  • She is certainly better than mary lou retton

  • So graceful and so clean.

  • wow!!

  • So beautiful, perfect 10 from me!:)

  • for me, Mary Lou's floor routine was superior to this. but agreed on the gold robbery overall. Ecaterina was more consistent, fluid, and overall less-shaky than Reton. how could you get gold in all the individual events and then get silver for AA? pity, that's how :P but if i ever meet her (kinda unlikely), i'll let her know she was the gold in my book :)

  • I am a gymnastics coach and it's a double front. I went and got safety certified to be a coach and we learned a lot of things. I went on to coach All Around and want to coach a kid to the Olympics one day. I love Gymnastics more than anything. Lets see if anyone knows what this skill is called instead of it being a giant swing into. its like a arabian half twist sratel when you catch . over look my spelling.

  • ROBBED OF THE GOLD !

  • Misto!

  • I lack the ability to see how this did not get a ten, scores were rather inflated at these games, Mary lou's all around floor anyone?

  • A beautiful dancer, a great tumbler, that is artistry at its best.

  • what is with every romanian playing count down racers

  • Foarte frumos.

  • Didn't Cristina Bontas use similar music to this in 1991 when she won the world title on floor?

  • They resurrected segments of this music for Milo, the next time they came to an American Olympics.

  • újabb magyar...

  • this may sound silly, but is Ekaterina also a Romanian name, or was Kati of Russian descent?

  • no.. she is ethnic Hungarian and her originalname is Szabó Katalin...Kati is a hun. nickname to Katalin...

in 80's there was a dictatorship in Romania who din't like Hungarian names so the officials simply changed it to a romanian name...

  • @kurblee same with Emilia Eberle aka Gertrude Emilia Eberle & Melita Ruhn aka Melita Rühn; both of the german minority in ROM...

  • I think the judges were generous back then. Mary Lou didn't deserve a 10 on her floor and this girl didn't deserve a 9.95. The form on her double back and full in are terrible with the legs apart.

  • What do you think about Nastia Liukin's form on her double tucks? It has been almost 25 years and with all the progressions in the sport the current Olympic AA Champion displays some of the worst form on double tucks. Legs widely separated and questionable toe point. At least Szabo could claim that the double tuck and full-in were originated in the late 1970s and for her they were a work in progress.

  • @NaomisCellPhone Nastia Liukin has NEVER done a double tuck. Never seen one from her. EVER. or piked double. Neither. And I followed her WHOLE career.

  • @justinmjb WTF????? she does a front double tucked ! what the hell are you talking about !!

  • @bertera1614 READ Naomis's comment that I was replyin to.She ask."What do u think of Nastia's form on double tucks.A double tuck to ANY gym fan is known to be a double back. A"Double front"is referred to as rotating foward.Proof is in the rest of Naomis's comment and last sentence! Szabo NEVER did a double front so u can't compare her to Nastia's.Just as Nastia never did a double back to compare to Szabo.U BOTH R fools & don't know terms in gym OR wut each gymnast did for tumbling runs.

  • @justinmjb double tucks are double tucks. it doesnt matter if it is front or back. it is the same, if yo think a double tuck is only a double back so, you're wrong.

  • @bertera1614 lol. um okay . walk up to any elite gymnast or gym fan for that matter and ask them what they think of when they hear the words " double tuck" and what it refers too and 99 percent will say a double back flip.... Then ask them what do they call 2 rotating foward salto's and they will say " front double". I gaurantee it. Your missing the point anyway on all this. Nastia NEVER did a double tuck as I stated or any back tumbling for that matter. Go learn your terms:) Have fun!

  • @bertera1614 Again it's in the reference point. Of course it can be double tuck front or back. But ANY REAL gym fan or gymnast would know how to call it. If u walked up to someone in a gym and said " can u do a double tuck" I gaurantee you NONE of them are going to ask foward or backwards. lol. Becuz that is NOT the term used for front tumbling in gym. Yes it could be stated that a tuck is a tuck. But again, u must not really know gym or be a true fan or u would know. duh... bye bye

  • @bertera1614 I honestly can't believe I'm even having this conversation with someone. LOL. It'd be like my mother asking me about gymnastics. LOL. As in NO clue and u must NOT follow the sport or terms on what things are called. Haha. It's not a problem and scientifically u ARE correct but in the gym world u are FAR from correct on what things are called. A double tuck foward is called a FRONT DOUBLE OR DOUBLE FRONT. It is NEVER reffered to as a double tuck. LOL.

  • @bertera1614 I bet u call a full turn a full pivotte? lol. What else can u tell me about gymnastics and its terms and such? lol. I'd LOVE to hear it. Haha. It's always a hoot to hear the uneducated talk about gymnastics. I did gym for 13 years and have been following it for 21 years.... Have a good day:)

  • Overall Mary Lou had a better routine. This one seemed very contrived what with the music and all. But still, the dance skills are excellent and hey the tumbling is quite good for 1984! Comparing their performances is hard because I think there is less footage of the 1984 games out there than any other Olympics. I'd love to compare all 12 of their routines to see how I think the results should have went.

