  • The CC is crap on this show lol

  • What crap is this?

It's an inhuman language in that the creator deliberately broke a number of rules that real languages tend to follow and selected features that are quite rare, so it wouldn't have evolved naturally. The guy who made it was a linguist.

Secondly, I know a fair bit about Klingon as I have an interest in languages (particularly fictional ones), but Star Trek bores the shit of me.

Also, the study was on language acquisition. Results? Kid didn't learn Klingon; that's STILL A RESULT.

  • kaman, that's OLSOME, its OLSOME

  • i hate the guy.

  • What? Unsubstantiated... Mainly based on Mongolian and Turkish? This guy is totally linguistically ignorant. Turkish is a very soft language, or at least it sounds fairly soft, first of all. Mongolian, not as harsh as he makes it seem, either. Totally unsubstantiated claim, that it's based on those languages. I can't find any sources that say that. And no one else speaks Klingon? There are more speakers of Klingon than there are speakers of Navajo... It's the most spoken fictional language...

  • no1 speaks klingon? lol! it's an official language, even wikipedia had/has articles in klingon :))

  • I don't know why people keep commenting on things they know little about (including the guys in the video). Apart from a few exceptions, no one here has said anything remotely coherent in terms of linguistic theory, not even the most basic concepts and ideas. Studies of this kind (and their unfeasibility for ethical reasons) are one of the holy grails of language acquisition and linguistics in general: to assess the acquisition processes of unattested and/or deemed impossible languages.

  • klingon does not sound turkish at all

  • What is most amazing with this story is that a guy that speeks Klingon managed to impregnate a woman. ;-)

  • Children gravitate towards the majority language they hear around them. It takes a conscious effort on the part of the parent to get the child to become an active native speaker of the minority language spoken in the family or just by one of the parents. The same goes for accents and dialects. Children don't necessarily speak like their parents. They will speak like their peers at school.

  • thats so super awesome :D im not a Star Trek fan but thats just awsome xD

  • I have one question: Usually, you can't remember the first 3 years of your life. So, this kid understands Klingon like it's completely naturally, but he can't remember of any human speaking Klingon to him? That must be awesome!

  • Cenk, you got a qIrq HoD nIvnav at home?! SRSLY? xD

  • Mongolian - bwahahahaa ^_^

    For once: qapHa', Cenk...

  • when my buttons are pushed enough, i have the anger of a klingon lol

  • And alot of Trekkers DO speak Klingon

  • @Austindude3954 Actually, there are extremely few who do; probably around thirty who can actually converse in it. Most just know Qapla' and petaQ (and most can't even spell'em).

  • All languages were made up -_-

  • And there are more of us that speak Klingon than you are aware of P'tak, Maj to the father

  • The young turks are d bags always ripping on everything, why not let people do what they want without critisism

  • Actually Cenk, the Klingon language was invented by non other than actor James Doohan for the movie Star Trek: The Motion Picture. To those who don't know, James Doohan played Scotty on Star Trek.

  • If he watches enough Star Trek, then he may just pick up Klingon from watching TV

  • Children don't learn language simply from someone "speaking" to you -- or from hearing the language spoken. Learning to speak is an interactive process. You make a variety of sounds, like 'mu" and "pu" -- in the direction of your care givers and they go nuts and react -- "Oh, yes, that's me, "Ma! "Pa! Da!, Ya, No! " whatever it is.

It's that interactive reinforcement that brings children to a particular language, so unless there are Klingon words for ma, pa, cup and binkie you're in trouble.

  • QALPA'

  • what does he mean that you cant pick it up because no one in his near space speak klingon?, I have learned Mandarin when learning only 3 hours a week, and noone in my near space speaks mandarin except my mandarin teacher, and yet I speak it. so picking up klingon would not be hard even if they just learns it 2 or 3 hours each day. as Jimmynewbrand says, "Techniclayyy, every language is a made up language. and yes even English is a made up language.

  • the dad has no life

  • I`m only waiting for the first Dude to teach his kid elvish.

  • @ReezeGoingSenseless you can't really do that...elvish isn't complete enough to use as a daily language

  • I loled at "fork spoon and knife" because it did sound harsh.... and it was just kitchen ware...... LOLOLOLOL

  • i find this dude's behaviour a little trollish..i'm quite sure he's a little smarter than he looks but he keeps trollin everytime...

  • MOST STUPID RETARDED CHANNEL ON YOUTUBE. Retarded people, please don't get offended for being compared with this mentally challenged.

  • I wanna speak klingon !

  • hlja! chA bacH! Kapla`! pIv! Qu` Qel.

  • @0637085966

There are colleges where you can learn Klingon and LotR Elvish. :)

  • It's funny how many of the comments are from angry and confused people.

