very nice all around, 765 came to Wester NY in the early 80's, and the crew let me shovel coal, grease the drivers with some monster pneumatic Alemite gun. They let me crawl all over / under it while it was building steam for an excursion the next day. Great bunch of fellows. I think they told me the they threw an old mattress soaked in #2 in the firebox w/ palletts to get it started. Can you veryify that something like that was possible? It was about 29 years ago I heard the story.
On runbys that I have participated on I used to would get the train moving then make a small brake application to hold the train back. Then Open the throttle wide to get some good stack talk. Then use the brakes to hold speed in check. Even if you can't do more than 10mph. you can make a runby one heck of a show.
I'm an old retired ATSF Engineer (1950-1974). I saw the other video, my old eyes see an old 2-8-4 Berkshire Steamer. I've throttle jerked a few Baldwin Steamers in the early 1950s. Get your Fireman a Banjo Shovel, they get in and out of the firebox better. A lot of interesting controls I remember, but not the EMD brake control. Tell the Guys a great job on the ole girl. Great video :-)
I learned yesterday though the 765 has a 20 foot firebox I did not think it was that big but its quite sizable and the superheater can get up to 3000 degrees very hot.
@GoldenCreekValleyRR You mean its like touching a hot burner. A friend of mine told me that if you was to be burnt by the steam coming out of any exhaust, you'd lose your skin.
@deloreanman14 when on the road we use a stoker, but sometimes we have to shovel coal into the corners. When we are hostling or standing still we shovel the coal by hand. Lots of work, but sure is worth the effort!
This is very cool, however, that run by was WEAK!!! Let the ITM engineers show ya how it's done! We miss "Ernie" and "Russ", the engineers of the NKP 587. Great video!
@IndianaPentecostal23 Unlike ITM, we are bound by the rules (and speed limits) setup by the freight operator and the FRA. We can only do what the track speeds and space allow.
@IndianaPentecostal23 theres also the fact that you have to make the trip last long enough so people have a chance to enjoy both the scenery and the locomotive.
No, I was the pilot engineer. As for being in the know, I am president of Hoosier Valley Museum, so I have inside info that most don't have. Right now, no decision has been made, but we have lots of time before the operating season starts.
@HoosierValley Oh. I have heard about your museum and tourist railroad only once before. I am not familiar with the line and wasnt sure if you owned it. The tracks look to be in great shape. I hope we do head up your way because for a first timer, it will be much more managable for me.

touching that metal is like touching a hot boiler. I burned myself once by doing that. Firebox = cool = DONT TOUCH!

@GoldenCreekValleyRR by touching that metal, you are touching a boiler. lol

What was up with the whistle towards the end? He yells something at the fireman but I couldnt quite make it out.
Trainlover12345 1 year ago
@Trainlover12345 The fireman filled the boiler full of water. Water then carried over through the whistle.

Its kind of funny how some of the locals were sitting on lawn chairs watching 765 go by like she was a fireworks display. lol

I've heard Ft Wayne wants to bring her back in May. I hope to have Grasselli ready by that time. Got 1 signal controlled by a lever as of 1 week ago.
