That's a good book. I'll never complain about my job ever again! I really liked Bozo! He reminded me of Parry, Robin Williams' character in the film "The Fisher King". I'd love to meet him, but this was in the late 1920's so Bozo must have died years ago :-(
I just finished this book a couple of days ago. It was excellent. I personally would have cut a couple chapters that were basically just essays on consumerism, but the story itself was very compelling. Does anyone know if the narrator is actually supposed to be Orwell? I mean, it was in my library under "fiction" but the narrator is never given a name and it reads like a memoir. I'm sure it's a least partially based on personal experience, but I'm curious how closely.
@MckyMseNTarotCrds Thanks for your comment. My edition is listed as 'biography', but I had read that parts of Orwells story are apocryphil and fabricated upon, to add a more dramatic element. The village of 'Lower Binfield', in the novel for example, doesn't and never has existed, but is thought to be Walton-on-Thames, some miles to the West of London, and even back in the 1930's, I cannot imagine a gang of tramps in such a town as Walton -o -T.
it's ok, it took me a month to read it....i have been reading crime and punishment for 3 months now. ive red allot of books i guess, not as much as som because it takes me so long, it takes long for i dunno why. i might be dyslexic, maybe but i can read fine, just....tkes...so...long. this is a great book, i take it allllllllll in.
It took me 6 weeks to read War and Peace (i finished it a few days ago). Crime and Punishment is of the same ilk as War and Peace; inasmuchas it takes ages to read.
It doesnt matter how long it takes you to read a book. As long as you enjoy doing so is all that matters.
@tinofpop90 I'm a slow reader to because of minor mental issues brought on by drink and drugs, which cause me to lose focus pretty quickly these days; I'm training myself to read faster again though, like I did as a kid. I don't want to miss any of the many good reads in the world because of a slow mind, but I will still try and be realistic about how much I will be able to take in in my lifetime; as there are far too many for any of us to even comprehend individually... Short essay complete lol
Im sure you will enjoy it. I have read it again since posting this video. I also recommend 'Keep the Aspidistra flying', also by Orwell, as it is in a similar vein, although a novel. It has some quite funny parts in it too, but it is a long read.
I just finished Keep the Aspidistra flying. I thought that novel was great. I love the main character George. I'm sure hes Eric Blair's alter ego.
Do you feel that the Aspidistra was symbolic of the capitalistic working class lifestyle? I sure do. Do you think they purchased the aspidistra at the end of the novel? I believe they may have.
Oh this is so nice discussing literature with a human being!
I enjoyed the ending myself. I was somewhat disappointed that he stuck with his wife! A wife and kid can surely drag a man down, but his wife was a sweet woman.

Have you read any Dostoevsky, London, or Bukowski?
It is,good for a long train journey & helps avoid making eye to eye contact with people who always want to strike up a convo when you just want peace ;)

thank you for reading
i liked the Paris part so much better than the London part
even though the Paris part sorta had the
'and he jumped 7 feet high and was outta the hole" ending when he went home,y'know?

I just picked this novel up today! It will probably take me 5 days to finish it though! I'm a "slow" reader according to some.

Thats right! Gordon Comstock (the main character) was the alter ego for Eric Blair (Orwell).
The Aspidistra was symbolic of middle-class status - i suppose todays equivalent would be something like a plasma screen tv!lol!
I beleive they purchased one at the end too.
A lot of people feel that the end of that novel is bad, but i think its a happy ending, a rarity in the Orwell catalogue.

Thankyou! I have read Dostoevsky, although a long time ago.
I am actually getting back into classic literature and need to catch up somewhat.
