How did you slow the footage down to 2%? When I was testing out some of my own video in FCP X I was stuck at predetermined intervals such as 50%, 25%, 10% etc. Thanks.
Can anyone help me with the optical flow please.? I made this video in final cut X and during the optical flow there are black bars trembling on the sides.. Watch at 1:13
Can anyone help me with the optical flow please.? I made this video in final cut X and during the optical flow there are black bars trembling on the sides.. Watch at 1:13..thanks guys
@F1NNAZ This is because the program "optical flow" uses an algorithm to analyze your clip frame by frame and build new synthetic frames with respect to the actual frames of real video. The bees wings beet faster than the camera's shutter speed is able to pick up, therefore, the program sees no change in the pixels generated in between frames, so it does not know what to do other than to make a blur to match what is already a blur in each single frame.
Wow the bumblebee was a great nature shot. Coupled with the music it reminded me of something I would've seen on a Discovery Channel commercial. I can picture the big D and then the rest of the title appearing right now
The footage wouldn't look that choppy if you had shot the footage with a higher shutter speed than 60fps. A higher shutter speed makes it easier for the software to generate frames inbetween.
@pcfreak1992 Shutter speed and FPS are not the same. 60fps is the max for the 60D (and every consumer camera I know), so I was stuck with that. I used a shutter speed of 1/125", but did experiment with speeds up to 1/1000". The software actually made a lot of "chop" with the high shutter rate (which makes sense since there was more time between frames). After some more testing after this video I think a shutter speed of about 1/400" is the sweet spot for smooth motion and good detail at 60fps.
@MattsMacintosh I was going to guess that your camera gave you 1/125 shutter speed when you did 60i. It typically will double your frames per second as a rule of thumb. Thank your for saying 1/400 is "the sweet spot." I was actually going to ask. I don't shoot with a DSLR, but I do have a camcorder that gives you manual control over such things, and I wasn't sure what shutter speed to choose. Thank you, and have a blessed day!
Apple really outdid itself with Optical flow, I find it smoother than twixtor in some situations. But, because theres no customisable settings for it, (you just click optical flow) I think im gonna be sticking to twixtor. Nice Vid
@GregMcCahon Yep, completely agree with you. I think for quick stuff Optical Flow is great for just the "single click and done" setup, but if I was trying to do something more polished I'd probably stick with Twixtor as well.
heyy matt what camera ae re you using to film this, and also i was wondering what camera should i buy if i want to take studio pictures with? like a photo shoot? Thanks!
hey matt i just would like to know, which video camera did you use to make this video, and btw i just bought a samsung hmx h200 and im really good at video editing and i love making videos for school projects, will my camera be good for doing green screen effects muzzle fire etc. thanks. And is it a good camera to use when doing major stuff and i always use colour corrections for the nice atmosphere, i use film magic pro for the colour corrections, i think u've heard of it :P ;). reply please :)
@Shahbaz7371 I put all my camera info in the description. For what you want to do I don't think the camera will matter as much as the post-production/editing part.
@MattsMacintosh ah ok thanks, one more thing alot of people are saying there is no difference between 720p HD and 1080p HD, is that true? Is there like a major difference between the video quality, thanks reply please :).
@OfficialDJL 60i is actually 30p , it is always better to go with p(progressive) over i(interlaced) so to answer your question 60i and 30p will be the same
I've lurked and watched pretty much all your vids and every video you make is exceptionally impressive and first class, not to mention informative and to the point.
im not the one to give tips here im actually starting out... but i think if you would have shot in a higher shutter speed it would have looked a lot better like 1/1000 or 1/2000
@OfficialDJL Progressive signals send the entire frame at once whereas the interlaced signal is sent in two intervals. The first half of an image is sent, then, the next half is sent in the next scan completing the single frame.
@MattsMacintosh srry but i really didnt understand that, haha:) well i know 60p can make things slower, so can 60i? Sorry, you probably think I'm dumb.
@OfficialDJL Of course I don't think you're dumb. You just haven't learned some things yet. So the "60" refers to the frame rate, so yes, both 60i and 60p can be slowed easily.
@seongapple It definitely helps to shoot at higher frame rates (I did this at 60fps), but Optical Flow is designed to make any footage look better is slow mo, so you definitely can use your handycam.
@caetanosmc I did some test with that and it didn't work so well. I got a lot of "chop" after the optical flow process. There is probably a sweet spot somewhere between the blur and the choppiness, so I'll keep experimenting.
@TechJamieTech He puts them there to create a faux super-widescreen effect. It's just for the coolness, really. 8) The video is really 16:9 like the Youtube player.
Somehow everytime i use slow motion in final cut pro in never comes out as clean as this.. any tips? i shoot using the canon t2i

Notice anyone how the bee's wings are flapping at a fast rate still even in slow motion?
F1NNAZ 6 months ago
@F1NNAZ This is because the program "optical flow" uses an algorithm to analyze your clip frame by frame and build new synthetic frames with respect to the actual frames of real video. @Cineman2011 I know ahaaa :') It's more to do with the fact that I know that shows it's fake slow motion as you can see by the wings on the bees :)

@MattsMacintosh:
Casio and other camera manufacturers have higher than 60fps on consumer cameras.
But it will be on lower resolutions.
My Casio EX-F1 can do 300fps at 512X384 pixels, 600fps at 432X192 pixels, and 1200 fps at 336X96 pixels.
The 300fps shots have OK quality, and the 600fps is also not too bad but the 1200fps is something I use just for fun sometimes.
Would be cool to test a 300fps shot with Optical Flow.

@Shahbaz7371 720P is not as sharp as 1080P. I would recommend primes if you shoot alot of 60P. Primes are much more sharper than lenses with zooms.
SKarsteinX 7 months ago
@MattsMacintosh Yeah but 60i is interlaced, which would cause more motion blur and will make slow motion worse.
