@hAppybuNnyboo1 You know it's really been way to long since I've read this book. I can tell you that they do explain this more as the books go on. I think it's the third book that really goes into detail about the past.
@wickedlyunique I'm not sure, it all depends on the author's interpretation of the word. She never introduces any female magic users into the story, so I can't be sure. However, most often when ppl use the word warlock as she does, they are often just using it to refer to a male magic user. Now she does have another series coming out about warlocks and perhaps she will have a female in that one.
I'm so glad that my thoughts mirrored yours :D I love it when ppl can relate to what I say.
@NephilimLake I am not familiar with that. I just looked it up to kinda see what it is about and it seems to have potential. Do you recommend it? I am currently reading The Demon King which was recommended by a subscriber and that is good so far-- can't wait to make a review for it! Maybe I'll read the Adhorsen series next, if you think I'll like it.
Tomorrow at school me and a three other people need to do an "original" book discussion about A million little pieces by James Frey for our class. We need to discuss language and style etc. and not so much characters so our idea was to do like a talkshow but it is very difficult to talk about style then.. So what should we do now, does anyone have an idea for us?
I think the talk show idea is doable. You could make one person the host and interview each other on what you think of the language and style. You can even take it a step further by saying that the person being interviewed is a literary expert or best selling author of (insert fake book name here). Maybe you could make a joke out of it by going Jerry Springer style and having the two experts take swings at each other over their different view points. Just some thoughts....
you know what i just thought, isabelle reminds me of rosalie from twilight. b.c they are both beautiful and how rosalie was first ment as a gf to edward but ended up just being a sister and isabelle and jace has had thoughts of being together.
Yes they are similar in that fashion. I hated the way Rosalie hated Belle for not wanting to stay human and that she was very ungrateful for what she had. At least Isabelle isn't that bad. For the most part she's pleasant to Clary. There is only one scene where she is almost out of line with Clary, but that doesn't happen until a later book.
I think Jace is a different sort of love interest. He is certainly far from perfect most of the time. In fact, he's kind of an ass at times.
yeah its true that isabelle is a lot nicer to her than rosalie and it bothered me so much in the twilight saga how rosalie changed so quickly to help bella in the last book.
and the guys are much different but i like jace so much more! even if he is an ass, i like his personality much more than edwards, and just the way they think and stuff. also i like his name way more :)
something that really bothered me about the books was her name being clary. at first i just read it as clar like clair but spelled different. but then i realized it and i dont like it. and it did remind me of twilight how their names are isabelle and alec, but they fit pretty well in these books. i just bought the second book so im gonna start reading it today and watch your book discussion! i cant wait to see how it goes! :D
I can't remember what I said in this discussion, but I did the same thing as you with Clary's name, I went for pages and pages before I realized that it was ClarY, not ClarE. Of course at that point was I already attached to the name, Clare, and it took some time before I was able to adjust. If I had been writing the book, I would have introduced her as Clarissa and then adjusted the reader to the unusual name of Clary. But you're right the other names fit the characters perfectly.
you could look at the word "warlock" she may have known the whole oath breaker business. Downworlders are suppose to bad inferior beings so she called him a warlock because every one else did because he was a downworlder!
It's possible. Unfortunately most ppl wont see it that way. Especially since she has more books coming out about magic users and she refers to them all as Warlocks. It doesn't bother me so much any more, btw. I said what I had to say about it in this video and now I've moved on. If, after reading her next books, I feel the need to fix the misinformation, then I will, but otherwise I recognize that it is just a product of fantasy books. Fiction can be what you want it to be after all :)
i just finished reading the first book and i really can't wait for the next one! like you and everyone else i was extreamly disapointed by them being siblings. im still thinking they aren't though ;) that would just ruin it. its the main love action in the book!
while reading the book i didn't quite pick up on alec and magnes hooking up. i saw that magnus likes alec espically when he said "call me?" lol but i read a detailed summary-when i was done- and it said that and it surprised me!
I think you'll like the second one. It has some interesting twists and turns just like the first. I liked that Magnus and Alec hooked up. I thought it made for an interesting side story. I loved Magnus in these books. The more he appeared in the books, the more I liked him.
I hope that when you're done with City of Ashes, you watch my discussion video on it. I look forward to your opinion!
