  • Somehow everytime i use slow motion in final cut pro in never comes out as clean as this.. any tips? i shoot using the canon t2i

  • How did you slow the footage down to 2%? When I was testing out some of my own video in FCP X I was stuck at predetermined intervals such as 50%, 25%, 10% etc. Thanks.

  • @mrjak1998 You can just drag the timing bar above the clip or use the inspector.

  • Was this filmed in Columbia, MD? I'm from there!

  • The link doesnt work...so go to my page please and watch the soccer movie at 1:13

  • Can anyone help me with the optical flow please.? I made this video in final cut X and during the optical flow there are black bars trembling on the sides.. Watch at 1:13..thanks guys

  • Notice anyone how the bee's wings are flapping at a fast rate still even in slow motion?

  • @F1NNAZ This is because the program "optical flow" uses an algorithm to analyze your clip frame by frame and build new synthetic frames with respect to the actual frames of real video. The bees wings beet faster than the camera's shutter speed is able to pick up, therefore, the program sees no change in the pixels generated in between frames, so it does not know what to do other than to make a blur to match what is already a blur in each single frame.

  • @Cineman2011 I know ahaaa :') It's more to do with the fact that I know that shows it's fake slow motion as you can see by the wings on the bees :)

  • I love this music!

  • I feel like i am in the movie Clockstoppers!

  • The bee part was great, really nice :)

  • For some reason I can't choose optical flow in the menu. The bar is grey and I can't click it. What happened? :(

  • music?

  • Wow the bumblebee was a great nature shot. Coupled with the music it reminded me of something I would've seen on a Discovery Channel commercial. I can picture the big D and then the rest of the title appearing right now

  • The footage wouldn't look that choppy if you had shot the footage with a higher shutter speed than 60fps. A higher shutter speed makes it easier for the software to generate frames inbetween.

  • @pcfreak1992 Shutter speed and FPS are not the same. 60fps is the max for the 60D (and every consumer camera I know), so I was stuck with that. I used a shutter speed of 1/125", but did experiment with speeds up to 1/1000". The software actually made a lot of "chop" with the high shutter rate (which makes sense since there was more time between frames). After some more testing after this video I think a shutter speed of about 1/400" is the sweet spot for smooth motion and good detail at 60fps.

  • @MattsMacintosh yes that's what I meant..

  • @MattsMacintosh yah you tell him! This video was awesome :D hehe

  • @MattsMacintosh:

Casio and other camera manufacturers have higher than 60fps on consumer cameras.

But it will be on lower resolutions.

My Casio EX-F1 can do 300fps at 512X384 pixels, 600fps at 432X192 pixels, and 1200 fps at 336X96 pixels.

The 300fps shots have OK quality, and the 600fps is also not too bad but the 1200fps is something I use just for fun sometimes.

Would be cool to test a 300fps shot with Optical Flow.

  • @MattsMacintosh I was going to guess that your camera gave you 1/125 shutter speed when you did 60i. It typically will double your frames per second as a rule of thumb. Thank your for saying 1/400 is "the sweet spot." I was actually going to ask. I don't shoot with a DSLR, but I do have a camcorder that gives you manual control over such things, and I wasn't sure what shutter speed to choose. Thank you, and have a blessed day!

  • @pcfreak1992 I didnt think it was choppy

  • Nice ,, Thanks !!

  • whats the original frame rate?

  • How ceap can I get a 60FPS camera for? (do I have to buy Canon 60D?)

  • Watching that bee fly away was kind of crazy.

  • You can do it in FCPX?

I was trying this in Motion 5.

How do you do it in FCPX?

  • @moviesunrated Just type Optical Flow in the help and it will show you where it is in the menu.

  • and FCP doesnt detect my sony video camera

  • can someone please help me !? i can't do thissss

  • @MattsMacintosh hey Matt, i tried to use this effect but i can't change it from normal to Optical Flow. Any ideas ?

  • Apple really outdid itself with Optical flow, I find it smoother than twixtor in some situations. But, because theres no customisable settings for it, (you just click optical flow) I think im gonna be sticking to twixtor. Nice Vid

  • @GregMcCahon Yep, completely agree with you. I think for quick stuff Optical Flow is great for just the "single click and done" setup, but if I was trying to do something more polished I'd probably stick with Twixtor as well.

  • @TheNicholasApple I do on my second channel.

  • heyy matt what camera ae re you using to film this, and also i was wondering what camera should i buy if i want to take studio pictures with? like a photo shoot? Thanks!

    Great video too!

  • hey matt i just would like to know, which video camera did you use to make this video, and btw i just bought a samsung hmx h200 and im really good at video editing and i love making videos for school projects, will my camera be good for doing green screen effects muzzle fire etc. thanks. And is it a good camera to use when doing major stuff and i always use colour corrections for the nice atmosphere, i use film magic pro for the colour corrections, i think u've heard of it :P ;). reply please :)

  • @Shahbaz7371 I put all my camera info in the description. For what you want to do I don't think the camera will matter as much as the post-production/editing part.

  • @MattsMacintosh ah ok thanks, one more thing alot of people are saying there is no difference between 720p HD and 1080p HD, is that true? Is there like a major difference between the video quality, thanks reply please :).

  • @Shahbaz7371 720P is not as sharp as 1080P. I would recommend primes if you shoot alot of 60P. Primes are much more sharper than lenses with zooms.

  • @MattsMacintosh Yeah but 60i is interlaced, which would cause more motion blur and will make slow motion worse.