  • Who the fuck are you retards.!

  • Live long and prosper Indeed

  • Great that you are teaching an edjucated linguist how to do his job. He wouldn't happen to know more about klingon and other languages than two hobby journalists... douchebags...

  • @9Robin1 He could have thought his kids Esperanto if he wanted to study artificial language acquisition.

  • @Kathara14 that's already happend and it worked perfectly.. Esperanto is probably the easiest language in the world, while Klingon is much more complex and has grammatical categories for things no other human language has, which makes it far more interesting

  • @Planckstein Oo, I seriously doubt it. The complexity of some languages blows one's mind.

  • naDevvo' yIghoS

  • I lol'd at fork, spoon and knife.

  • Go ***** Your Self You Fat Targ Everyone Speaks Klingon! Make My ANGRY!!!!!

    RAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH

  • man this guys a douche bag about everything!

  • tlhIngan Hol vIjatlhlaH

  • what is this guy talking about "no one speaks klingon" I speak klingon, am i no one?

  • @MedicusQui1161

I think he means more in the sense that no one possibly in his family other than his dad would speak to him like that and everyone else of course in english.... I suppose.

  • @MedicusQui1161 You have earned my respect sir

  • How Young are theese Turks?

  • This is insanely boring

  • here is video about how Marc Okrand came up with the klingon language

    watch?v=Ph77eTMZIhs

  • that is why star wars has 7 academy awwards 7 oscars !!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • wtf

  • THIS IS RETARDED

  • Everyone language is made up...but it seems to work...so what ever.

  • i think that if the wife had spoken klingon also he would have picked it up. children brought up in america still learn their ancestral language (ex: chinese, korean, etc.) because their entire family uses it at home, but they also learn english because of their exposure to it from television and friends. in fact, my friends little sister only spoke chinese until she was about 3, so that was a huge pain for me who speaks such little chinese its pathetic... of course, i'm not chinese either

  • I googled klingon and bursted into a fit of laughter

  • ill teach my kid klingon.... thats wat my hubby and i speak at home anyway so y not??

  • The real problem is that his son wasn't Klingon.

  • Years ago I saw in a bookstore , an English Klingon translater dictionary.

  • i wish my dad did that to me :\

  • People only take the piss out of Star Trek because it's the most popular TV show ever.

  • sounds awesome!!! :D

  • he said thats pawsome thats pawsome LOL

  • star trek?!

  • Calm down I have relatives who are Texans and we gave each other grief and black eyes in are younger days. So if you are wishing you could give me a punch in the nose for my little joke it's happened a few times....... over far worse comments than that.... So for my relatives who live in the lone star state GOD BLESS TEXAS..... The rest of you can kiss my ass!!!

  • That's fucking wonderful. I want to grow up learning Klingon.

  • It's stupid that he did it to see if he would pick up a 'non-human' language... Stupid guy.

I don't think you can really teach a child Klingon because it's an incomplete language. You can't say a lot of things that would apply to talking to a three year old.

I think Klingon is cool because when else can you participate in the 'creation' of a language? Keep at it sons and daughters of Kahless.

  • all language's are made up

  • That's fucking sweet. Haha!

  • 3:46 long ??

Just to say no more than the title itself ??

    Loss of time.

  • oh she likes those little comments about her boobs huh, cuz I see you wear some very decent dress :D

  • NUQ DAQ YUJ DA'POL

  • QUPLAH!!!!

  • i wanna learn to speak klingon

  • thats cool ass all hell to me. that kid is going to pick up faster then the kids watching Dora. if for some reason i meet the dad, he gets free beer for not letting his kid waste his brain.

  • this shit is funny

    Pachak shatal?

  • na'vi rules !!! go for it .. be the bond !!

  • FUCK THE KLINGON'S! NA'VI FTW!

  • KAPLA.

  • i think they r kinda funy

  • silentsback,

I think that a good number of the regular TYT audience watch it just to look at Anna's chest.

  • Hab SoSlI' Quch!

  • What a dumbass father. Children learn languages by relating them to images. Not just by shouting words at them.

    He was just a dork.

  • Whatever anna. Computers are cool now, give it 5 years and geek will be top sheek while your begging to slob my knob

    WE ARE STILL HERE!!!

  • Hey you would make a nice klingon!

    Kaplah

  • Comment removed

  • obvi its "live long and prosper" fuckers lucky i dont kick his ass not knowing that shit. Star Trek FTW!!!

  • Technically, every language is a made up language

  • @jimmynewbrand You have to be more specific than just saying "made up". Some languages have evolved over the years, maybe millennia, while other languages have been constructed or "made up" like e.g. Esperanto. Saying that all languages are "made up" is not precise enough to describe languages, unless you are talking about languages invented by children.