  • Cute, but I admit it didn't grab me the way Mary Lou Retton's did. The Battle Hymn of the Republic? WTF?

  • I have always thought that Ms. Szabo should have won the all round gold that year, the politicalt atmosphere of that time trumped fairness during this competition. If you ever get an opportunity to compare their performances (Szabo, Retton) you'll see what I mean. This was disappointing, an I was rooting for the Wheaties girl but Szabo should have made that her 5th gold medal of the games in L.A.

  • MARY LOU! MARY LOU! Mary lou's was more powerful PLUS her dance was great! I think her dance showed confidence and such sharp movement! Her tumbling was also alot harder. A great routine by Ecaterina though

  • Totally agree. Even Milo's routine to this same music in 1996 was more interesting, and that was far from a barnburner.

  • I disagree. Szabo never had as much spark in her gymnastics as, say, Omelianchik, but I think her routine was entertaining and fun.

  • Face value, much more visually appealing than Retton's floor, with a great dance variety and really unique elements (plus there is that very American nod with the music choice), but really, it's tough to beat Mary Lou's power. Retton got a higher score for her floor because it was a great show of power, and had a higher shock value for the judges, the same reason that Nadia got really high scores during the '76 Olympics.

  • Retton music was a very popular romanian song, its funny that a romanian picked american music and an americam picked romanian music,i like Szabo's routine better, beautiful lines, elegant and strong exercise

  • it's not that funny. Most likely the music was picked by Bela Karoly that had just defected Romania back than.

  • She was better on this event than Mary Lou. You're supposed to dance, which she did, as well as having great tumbling. Mary Lou was one of the first of the "stand there and move your arms and call it dancing" gymnasts.

  • I'm not sure why people are thumbing you down on this. It's not rude and it's just a well-expressed OPINION. I too think Szabo's routine had a bit more entertainment value to it and I love her Y-scale turn!

  • Yeah, I know. I also love her half-cartwheel-to-splits thingy (I don't know what it's called) :P). It happens at 35 seconds.

  • Ecaterina Szabo (THE ACTUAL 1984 OLYMPIC AA CHAMPION) was so appealing and vibrant. It was obvious that she was a true performer in every sense of the word. Her FX was choreographed with the Los Angeles Olympic audience in mind. This was a very vigorous and lively performance!

  • If Katie hadn't fallen on bars in team finals, she would have won.

She wasn't robbed. SHE messed up and SHE ruined her chances of getting that medals. It's very sad, and you may believe she deserved it, but she did not PERFORM like an AA champion by falling. It is pure numbers, not a conspiracy or anything.

  • You conveniently forget that Mary Lou Retton's scores were inflated throughout the competition. Her compulsories, UB and especially her BB were ridiculously overscored.

One routine does not make an AA competition. Technical finesse, engaging performances and artistry do. Ecaterina Szabo should have won the AA.

  • @elamantebilingue Very well said.

  • @elamantebilingue Athletes from the country where the Olympics are held always have scoring advantage.........that being said, I think Szabo would have had to have won the AA if she had not had the fall on her bars landing. I do miss that the AA is now a "new life" event. All Around means just that, All Around. ALL of the routines scores should count from the team competition (and as boring as compulsories could get they served a purpose) & be averaged into the actual AA score.

  • @elamantebilingue Exactly!!!! Dammit, someone seen the same shit I seen. I remember this, I was a kid, but when I look at it now, EXACTLY. Mary Lou Retton was strength and power, and she did her thing, but Szabo had that extra somethin in there. Cant explain it, Szabo had it.

  • not nearly as powerful of a tumbler as Mary Lou but her dance technique, flexibility and style are significantly better

  • What a great floor routine by Kati Szabo. Especialy after the power failure just before she was due to start. Kati had to wait at least ten minutes in total darkness before the power was restored. I have my suspicions about that "accident". Anyway Kati came away with a total of 4 Golds and 1 Silver. Which showed that she was not only the best gymnast but the best performer in the whole games.

  • This is the team competition, not EF.

  • McNamara's floor included a TUCKED full in an a double TWIST dismount....talk about inflated

  • A double twist was very acceptable in '84. It was still being done in '92. Perefectly honest I prefer Szabo over McNamara but I still like McNamara

  • What you'd call old-school. She wasn't in Mary Lou's league as a tumbler & wasn't quite, say, a Caslavska, as a floor artist. But very nice. Score inflation really was a huge problem during the '80s, wasn't it?

  • Lots of fun, and so well-executed. Great tumbling.