  • not nearly as good as twixtor

  • @OfficialDJL 60i is actually 30p , it is always better to go with p(progressive) over i(interlaced) so to answer your question 60i and 30p will be the same

  • @stavyros thanks!

  • 1080i 60 or

    720p 60. Which is better?

  • @Kimburleh I would say 720p

  • @MattsMacintosh Cheers Man :)

  • have you tried out the twixtor plug in for after effetcs?

  • Fantastic video! Well done. Great music as well!

  • WOW, great!! Was this video filmed with a 60D?

  • @DanielHjorthPhoto Yep. All my camera info is in the description

  • Sweet video

  • How do you get so close to a bee!!? I can get a vid/ pic of one :( Do you zoom in a ton?

  • @salman6896 You have to find a flower where they are getting pollen from, then its easy.

  • I can't slow down 2% in Final Cut Pro X.

I only see 10, 25 and 50% as options. How did you do it?

  • @bchamorro Just slide the timing bar around that is on top of your clip.

  • I've lurked and watched pretty much all your vids and every video you make is exceptionally impressive and first class, not to mention informative and to the point.

  • @JuneNightingale Thanks! I really appreciate it.

  • nice!!

  • Nice effect

  • What camera did you shoot this with? its so awesome

  • Awesome!

  • Great video

  • So cool

  • twixtor?

  • Great Video Matt Can't Wait Two See The tutorial on this

  • That fountain is located in Columbia, MD right at the lake front!

How did you get down there to film that?

  • @meiklejohntheuesr Walked. There is a sidewalk that goes under it.

  • not enuf fps.

  • Awesome-ness!

  • Can you do a tutorial for something like After Effects or Vegas Pro for PC? (or at least tell us plugins to do that)

  • Awesome Job!

  • Very cool. You should make a tutorial

  • matt, that was awesome!

  • im not the one to give tips here im actually starting out... but i think if you would have shot in a higher shutter speed it would have looked a lot better like 1/1000 or 1/2000

    :]

  • Have you tried time remapping in After Effects? I was able to get some great footage with it.

  • @MattsMacintosh thanks! you're awesome!

  • That bee was slowed to 2% and you STILL couldn't see the wings flapping...Amazing!

  • INCEPTION

  • I have rlly bad apiphobia and I almost flipped out when i saw the bee scene...

  • is this an effect in fcp x or your camera effect?

  • @PatrickWillShowYou FCP X (although I did help it a little by shooting at a higher frame rate).

  • @MattsMacintosh thanks :)

  • thats well good that.. tutorial?

  • @O4MUFC Coming soon. I have to finish some other videos first.

  • @MattsMacintosh ok fair enough. keep them coming!

  • Beautiful

  • I wouldn't be surprised if i see some of this video on TV or in a movie

  • Wow nice wow nice wow nice video

  • Could you do a tutorial on this?

  • This is really cool!

  • what is the difference between 60i and 60p?

  • @OfficialDJL Progressive signals send the entire frame at once whereas the interlaced signal is sent in two intervals. The first half of an image is sent, then, the next half is sent in the next scan completing the single frame.

  • @MattsMacintosh srry but i really didnt understand that, haha:) well i know 60p can make things slower, so can 60i? Sorry, you probably think I'm dumb.

  • @OfficialDJL Of course I don't think you're dumb. You just haven't learned some things yet. So the "60" refers to the frame rate, so yes, both 60i and 60p can be slowed easily.

  • @MattsMacintosh okay, thanks so much, keep up your videos:)

  • tutorial .. plz ?

  • the thing is, you need a high FPS camera to actually get SLOOOOOOOWWWWW mo, that is smooth.

  • @goo6 But this is a passable alternative for those of us that can't afford $50,000 cameras.

  • @MattsMacintosh $50,000 of fun!

  • Can this be done with normal handy cam cameras?

  • @seongapple It definitely helps to shoot at higher frame rates (I did this at 60fps), but Optical Flow is designed to make any footage look better is slow mo, so you definitely can use your handycam.

  • i dont get it :/

  • Matt do you think i could do the slow motion thing in adobe premiere as well?

  • @TheTechMundo Of course. If you want to do crazy slow motion like this I recommend the Twixtor plugin.

  • try to increase your shutter speed in the water shots so you could see the water drops...

  • @caetanosmc I did some test with that and it didn't work so well. I got a lot of "chop" after the optical flow process. There is probably a sweet spot somewhere between the blur and the choppiness, so I'll keep experimenting.

  • Matt, Why do your videos have those black bars?

  • @TechJamieTech He puts them there to create a faux super-widescreen effect. It's just for the coolness, really. 8) The video is really 16:9 like the Youtube player.

  • Can you do slow mo for iMovie?

  • It looks good, Matt. Just wondering however, did you use an ND filter or a did you up the shutter speed?

  • I'd have to say, compared to Twixtor, this is a pretty good alternative.

  • @iSpinify Yeah, I purposely filmed more difficult subjects and I think it did just as well as Twixtor.

  • tutorial please :D

  • @Xeyad1 I'll be doing one for sure. I've got a couple more videos I need to finish first, though.

  • so soothing

  • cool!

  • have you used the plugin/program called twixtor? It allows smooth slow motion like the one you have here

  • @TheRayvid Yep, I have. That was one of the main reasons I was testing this out to see how they compared.

  • a high speed camera, plus this. EPIC

  • Nice!! Please make a video showing how to make that

    JJ

  • nice video XD

  • epic!

  • Great video Matt! Do you think we could do the interview this weekend?

  • Sweet