  • @jimmynewbrand

    Not really ;-)

  • @jimmynewbrand Yeah, but natural differences are pretty hard to swallow. lol

  • @jimmynewbrand well he says its a language derived from aliens, klingon is made up by humans (unless they are assimilated to the borg collective)

  • @jimmynewbrand But no one sat down and said "I don't want to be just a Saxon anymore... what should we call this new language... I am now speaking in English"

  • Beam me up Scotty!

  • I had a friend in college that spoke Klingon.

  • poor boy going and speak klingon and get his ass whoop

  • fucking sick shit

  • cap kirk awayyyy

owch damn it spock your ears hit my eye

  • never mind

  • um can any one explain wtf is klingon

  • Klingon is a language spoken by a race of people from outer space that are featured in Star Trek.

  • There's a good reason the kid chosed to speak English over Klingon.

English as a language has evolved over millennia. This evolution occurred due to the preferences of the people speaking it, choosing certain words over others as well as how they are pronounced according to how good it sounds.

This evolution makes English a very pleasing language to both speak and listen to.

Compare that to the harsh, unevolved Klingon language and it is no wonder that English won in the end.

  • English is a made up language from many other languages with a strong foundation in Latin and Greek... I believe. The word sounds are not as important as the context with which they are spoken. Common prefixes and suffixes give added flexibility to the language in order to make up new words with meaning. Also I think the ability to pronounce certain word parts at a young age contributes to the overall usage of the language.

Mark Orkand made up the language and he is a linguist... I think.

    :P

  • all languages are made up btw :P

  • no they aren't. they've developed. people didn't come together to decide on how they should talk.

  • latin, french, greek, and spanish, to be exact

  • I love that your name incorporates the 13th letter of the Greek alphabet :)

I thought French and Spanish had their roots in Roman?

I just googled romantic languages and they have their roots in Latin which was the language of Rome... I didn't know that.

    :P

  • Disagree.

  • what a waster of time.......

Why didn't he teach him French or Spanish or something useful

  • If his mother spoke Klingon he would speak Klingon. People learn their mother's tongue.

  • srpski sounds like a harsh lanuage

    cao cao ja volim korov

  • I think Cenk would fit in the Riker outfit better.

  • want to here a nonhuman language spend a week in texas.

  • @bigcomcast maybe in some areas, but texas has plenty of people that speak regular english. the real concentration of hick-speak is in the deep south ... like mississippi, alabama, tennessee, etc. trust me -- i'm from texas and i've visited the deep south. it's true.

  • @bigcomcast Uh ya'll best learn how to spell HEAR 'fore you make fun o texans son! Hell, wetbacks write better than you!

  • @bigcomcast oh fuck you you should probably learn how to spell before you start hating on others language. not everyone in texas has a hick accent.

  • @bigcomcast FUCK YOU

  • @bigcomcast i meant to "plus" that

  • @bigcomcast Fuck YOU !!! Texas RULES !! stupid yankee....

  • @USAamericaUSA I am an injun pole smoker I do not think YANKEE'S claim me cocksucker.

  • @USAamericaUSA lol fuck you ... the guy has 25 thumbs up for a reason ... because lots of people know down south people dont speak english. they speak a more fucked up version of what used to be english.

  • @CTRTrichome right, the folks in Baaston and Neew Yaak really know how to speak "English'. While American call their language 'English' it is really 'American' ask anyone from Britain. Before you slam the south take a trip to Wisconsin or California. SOUTHERN WOMAN AND PROUD OF IT!!!!!

  • @USAamericaUSA hahahaha id love to hear you say that in non human texasian

  • Cenk needs to let Anna talk more.

  • "Live long an Prosper" ... You're DONE Cenk. lol.

  • yes, so you better wear the star trek outfit next time! you REALLY screwed up!

  • Uniform not costume lol

  • Go the whole hog, fill him full of steroids , stick a Danish on his forehead, grow his hair and get him a WWE deal.

  • Klingon, like Elvish, is made up by humans. English, Turkish, Spanish, and Arameic was made up by humans too. Just like Xhoisan (long dead African tribal language). For a kid to pick up a "non-human language" he would have to live with ANIMALS. Man, this linguist has probably lost all credibility with the academic community.

  • it's the craziest study of all time . OF ALL TIME!

  • even Esperantu would have made more sense than Klingon. But that experiment has already been done. Supposedly successfully.

  • Yes, there are plenty of native Esperanto speakers, including George Soros if you can believe that.

  • how dare you not like these vids. can't you see from all the thumbs down that you should like them? LIKE THEM.