I'm gunna say yes, definitely more for men then Twilight. The romance in this book is important, but it isn't the central point to the story. This series also has a TON of action. As soon as the book starts you're right into it. Not like in Twlight where you have several chapters before you even find out that Edward is a Vamp. Within the first few pages the main ppl are introduced along with all the craziness. Working at B&N, I see a lot of guys buying this book too. I recommend.
I just got through reading it todat and it has become my favorite book. I was so upset when they turned out to be brother and sister. I love Jace & Clary as a couple. I didn't even want to finish. I am still upset. I've only read the 1st chapter of City of Ashes though. I hope it won't leave me disappointed at the end.
I was pissed when the sibling thing was revealed! I'm mean livid! I was ready to drop the whole series and condemn Cassandra Clare from ever residing on my bookshelves, but the fans of the books insisted that I kept reading the series. They said that it would all workout in the end and that I would not be disappointed. At the time I wasn't sure what they had meant, but I'm VERY glad that I listened.
I am soooo with u on this! I loved these books but was so ready to burn them and say I hated them if things hadnt of ended up the way the way they did! lol (Love ur "other" personality in the discussion! Great job.
lol When I read your comment about my "other" personality, I had no idea what you were talking about and had to rewatch it. I had completely forgotten that I had done that lol. I'm such a dork! ;)
Hey i agree when I first found out clary and jace were brother and sister i screamed NOOOO WHY!!!!!!? But then i remeber star wars episode 4, which for thos who do not know it was the first one made back in the 70s anyways luke and leia kissed before they found out the were relasted, but i guess we will see were it goes in the series as im on book 2 now
I thought the book was really good...besides the whole Clary and Jace being related. When i read that i was like...Why.lol, but other than that the book was good. And your right it does kinda relate to Twilight. But its all good cause I Love Twilight as well!!!!
Oh man, the ending was suspenseful. I had guessed that Cassandra was gunna reveal them as siblings and that put me into a frenzy to get to the end to find out the truth. I really didn't think she would go that far. lol Boy, was I wrong. When that happened, I was pissed. I was about to drop the whole series and not finish it, but other insisted that I keep going and I'm glad they did.
There is no such thing as original ideas, only ideas made original. You can quote me on that ;) That is why we can find similarities with these books and Twilight. No matter what you read, you can always relate it back to something else you've read. My dad, for example, has this habit of finding similarities between other movies and Star Wars. Sometimes he even insists that they stole a scene from SW lol.
yesss i was going to drop the whole series as well but then i changed my mind.lol. I just bought the second book and started reading it.I only got to chapter 3 so far but its good.
She does? I don't remember there being any female magic users in the books. Honestly, I'm not surprised. She probably uses it as a replacement word for Mage and the like.
You're welcome and I really hope you liked the review :) Thanks for commenting!
Ya know, I think I remember reading that in the description for that book. Even though she uses the word incorrectly, I'm really looking forward to reading more of her books.
1. You dog is adorable!! 2. I have read all of the books, and I loved them!! I think they're waaaay better than Twilight, I never really noticed before, but they are kinda of alike.. But still I love the series, and I think they're making a movie? Anyone have any answers on that?
1. Thank you :) 2. Me too. I don't know if I like Twilight or COB better, but I really enjoyed them both. I don't know if they're are going to make it into a movie or not. I just watched a video with the author and she did mention that there has been some interest in adapting the books to a movie format, but she says that no contracts have been signed at this point. I'm sure they'll be turned into movies though. It just might take a few years.
I just finished reading this book and I think it was pretty good. For me it started off alittle slow but as you read on it was really good. Plenty of action throughout and some twist and turns especially the last few chapters. Clary/Jace does resemble Luke/Leia in Star Wars, I saw those comments down there and that's exactly what I was thinking when I found out about that. Oh I'm so glad to have you in the club--officially! Isn't that twist with Jace and Clary just crazy? I cant wait for you to finish City of Ashes, I just know you'll love that video lol. I think the best part about these books was that they were almost nonstop action and you know I love that :D
Yay officially lol. Yeah that twist was crazy, kinda caught me by surprise. I'm in the middle of City of Ashes right now so I should be able to comment on that soon. Yup yup I know you love action :D and it has plenty of that. Can't wait to see the City of Ashes video you have up lol
hehe. The Discussion video for City of Ashes will be posted within the next few days-- maybe even sooner. The end of the month is approaching quickly! I hope you subscribe and join in the discussion :D
I just finished City of Bones. I thought it was really good and I look forward to reading City of Ashes. Actually the review by S.Meyer on the cover turned me off a bit. I was really disappointed in how the TW series ended. I think that the Mortal Instrument series is going to be much better than S.Meyer's books. Ya, that thing bugged me too, and I thought imprinting was gross. Unlike imprinting in TW, hopefully that won't be a recurring, acceptable thing in the next two books.

