repertoire.
Dear Cagin, once ago, I saw another version of this video, and he said:
"Bald ist alles zuende". Which means, soon everythng will be over. And his wife replies: "Nein, ehrlich nicht. Le comence."
Its wonderful to see this video. He knew this was his last Liebestod. And everytime I see hem kissing Jessye's hands at the end can't help. I cry.....
Indeed. But I can't help thinking of Karajan's unforgettable own words in a TV documentary, when he said (I am paraphrasing): "Death cannot be the end of everything. It cannot be, it wouldn't be fair, it would be senseless. I have so much to give yet. Surely I will go on in some way." The programme ended with an beautiful shot of an eagle gliding among mountain tops.
Indeed, it WOULD be senseless.
Let's hope it's just our limited eyes what prevents us from seeing the greater truth.
This is clearly one of the 'miracles of art' that occur from time to time; when all the players are in form and sympathy. Other examples are Renee Flemings' Charpentier at Jimmy Levine's 25th Gala at the met or Soderstrom/Flicka/Battle singing the Rosenkavalier 'Trio' at the Met Centential Gala... There are many more we can argue about -- but this Liebestodt is beyond mere words.
why people who upload this video usually call it as "the last concert by karajan" ? This is not his last concert and indeed has nothing to do to be the last concert of the maestro. Even this is not his last wagner concert.

Cagin:
Yes, it was the end of the Karajan era, but only on the physical plane.
Music makers like him go on in our lives and teach and entertain us, still.
Today, I see the same spirit, drive, and pure joy in music making from Dudamel and others who have inherited his legacy.

Yes, and then she says, "Tu commences" i.e., "you're beginning." I understand the conversation to be:
Karajan says: 'the end'
Eliette says: non, no, no, it's a new beginning.
I think this conversation was included to suggest it was the end of something.

Cagin:
At the beginning, he says in the car "Fine" and Eliette says to him "No, no, no." It is as if he understood this to be near the end, but you say, no.
Pray tell, what performances was Maestro Karajan able to deliver after this one?