  • Well Young Turks, it is a more interesting study than you might think. There's a common theory that there is an universal grammar, which is somehow genetically ingrained in our brains, which makes us able to learn (any) human language. Assuming that Klingon is not a human language, the child might not pickup on it. I doubt that they put so much thought in constructing Klingon that it's the same as an organically evolved language.

  • In other words, what you're stating is that Klingon is like a first generation Pidgin language - it has basic words needed for communication in specific contexts (marketplace, The Enterprise) but not enough of a solid, consistent grammatical structure or wide as a vocabulary as a fully developped language, no? But almost every kid in west Africa knows some variation of English lexifier pidgin, so why not Klingon (which IS a human language)?

  • You remind me of a kid I knew in college who would always reiterate everything that someone said for the sole purpose of letting everyone know he had both a better vocabulary and a better understanding of the subject at hand.

  • Except my "reiteration" of Juhmo was made to counter the implied argument (from all his posts put together) he was making, which stems from the assumption that UG is correct (it doesn't apply always) and that Klingon is not a human language (it is), not to re-state what he explicitly said. Also, I'm sure that I do have a better understanding on language acquisition and linguistics than most people on youtube, with the exception (perhaps) of those with doctoral credits or above in either topic.

  • Implied arguments reside mostly in the minds of those who perceive them.

You may not know the level of education of those around you unless they are clever enough to prefix their usernames with their titles.

The guy I knew in college was also very smart and learned.

  • Its super fucking sweet tough.. :D

  • @MechaRadio That's a rather stupid comment.

  • Hey, if you can't perform social experiments on your kids, what's the point in having them?

Actually, I don't think it's abuse. It would be abuse if the kid was exclusively taught Klingon without English. But speaking Klingon to a baby isn't really abusive.

  • I agree, this is no more child abuse than raising your children bilingual. But since Klingon probably doesn't fit the universal grammar, children wouldn't pick up on it. Putting sounds from different human languages together doesn't make a human language per se, that's the point this guy was trying to prove. And it has no negative effect on your child, because it will still learn it's mother tongue, since the mother and other people spoke that to the child. I think this is an awesome experiment.

  • Except that ethical laws on research state that one can't do experiments on their own kids. It sucks, I know, but that's research ethics.

  • I C WAT U DID THAR CENK!! Nice pun, guy! :D

  • Actually the language is nonhuman in a sense. It's not intended that humans speak it, but that these 'Aliens' speak it. I basically came to that conclusion after reading it in my dictionary and looking it up online.

"3. not intended for consumption by humans: nonhuman products such as soaps and detergents. " :3

    But still very interesting.

  • in fantasy land its spoken by aliens. But the bottom line its humans dressed as aliens. :p

  • Lol yes, but the point is that this language was made for 'aliens'. Not humans. I think that is what confused them. This language is nonhuman, because according to Star Trek, it is spoken by aliens. This language is made up. We do not apply our logic to something that is intended to break the rules of our logic. It's like star wars. We do not look at the movie and go, "That is just a guy dressed in a jedi costume". We believe him to be a Jedi, or else the whole story falls apart.

  • Please Cenk!

  • Cenk, could you wear the Captain Kirk outfit? Just for once? Please?

  • I'm going to teach my kids Elvish then.

  • Weak sauce, I love that!

  • Haha, I love the irony in your name.

    Oh, you're retarded.

  • Ana's so young and a bit clueless at times, who wouldn't get the pun Cenk made at the beggining.

  • I'm gonna learn my daughter Chinese.

  • you learn her good.

  • @SmartestManAaive your a peice of shit, racist fuck. stay off youtube and hell do us a favor and walk onto a busy highway.

  • @lastwill11 he basically uses youtube soely to say things like that. click on that link of his name. its amazing.

  • Ana is HOT!

  • While its true that Klingon was made up by people it is an in-human language, while Klingon is a mix of distinctive sounds and sometimes words from languages like Turkish and Mongolian the majority of the language is combined in a way that doesn't make sense to the human ear which may explain why his son did not pick it up. People who know and learn Klingon say that learning the language is almost entirely memorization and to speak it takes extreme focus on memorized lessons.

  • The benefit, his son will never have to work hard to pick up ladies;-)

  • This is why TYT should stay out of politics.

  • There are no surprises in this world.

  • Wasn't there something like this in Daddy Daycare?

  • Shoulda taught him Elvish instead...

  • LOL! 8^)

  • I wonder what a Klingon accent would sound like...

  • i wish my dad would speak to me in klingon. all he does is drink -_-

  • haha, win

  • Why not?

    Worf is badass!!

  • "You have no honor."

  • .. don't laugh .. the kid will probably become an engineer, and will pay his way through engineering school doing the Renaissance Fest every weekend at Midieval Days in Kissimmee. ..

  • its nice that he's a father who at least cares about his son, but learning a real language would have been way more useful.