Wait, what thing bugged you too? Imprinting didnt really bother me too much, but I hated the ending to Breaking Dawn. It was so anti-climatic. I really wanted to see Bella kick some ass. Oh well, that series is done and over. I think the mortal instruments will have an awesome ending! I loved City of Ashes even more then the first. I'll be posting that discussion at the end of the month and I hope you comment on that too :D I look forward to your opinion!
lol Love the Star Wars reference. I get what you mean, but it was definitely more devastating to find that Jace and Clary were siblings.
Personally, I think S. Meyer ending Breaking Dawn the way she did, because by leaving it open like that, she allows herself the chance to add more books to the series. But still, the serious lack of fighting was a disappointment. Not like in The Mortal Instruments series, everyone is getting the crap beat out of them lol-- Well, so far.
NOOO they are siblings! damit i knew i shudent have read the comments! stupid me! i just started reading it, oooh nooo, i bet they find that out like right at the end of it right? so in all the romantic scnes ill be gagging, wen ever1 else hu read it will b elike oh wow!, oh no
Oh no, you read the comments :-/ Bummer, but trust me-- not all is as it seems. If you really intend on reading the books you'll be happy and surprised a lot.
GREAT BOOK! The language Cassandra used was amazing!
Like in twilight, you were already so introduced to how amazing edward is that you dont really think anything should happen between bella and jacob. But with Clary and Simon you actually think like maybe something could happen their. Especially if Simon became a part of the world as you said in your video!!
I definately vote to read City of Ashes as the next book! I want to find out why mrs. lightwood wants to talk to Jace about!
I will be posting a video on which book we'll be reading next in just a few minutes. Make sure you watch it :) Thanks for voting too!
I'm glad that you decided to read the book with us! The book was good enough that despite the insest thing, once my anger passed, I wanted to keep going. I just know there has to be a twist coming up. Some how, Cassandra's gunna pull a rabbit out of her hat and Clary and Jace wont be related any more.
I thought the book was pretty good, better than i thought it would be lol ( i borrowed it off my friend cause i didnt want to buy it) lol.
First of all the whole thing between Jace and Clary is horrible. Like i don't believe that they are brother and sister at all really. either clary is not his daughter or jace is not his son i dunno lol
and yeah about what Paulakrontz said about the whole love tirangle, I agree.
Although I like Simon, at this point he doesnt really have me pulling for him. However, I was torn between Edward and Jacob. Edward had my vote, but Jacob could love just as fiercely and passionately and that really had my attention. Simon's just too bland right now. Now, when he shot that bow to kill that demon-- that was hot! I loved him then lol!
That twist ending really killed it for me. I was ready to walk away from the whole series, but everyone kept saying to stick with it. Having finished the second book last night-- I'm SOOOO glad that I did!
I like a love triangle cuz it makes things exciting, but although Simon would make a could starter boyfriend, he just isnt terribly exciting. He seems to lack the passion I want to see. Thanks for watching and commenting!
I know! When Valentine was explaining how Jace was his, there was just too many ways in which he could be lying. I think that when Clary's mom wakes up, that maybe she'll be able to debunk Valentine's words. I thought it was interesting how Valentine seemed more attached to Jace in the end, then he did Clary. This could mean several different things, but I thought it was strange.
