we've got pre-paid computer chip cards called either SUICA or PASMO. once you put it and as much money as you want (from 1000 to 20,000yen) in the machine, all you need to do it to put it on the ticket gates. they'll automatically calculate and take the fee.
if you used up the amount, you can put it in machines and add money.
available at all most all lines in and around Tokyo.
lol,that reminds me when me and my family went to the U.S. for the first time,and we hardly knew any english,and we took the wrong train too.It took us hours to to get back to our hotel. =(
Yes, it is TERRIBLY Difficult to buy subway tickets. The ONLY way I could do it, was to look up my destination online, and get which trains I had to transfer to, what stations, how long it would take and how much it would cost. It took me a VERY long time to find a web site that could provide that information in ENGLISH. And even when you have that information, you could still take the wrong train, or end up on the wrong platform as easily as breathing.

AWWW! Sorry about that! You must have been in one of our
BIG cities. We only have local trains in our big cities. NY. LA. Chicago. Seattle. So even WE AMERICANS get lost in those places!!! Don't feel bad. :)