Yeah! It's good. I've been reading basically nonstop since I started today.
So, do you think this vid was too long? I tried to keep it short, but I also wanted to touch on a range of topics to encourage discussion. Even though I cut a lot out, it was still 10 min. When you were watching it, did you get bored or wish it was shorter?
EXACTLY!!!! Who knows though, maybe Cassandra's got another twist waiting for us. In all honesty even when Valentine starts telling his version I get confused on who to believe. lol If this was real, I'd probably completely fall for him and end up in the circle.
Well, I wasnt allowed to move onto book 2 till this video was posted, but that was a few days ago and I'm currently on chapter 8. So despite some of my text comments, I do know some of the things that happen, but I am forbidden to reveal any of it till after the next discussion vid. So if you stick with me till the end of the month, you'll hear my opinions then.
I completely agree on Hodge!!! I didnt see him being the bad guy. I actually kept picturing Buffy's mentor in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I had this warm connection to him and that he would always be the one the kids could go too for help and answers. Instead he is the true definition of Warlock, he betrayed them for his own weak insecurities.
About the warlock thing, I've read that "Oath Breaker" is what the word meant and when she used it in her book, it kept confusing me. I wanted to make sure it was clear for others. I agree with what you said about names and the imagination stalling. In my own books, I've struggled with that. It seems like there just isnt any good names left. I like that demons in the story were from other worlds and no necessarily from hell, it creates for more possibilities.
hehe well, I dont really want Jace to be gay, but I definitely dont want him ending up with Isabelle (she's not a favorite of mine). I can see her dying or maybe Alec (he's kinda the loner and it would be sad). I do want Clary and Simon to shine as a couple. At least for a lil while and then Clary needs someone a lil more exciting. I will not lie, I'm still holding out that Jace is not Valentines son. I know, it's unlikely, but I really want them together.
Yes, that's the whole point to this video. That's why at the end I tell ppl to comment and reply to each others comments, so that we can get a discussion rolling, hopefully. I'll have to make sure that's more clear next time. Just dont spoil book 2 or 3.
im kinda comfuesed on the sorty just a little,
im not sure what the circle was about, or why valentine was evil?
can you help me out?
overall the book was amazing i loved it!

I meant "Unlike imprinting in TW"

Wait, what thing bugged you too? Imprinting didnt really bother me too much, but I hated the ending to Breaking Dawn. It was so anti-climatic. I really wanted to see Bella kick some ass. Oh well, that series is done and over. I think the mortal instruments will have an awesome ending! I loved City of Ashes even more then the first. I'll be posting that discussion at the end of the month and I hope you comment on that too :D I look forward to your opinion!

The Clary, Jace hook up thing in the book. It kind of reminded me of Star Wars. lol
I wish we would seen Bella kick some ass too. Instead everyone pretty much just had tea and cookies, then went home.

lol Love the Star Wars reference.

Thank you, I like my musical tastes as well lol.

In all honesty even when Valentine starts telling his version I get confused on who to believe. lol If this was real, I'd probably completely fall for him and end up in the circle.

lol Working in a movie store, I've seen a lot of bad movies, so I feel for you :)

Instead he is the true definition of Warlock, he betrayed them for his own weak insecurities.
lindsaylou04 2 years ago

So, go on, what are your thoughts :D
